♫♪  Champagne Mirrors - “Earless”

synth lord awaiting a bus

The champagne mirror is the key to solving the secret of the art deco necromancer Alex Barnett, the boss at the end of the haunted house level of Dance, Dance, Exorcise Demons. The mirror reflects back his true state: disfigured, and possessing three flaming tongues that clench into four fingered tongue-fists. Known to be the most accurate human arpeggiator plugin this side of the galaxy.

If you feel the mirror begin to rotate, do not be alarmed; get yourself into a sticky groove and don’t be afraid to lower your hips a little. That’s something I’ve come to appreciate from the heavier side of experimental music – between the blackened rumble of Oakeater and the more enigmatic, emotional energy of Barnett + Coloccia, it makes sense that the multi-instrumentalist needs an outlet that’s 100% pumping techno, as the scots say. When I gaze into the mirror, I see myself in a club drenched in the regular assortment of bodily fluids, plus a few surprises. It’s funny how music that is ostensibly digital can inspire such medieval urges.

The furious production on “Skinless,” the first full track available off of Champagne Mirror’s debut cassette, has a quieter beginning. Barnett experimented with synth ephemera on a series of 2010 tapes numbered Section’s 1-4. One which must have extremely muscular fingers, given the velocity of “Skinless.” It’s a powerful, ham-fisted statement made to establish the foundation for Scrapes, Barnett’s record label. Champagne Mirrors is also work composed live, with Barnett delivering the dungeon-master vocals over a spartan set up of drum machine and synth. Extended Communication Techniques can be acquired now from Scrapes. Barnett can be seen crossing the US with golden battle-ax in one hand, Shure in the other.
