R/S (Rehberg / Schmickler)
R/S is Peter Rehberg, founder of the Editions Mego label, and Marcus Schmickler, mastermind behind the Pluramon project. They have a new LP out on PAN which documents several improvised live outings from 2009. These sounds could be classified under harsh noise, but I don’t want to sound like a little prick by making that claim outright, so I’ll just say that the level of interplay and variation here is far beyond what most noise-makers get away with these days. Zs, still coming off their high from topping our 2010 year-end list (just kidding, we suck), have just signed a multi-release deal with Brooklyn-based label Northern-Spy. Expect some box sets and solo releases in the coming months, but for now, the label has confirmed the release of a double 7-inch entitled “33.” It’s out November 8. Check out one of its tracks, “33~,” streaming above.
My cat’s going nuts right now. Just thought you’d like to know. Just kidding. It’s because I’m listening to this album preview of Ryoji Ikeda’s +/-, which is seeing reissue on the Touch label. The album ends with a piercing high frequency tone that slowly drifts out of the human range of hearing. Well, that’s bullshit, I want to hear the entire album! On headphones or bigger speakers most of Ikeda’s work takes on a strange physical quality, with a vast range of frequencies inhabiting interwoven electronic rhythms. Obviously there are other people out there who like losing their hearing, because this is the fourth reissue of +/-, placing Ikeda one reissue behind Pink Floyd as most reissued artist of all time.
No Quarter records has announced that the too-long out of print compilation The Life & Times of Laddio Bolocko is officially re-issued. Listen to the sample below to understand why the group is already reaching that coveted canonized critical status. They really were heirs to the industrial wasteland rock vibe pioneered by those crazy Germans in the late 60s and 70s who wanted nothing more than to erase a saturated, bloated musical past and start anew.
Take a look at this promo video from Sigur Rós, apparently supporting a new live album/DVD. Hey, maybe tinymixtapes will get a few extra hits from posting this thing without knowing what the fuck it is/what we’re talking about! In related, more concrete news, Icelandic composer Daníel Bjarnason is set to arrange a new Sigur Rós album. Which means he’ll probably write some overlaying orchestral parts. Or maybe he’ll just write the whole record. Here’s a track from Bjarnason’s fantastic 2010 album Processions, and here’s to hoping that Sigur Rós will learn how to use dissonance for two seconds:
Kommissar Hjuler Und Frau
“Jacob und Wilhelm Grimm”
According to artiste Kommissar Hjuler, who performs with his wife as Kommissar Hjuler Und Frau, they have made the “greatest album of the century” in Jacob und Wilheim Grimm. Check the sample to hear for yourself. It certainly does make most music we call “experimental” these days seem a bit rote, as if musicians picked up a basic set of ‘avant-garde’ rules somewhere along the way and we never really let go. Of course, Kommissar’s music has been labeled Neo-Dada, so what do I know? Feeding Tube Records claims that Jacob und Wilheim Grimm is a “hearty mix of sound poetry, musique concrète, absurdist performance and pornography” and that it’s “not always an easy sell. Add to that the group’s discography, which is approaching the 300 count, and it can become difficult to separate the wheat from the chaff.” In the spirit of dadaism I’m going to call Feeding Tube out for setting any sort of Wheat vs Chaff precedent. The wheat and the chaff are one, man.
