The Waves keep getting Colder and Colder; even dip your toe into the sonic morass of HOT GUTS’ “Fires” and, despite the initial white-hot burn, you’ll eventually watch your appendages freeze and fall by the wayside until only your ears remain. Continue to stuff them until the ambulance arrives and you might just cling to that sad little life of yours, but-hey, maybe not?
The key is to use the tools of today to recreate the sounds of yesteryear, specifically specific strains of The Cure and certain darkwave acts, but there’s more to “Fires” than that. A lingering unease permeates the arrangement, setting it apart from much of the reissue madness you’ll find on labels like Dark Entries and Wierd, and a soft layer of frost distances you from the artist. It’s like trying to break through the emotional barriers of a step-parent, albeit perhaps a bit more alienating (depending on your family situation; don’t cry!) and confounding, yet you’ll continue to attempt to clarify its feelings against all logic. It all culminates in the Wilds LP, out November 10 on AVANT!, so if you got a lick and are hankerin’ for more, follow this fiery lil’ breadcrumb to its logical conclusion.
