♫♪  Curtiss King - “Venice Beach” (feat. Oh Gosh Leotus)

There are many kings out there, from King Kunta and King James to B.B. King and Burger King, but self-taught beatsmith and rapper Curtiss King has quietly distinguished himself from the pack over the years. Inland Empire-based hustler’s tireless work ethic, something evidenced by a slew of ’90s-tinged mixtapes, earned him a personal invite from Murs to play the 2012 Paid Dues Festival, while his reputation expanded thanks to timely collaborations with the likes of Kendrick Lamar, E-40, Loud Pvck, and Ab-Soul. It’s been a long road to get to where he is, but his latest project is bound to be an awakening for a lot of people.

It’s a concept album called Creatine, due out on February 12, 2016 care of Alpha Pup Records. Musically, the album reportedly leans on a mix of Cali hip-hop funk and old school dance music shaped by contemporary production techniques, all underscoring a theme based on the ’80s fitness lifestyle, complete with a Richard Simmons sample. Check out a taste of the album below, an exercise of breezy synth work and light jazz keys over a chill beat that, like its title suggests, is an ode to Venice Beach, thanks to snippets from the Jane Fonda’s classic workout video. It’s clearly for people who take having fun seriously.
