♫♪  Ki Oni - “mandopop”

A little late on this one, I know, but I just dove deep into this Ki Oni album, and I couldn’t help myself from sharing. Elephas is too damn chill for its own good, but I think that chillness turned me off a bit when I first heard this one. I think I can be forgiven for reading something on the tape’s Bandcamp about elephants, hearing these low-key ambient, green-room tunes, and thinking, “Passssss.” After a couple other solid releases from Inner Islands, plus a well-timed review from my “URL bro” Diego over at Decoder, I was hangin’ in the lab thinking I should give this one another try. Oh, how sweet were the rewards, dear listeners! This is music for the adventurous, late-night, faded dance floor, when the true heads/weirdos are still down to party. Conversely, this is also an album of wide-eyed wonder, one that can soundtrack your morning run, coffee sesh, or a walk through a cold, foggy forest.

My point? Ki Oni made something really great here, and it’s possible that, if you’re like me, it may not have grabbed you when it was originally released. Luckily for you, there’s an infinite number of downloads available, as well as eight cassettes remaining, so get on it. Trust your uncle JasonC, it’ll be worth it. ;)
