His real name is William Bevan, but we all know that because he’s an attention-hogging, spotlight-stealing media darling who participates in various social activities and spends a significant amount of time entertaining and being entertained at fashionable upper-class events.

Barry Andrewsin Disko
So, ye faithful readers of TMT, can you find Rovaniemi and Turku on a map? Well, Barry Andrewsin Disko (the nom de rock of a Mr. Jukka Herva) probably doesn’t know where you live either. Hailing from those Finnish cities, so far he’s released two cassettes and is preparing his first album for release this year on Fonal Records.
And there’s at least two pieces of indisputable evidence in B.A.D.’s favor:
(1) He goes by Mr. Disko.
(2) Rovaniemi, Lapland, Disko’s hometown, is also the official hometown of Santa Claus. Which makes sense if you’ve already listened to “Lampatia,” the track streaming below. While not exactly “Disko,” it does sound like the sort of sad, lilting tune Santa might actually listen to. Consider the big man’s hundreds of years of life, the extent of his travels, his necessary power for empathy. Consider his calloused hands, his unreal craftsmanship, the millions of poverty stricken, distraught abodes he enters year after year. Consider the fortitude required to do it again and again with such single-minded strength and the melancholy wisdom that must be his to keep going on and on and on. I think Disko’s eldritch beauty is right on target. This is the music made when all your life, through good and bad, is spent on Christmas. Happy February!

As my cousin Rob used to always say, “It makes me want to kill myself that there’s just not enough tunes fusing Radiophonic-era electronics, musique concrète, early European folk music, and 1920s film scores.” That’s where Gultskra Artikler and his latest release, Abtu/Anet, come in. The album, set for release next week on Miasmah, is somewhat of a ‘reissue,’ as it consists of music from a limited 3-inch CD-R from 2007 and an unreleased companion EP from that time. You remember Lockett from Deerhunter, right? He has a solo project called Lotus Plaza, and “Come Back” is a nine-minute dream pop song off his new collab/split 10-inch with Nice Weekend (his fiancé), set for release on Valentine’s Day via Audraglint Recordings. This glistening track has all the depth of a solo home-studio recording, layer upon layer of reverberating instruments — hours of overdubs — but without the isolation of a lonely musician up all night recording. This feels like a more euphoric exercise. Discs come in old-school tip-on record sleeves. Should serve as a primer for a new Lotus Plaza full-length on Kranky due later this year.
“I Am The Queen”
Errybody’s footworking now: white people, Derrick Rose look-alikes, tennis players, babies. Even you. And the women? While some are hip rolling and others are bobbing, there are plenty of female footworkers who are killing it in circles. Jlin, who runs with DJ Roc’s Bosses Of The Circle clique, is the only female footwork producer I know. You’ve probably heard “Asylum” and “Erotic Heat” from the second Planet Mu footwork comp, and you might have also heard her breakout track “808,” but you should probably hear more. Her latest track is “I Am The Queen,” a song she’s dedicated to the “lady footworkers.” I feel like I should make a Lady Foot Locker joke here. Anyway, check it:
