♫♪  Throws - “Punch Drunk Sober”

Oh sure, now that summer is on the way, “British pop with Icelandic flair” is pretty much all anyone down here at the Country Club talks about! But a month or so back, who was it that first tipped you off to Mike Lindsay and Sam Genders’ (of “folktronica” megaband Tuung) killer side-project Throws and its debut single “The Harbor” back on the 17th hole putting green? Yeah. Fuckin’ your old pal TMT, that’s who.

But… sigh, seeing as how we were both pretty well smashed on strawberry daiquiris at the time, I’ll remind you again that Throws is releasing their Icelandic-ally recorded self-titled album on Thrill Jockey (Full Time Hobby in the UK) on June 10. And hell, I’ll do ya one better by tipping you off to the new video that the band is premiering today!

It’s for the album track “Punch Drunk Sober,” and it was directed by up-and-coming Chicago director Joe Martinez (Oozing Wound, the Body, Tortoise). Shot primarily “on the breathtaking salt lakes of Utah,” the clip “is about seeing through the eyes of someone whose relationship is falling apart and the good times from the past that keep running through their head,” according to Lindsay and Genders. “It’s a good reflection of that head space the song deals with - feeling like a relationship isn’t working yet not really knowing if that feeling is the truth or just the result of frustration. The song comes from a more animated, even darker place, delving deep into that state of confusion that is a maelstrom of anger, determination, passion, love, hate, joy, fear and tenderness.”

Um, whoa, sorry. This subject matter isn’t too heavy for the steamy sauna we’re getting high in together right now, is it? Maybe I’ll just have my assistant email the video to your Blackberry so you can watch it later. Watch it at your leisure, and we can just talk about it at the luau this weekend.
