♫♪  Stefano Pilia - Blind Sun New Century Christology

Stefano Pilia’s Blind Sun New Century Christology, a co-production of Sound of Cobra and Tannen, is a sacred guitar-scape, a latenight ritual and/or animal sacrifice performed in silence in the light of the moon. And despite all its convincing arguments for experimental detours, after the head-turning “Ada” flashes a few noise notations to come, “Dark Was the Night Cold Was the Ground” jump-kicks straight into Pilia’s bread/butter, which is sub-blues soul-scraping comparable to Neil Young’s turn on the Dead Man soundtrack, lonely but not in need of a lift. Not at all.

Cuts like “What are They Doing in Heaven Today” levitate on the strength of Pilia’s pure playing, while “The Cross Peregrine Falcon N.C.+” flips the script and rifles through a few more noise tropes before segueing into raw, wriggling guitar magic as more static cascades overtop. I’ve been jumping around the tracklist a little bit but that’s pretty much the listening experience of Blind Sun New Century Christology no matter how you approach it. Feelings might be hurt, lines might be crossed, and the only way to weave up those wounds is to sew a salient, gentle song, which Pilia accomplishes via both the naked, shivering “Little ADA” and desert-wandering “Blind Moon.” Keep your loved ones close, and this LP closer.
