Laying a thick foundation of sample-warping to begin, James West (DJ Midi Mayne) brushes up with expanding strokes and paced timing in his newest track “Wet Paint” off new Bootleg Tapes release Busy Night Time 1997 (out next Friday, January 29). With colorful blushes of rhythm, the song is side-tracked into a star-lit gazed visions that access a zone past the club he’s painting within. Waking up, “Wet Paint” comes back in when James awakens to a bumping party within the warehouse he was brushing, and all the patrons are glowing in white under the black light. Hand prints scatter the walls, and as the drum reversal directs him to continue the party, he relentlessly keeps the beat alive with cuts and edits softly controlled in a grit of keys that clicker in and out, like the light that continues to silhouette the crowd.
James West hasn’t had a release like this since his Dreams West release years ago. And Busy Night Time 1997 is an entirely different animal. So many twists and turns that dip a dancer’s consciousness, free-thought immediately hits listeners, and takes them under control until the last note.
