Following his Contrail EP on 12k, Kane Ikin (of duo Solo Andata) is set to release his debut full-length this month, Sublunar. On this album, Ikin seems to be taking a particular interest in the awareness of being tied down to mythology (“Titan,” “Oberon,” “Hyperion”) while desiring to go beyond it (“Slow Waves,” “Ebbing,”). If his track “Prometheus’ Trail” is explicitly intended to signify this feeling of striving (Prometheus being a Greek mythological figure who represented a quest for knowledge), then perhaps opening track “Europa” (the sixth closest moon to Jupiter) represents the destination. But Ikin’s emphasis on “Europa” is not on the deterritorialization and subsequent reterritorialization of its music, but on the processes through which these acts are materialized. In other words, the music on “Europa” doesn’t sound like what one might imagine the music on Europa to be: by taking choral music and deconstructed club beats into darker, bleaker, desolate realms and situating them in the context of failed transmissions and interrupted communication, Ikin is instead foregrounding static, obfuscated rhythms, warped textures, the process of reification itself. It sounds at once futile and noble, and it’s all paralleled beautifully in the video below for “Europa”:
Look for Kane Ikin’s Sublunar September 18 on 12k.
Ariel Pink / Michael Alan Alien
yyyyyyyyyy’oh. My new faav thing is to get with them Facebooks and write a bunch of apolitical graffiti comments on “Humans of [City/Area]” pictures. Like, “Love the boots, Alan.” Or, like when a dude is holding a walking stick and I link ‘em to a fucking page-by-page manual on how to make a walking stick. I’m buggin’. YES! Just linked jDean up with Humans of Syracuse. Mission accomplished. I. Cannot. Stop. Myself.
Ariel Pink won’t be stopped either. Just as The Attitude Era did for Dean & Inga (and “Baby”), Ariel is bringing rawness [slash] new traxx [slash] that50 [slash] “hi!” [slash] wiener alert [slash] too late. From Mutant Sounds:
Tying everything up with a incestuous Pink bow, our previous collaborator Ariel Pink has now seen fit to lock loins with our current collaborator, New York art world wunkerkind Michael Alan for two (count ‘em two) tracks of brand new material for your perusal. With all the wall to wall hubbub being generated by the new Haunted Graffiti album, you’d think that 10+ minutes of even newer Ariel Pink music floating around on Soundclouds would elicit some meaningful attention, but this has somehow slipped under virtually everyone’s wire ‘til now. Serendipitously enough, our promotion of this collaboration perfectly coincides with our own long planned giveaway in full .wav audio quality of both of the albums that my band Vas Deferens Organization made with Ariel just prior to his 4AD world domination campaign, specifically the Ariel Pink With Added Pizzazz-s/t 12” EP and the Shits And Giggles-Trick Or Treat LP, both released on our label Free Dope And Fucking In The Streets (now Puer Gravy). The Added Pizzazz EP notably includes the glorious full length version of the track “Hot Body Rub”, i.e. The Added Pizzazz track that Ariel cleverly appropriated (and drastically edited) for use on Before Today and which precedes the arrival of the actual band Haunted Graffiti by several minutes.
Enjoy the new jams!!

INTERNET CLUB, the incredibly prolific project of Will Burnett (Datavis, co-owner of Hexagon), has just dropped a new release out of nowhere/everywhere. PURE TRANCE continues the screwed corporate aesthetics of previous releases like Dreams 3D and Vanishing Vision, but this time with many of the track titles evoking the nightlife over capitalist dread. Interestingly, the majority of the songs here cut out abruptly, halting the otherwise smooth aesthetics of the generic samples and giving you just a brief moment of contemplation before jerking you right into another anonymous jam. Even the more ambient tracks like “OXYGEN LOUNGE” are treated with the same arbitrary chop, making for a bewildering but welcomed anti-aesthetic experience that mirrors in part the confusion, illogistics, and discontinuity of extra-sensorial modern living.

Chocolate Grinder Mix 57
Tomorrow’s September 1st, people. We have made it through August. And it’s still hot as fuck, and that pisses me off, but at least it’s September. And it’s the end of a long-ass work week, the start of a three-day weekend — how could anyone be upset about that? It is impossible to be upset about that, that is the answer. If this mix has a theme at all, I think it’d be something like “pre-fall music for not being upset,” although I’m not entirely sure that works across the board. For the long weekend, I imagine many folks are packing up the Subaru and planning to GTF outta town (like I am), so maybe load this one up to the ol’ music playback device before you leave, yeah?
The mix came together a little strange — lots of different styles, from rock to pop to jazz to dance to hypnagogic-whatever — but it came together nonetheless. It flows, but perhaps not always in the direction you’d think. Flow with it anyway, folks, because this one’s got some of my absolute favorite jams of the year in it, stuff that I’ve been meaning to share for a long, long time. Heavy Midgets came to me all the way back in January and has found heavy rotation since then. Chris Weisman’s entry here is from his recent Feeding Tube reissue. There’s even a new one from Chicago Underground Duo, highlighting the insane Bill Higgins-meets-Tony Williams drumming of my hero Chad Taylor. You’ll like it. Promise. It’s me, Strauss. Trust.
