♫♪  Hawk Martha - “SUNLANDIC YING TANG TWINS”

This Choco post comes from TMT’s very own Jake Marcks (a.k.a. Hawk Martha), a multimedia project ranging from comedy to art film to “SUNLANDIC YING YANG TWINS” which slyly mashes tracks from of Montreal’s 2004 album Sunlandic Twins with Ying Yang Twins’ vocals. The result could have just been a gimmick, but the mash-up shows how the ethereal sounds of Sunlandic Twins still seem current when they’re paired with a very rhythmic vocal.

By pushing Kevin Barnes’ voice to PC Music-level speeds that match Ying Yang Twins’, Hawk Martha recontextualizes of Montreal’s forward-thinking take on pop music for a 2015 audience. It doesn’t seem as if Kevin Barnes is really interested in computer electronics right now, so perhaps this is the music Barnes is making in some parallel universe. And though Hawk Martha commands Barnes’ voice to be the subject for much of the minimix, the parts where the Ying Yang Twins’ flow is the subject and of Montreal’s sadder background vocals or instrumentals complement are where “SUNLANDIC YING YANG TWINS” reaches an intense emotionality, something that was unexpected on first listen.
