Having just released an EP, Oh, on June 15, Markus Popp, a.k.a. Oval, is getting ready to release his double-album return, O, in September. In the meantime, here’s a video for “Kastell” off the Oh EP. According to Thrill Jockey’s cute-ass publicist:

The brief length of the song is characteristic of the second disc worth of songs on the forthcoming “O” double CD/LP set for release on September 7th. Disc 2 features no less than 50 concise, highly detailed pieces that are a conscious nod to the culture of instant gratification. Attentions spans are noticeably changed and the culture of organic discovery is gone from the mainstream and replaced by a hunger for the new. Consumption and criticism at warp speed. Portability dominates the art form to an extent never before seen. These tracks represent Popp’s personal challenge to create pieces within a constrained framework that addresses this aspect of music culture. Popp has even referred to these pieces as ringtones.

Kathryn Calder

We’ve already told you about Are You My Mother?, the forthcoming album by Kathryn Calder of The New Pornographers, and we’ve even posted her first single in the Chocolate Grinder. But now she’s released her second single, which means I’m able to use this cute, to-be-looked-at-because-she-is-a-female press picture again.

“Wendell Gee”

What’s better than R.E.M.’s 1985 album, Fables of the Reconstruction? The 25th anniversary, super-duper deluxe reissue of R.E.M.’s 1985 album, Fables of the Reconstruction! Due July 13 via Capitol/I.R.S., the remastered album has been expanded with 14 previously unreleased demos and liner notes by Peter Buck (always loved his name). It’s available either digitally, on two CDs, or on 180g vinyl.

Writes Buck: “It’s a personal favorite, and I’m really proud of how strange it is. Nobody but R.E.M. could have made that record. It took our four twisted personalities and the legendary Joe Boyd to make an album that character-filled and vibey.”

As for the song “Wendell Gee”? Buck hated it. (Seriously.)

“Classic” [feat. Talib Kweli]

“Classic,” produced by Karriem Riggins, may or may not be on MED’s upcoming album on Stones Throw. In other news, Green Day may or may not be guesting on the album, too.

Pernice Brothers

“Jacqueline Susann”

Pernice Brothers’ video for “Jacqueline Susann” was shot for $30. That’s probably cheaper than all the bullshit chillwave videos being released lately! PB’s Goodbye, Killer (TMT Review) is available now on Ashmont.

CHOCOLATE GRINDER is our audio/visual section, with an emphasis on the lesser heard and lesser known. We aim to dig deep, but we'll post any song or video we find interesting, big or small.
