The first of Reba's works that TMT covered was last year's "NECESSITY OF FOREPLAY," comprised of glitched noises knotting a variety of mingling sounds and samples, portraying non-binary flips of male hygiene. Earlier this year, SWAN MEAT introduced a bit of fried club in the form of "RENDER/TRIGGER," beholding the vapidness of NON and Halcyon Veil, and awkward dance-floor vibes by M.E.S.H. Most recently, YOSHITAKA HIKAWA collaborated with SWAN MEAT on "BX3 HEADSPACE," developing sonic confrontation on the collaborative edit. TMT found out SWAN MEAT has a release popping on TAR soon, too, so in celebration of Reba's incredible artistic pursuits AND out of excitement for her upcoming release, SWAN MEAT boosted up with a guest mix titled MARROW. Some of the label's better-known artists includes Xiu Xiu, Deerhoof, clipping., and Black Pus (Lightning Bolt's Brian Chippendale), but it's also responsible for acclaimed underground releases by artists like Foot Village, Cock E.S.P., Gang Wizard, and Yellow Swans, as well as early music from the likes of Elysia Crampton (as E&E), Julia Holter, and Death Grips. Deathbomb Arc continues on strong. The label recently announced the debut album from rap group True Neutral Crew (ft. Signor Benedick The Moor, Margot Padilla, and label head Brian Kinsman) and a joint release with Sub Pop for clipping.'s new full-length, due in the fall. TMT hit up Deathbomb Arc, specifically Brian Kinsman (True Neutral Crew, ex-Foot Village, ex-Gang Wizard, artist/writer), for a guest mix, which has resulted in this monster of a release called 18 Years of Experimental Hip-Hop. True to its title, the mix focuses on the label's experimental hip-hop side, much of which is not available on Bandcamp or iTunes. Read Brian's description below, followed by the mix itself. And be sure to check out Deathbomb Arc's limited bundle of experimental hip-hop, which features Death Grips, clipping., Captain Ahab, Signor Benedick The Moor, They Hate Change, and more ($75 worth of music for $25!).
1998. From my room in a Berkeley duplex shared with fellow musicians Miguel Mendez and Joel Jerome, I started Deathbomb Arc in order to put out music from a favorite local act, Turbine, I thought didn't get enough love and support. I figured the name of the label should just reflect some of the various things I was into. "Death" as a reference to Metal. Bomb as a reference to Hip-Hop. Arc, as in electrical, for an obtuse electronic music reference. I quickly learned that those just primarily trying to market and sell music hate things that break the norm. Ameoba Records didn't want to carry my first release because it was "confusing" that it contained both rock and electronic elements - a statement that seems absolutely absurd now. Of course, a decade and a half later I'd be told the same sort of thing about clipping.'s combination of noise and rap. And 100% of the time, people with these fearful, conservative thoughts are on the wrong side of history. Unfortunately, the gates of the industry are typically guarded by such cowards. Deathbomb Arc has always been about smashing those gates down, and maybe even becoming a better example of a gatekeeper ourselves. We've never solely been about hip-hop, but it has always been an important part of who we are. My own band, back in 1998, Rose For Bohdan raised eyebrows for even just splashing hip-hop ideas onto experimental pop. The early side of 00's saw Deathbomb Arc release tribute comps to both No Limit Records and Cash Money (I actually got hate mail a few times saying that associating these labels with punk was an insult to punk music. Fucking racists, I tell you). By the time indie press decided it was okay to embrace hip-hop in the 10's, then suddenly noise rap was too weird for them (let's not forget that Pitchfork tried to write off Death Grips as Limp Bizkit style rap rock before they got signed to a major). Perseverance has not necessarily proven to be a solution, but with 18 years under Deathbomb's belt now, I've at least seen some pretty amazing things happen for some truly groundbreaking artists. It remains an honor to work with so many talented people. Here is a mix showing just some of the experimental hip-hop we've gotten to be involved with over the years - including three never before heard tracks from upcoming Deathbomb Arc releases: Dialer (a new project ft. William Hutson of clipping.), the debut True Neutral Crew full length (ft. Signor Benedick The Moor), and the 2nd album from the angelic Hareld. Some true long lost gems here as well!! Next on the COCAINEJESUS lineage was the interview homie-Marcel conducted with the producer and Marcel gets some wacked-out answers at times on his site, so shit is intriguing, so READ IT! Last Friday I fucked with a four-way release COCAINEJESUS dropped three-tracks on, had to snag his Twitter handle, and saw he was listed as living in Cincinnati, where my wife was born. I'm sure of it. But instead of solely luring scurvy riddled sailors to her, all are welcome! On her last album, the highly underrated and deeply haunting Forever, beds of saturated keys and drum machines lay the groundwork for her trailing vocals to float atop in hazy bliss. Marked by its sense of loss, a balance of warbles and smoothness, and a refined perfectionism, the entire album flows and floats like an abandoned boat off her craggy coast (remember, she's a siren). Seriously, revisit this gem. So, we were especially happy when Franciotti enthusiastically said yes to crafting us a guest mix of some of her recent listening habits. Dude is REAL and FRIENDLY. A combination only FEW Jersey natives can combine. And FEWER New Yorkers can even comprehend it. So dangling and mangling with good old Bryant Canelo is always the best usage of my time or your time or anyone who is with him. We were able to sit down when he was in town a few weeks ago -- transitioning from Portland to Seattle, although I met him living in Brooklyn, after he moved out his parents place in Jersey -- and we did a lil Q&A y'all will see soon on TMT. But for the mean-time, he done did us with a guest mix!! During out talk, he divulged a few things, including his feelings on the dying "beat scene," if "techno" will continue to rule the underground, and how he's always got a finger on the pulse that "trends" can't even fuck with what he puts out. For example, Bridge Burning Mix hits and hits and hits the bullseye before y'all can even consider your turn to throw a dart. Try him. Try Bryant Canelo's flavor. It's delicious. His mind is sharp, and his politics are scathing and fearless – one song from an earlier tape on the Brighton label Memorials of Distinction, Communist Slow Jams, called "r.i.p Ismaaiyl Brinsley," is a eulogy for a man who was convicted of killing two police officers. It was the night of their first event at Trans Pecos, Kanyon was first to DJ (I believe intentionally to draw in street goers and neighbors), but all I remember was his bringing in all freaks to the dance floor. Mad limbs were jutting out in directions that never repeated themselves, bass was low-level richter scaling Ridgewood, exorcisms being performed via auditory sensory immersion, and eventually the music itself birthed a baby in the back bathroom toward the end of Kanyon's set. The day before, Kanyon, Fugitive and I were driving under a high line, early October, so the windows were down, and I figured my old system could compete with the train above. I popped on Ivy Barkakati's "Obras", which did the trick. After, Kanyon asked me to send the release to him, and that night he added it into his mix for the next day's Swim Team event. Thus, within all this information, I've huge confidence in Kanyon's ability to mix. Live sets. Online sets. An album. Not being a fan of "dance" music in general, I was drawn in by the striking cover art. Duh. And after giving the preview for the tape a listen, I was immediately pulled in by Neil Reinalda's (a.k.a PHORK, a.k.a. P.H.O.R.K., a.k.a. People’s Higher Order of Royal Kinship) sharp and distancing outlet for pulse and purpose. His use of supreme head-nodding syncopation seemed to speak to my loopy noodle, but it was more so the surrounding sounds that caught my attention. A door was unlocked. The feel of the music took me to an destination wedding where the to-be-married couple had skipped town and coasted away with an ill mix in the deck, knowing fracture was inevitable, but loving the moment, all while the stragglers and hanger-ons of the wedding party waited for their romance pills to be served up with a tasty glass of cool water. No such cups of H2O produced themselves, though. The couple drove away, and eyelashes were lost and never wished upon. From that moment on, I was hooked. Neil has kept on bringing the hits, by the way. Like a frosty cigarette break, his back catalog (on the likes of NNA, Time No Place, Orange Milk, Dirty Pillows, Opal Tapes, Noumenal Loom, Player Press, and, most recently, Pastel Voids) is like a bundle of arctic intakes, filled with mind-swaddled repetition and scrapes of familar and not-so-familar sounds. Plus, there's this fucking gem. But, I digress. Being the nice chap that he is, Neil gifted us a mix of unreleased material, entitled Gathered Together And Lost Alone (Live 2015 Mix). Composed of what he describes as "... a version of the PHORK live set from last year, recorded in one take", this mix is a jagged little pill, so swallow soft. Ain't no water at this club. Erik, a.k.a. Meme Vivaldi) has been in contact with Tiny Mix Tapes (specifically me) since I (C Monster) had a Facebook account. Actually, when I deleted my name from the internet, Erik and I had a brief period of black-out comm, considering we only used Facebook to chat. Since we've linked back up, and every time we comm now, it's p much heaven in a half-pipe. So, this is a real honor to introduce a totally original guest mix by the Spaniard under his outrageous project name, AFRIKA PSEUDOBRUITISMUS. Besides his most recent release, Sunshine Scorpio Rising -- WHICH might not actually be his most recent musings, as I get weekly e-mails from Erik about new tracks/releases -- BLACK MOLLY & MONEY OM was admittedly drawn from inspiration listening to old Hype Williams works. And I can hear that influence, ya. But for me, AFRIKA PSEUDOBRUITISMUS' mix is more-so a satire on general meditation and guidance-to-success samples. Like, my boss came by earlier to chat, and BLACK MOLLY & MONEY OM was BLARING (I was on lunch, so it was W/E), I turned it down, but he was like "What do we have here? Can you understand what they're saying?" and cranked the stereo. Honestly: NO, I CANNOT, and I said that. BLACK MOLLY & MONEY OM is twisted. Though, that's no surprise considering AFRIKA PSEUDOBRUITISMUS has monopolized an entire genre of music all to himself. Don't ask me what you'd call that genre, but after a dose or two of BLACK MOLLY & MONEY OM, you're eyes will kaleidoscope into a cult symbol of emoji that only a meme may fixxx. I open up Ableton with no preset format and work from the bottom up. It always feels more natural that way." Bored Lord released his debut album last summer, Omens and Sigils, on Sturm and Klang Records. It was a woozy record, full of human error and emo synth hooks. It reflected the malaise of living in a Southern metropolis, where everyone is up to no good and growlers, head shops, and barbecue joints are to be found on most street corners. Liquor stores, too. "My songs derive from little melodies that find their way looping in my head. It's always somewhere inconvenient when I’m inspired. I’m in the shower or out and about, on the way home. I have to rush to my laptop and try to capture what I have." This particular mix he crafted for us highlights some of the artists on the Rare Nudes roster. In his own words:
This mix is a digitally and organically programmed uniform resource locator in real life. The 60 minute result is formulated by combining 130bpm algorithms produced almost entirely by members and associates of Rare Nnudes. Baron's latest, Luminous Toxin, sees her taking an all-instrumental (and therefore less hierarchical) approach, a breezy yet thoughtfully arranged embodiment of the simplistic, melody-forward songs that play in her head. And it's delivered to us like an unexpected present, like grainy sand stuck to lips, like rainbows streaming from eyeballs, like humble meditative states widened to the aspect ratio of cinema. Below you'll find a guest mix that Baron lovingly crafted for Tiny Mix Tapes, and we couldn't be more excited to share it. Titled Waiting for the Gift of Sound and Vision, the mix features everyone from Coil and Licorice Roots to Hans-Joachim Roedelius and Judy Henske. Read Baron's description of it below. Also be sure to check her out live if you're around Pittsburgh (May 19 at Carnegie Museum of Art and July 16 at Ladyfest Pittsburgh), as well as her contribution to a special audio-based sound portrait for a massive 250-artist group exhibition called JOHN RIEGERT (curated by Brett Yasko), which runs at SPACE Gallery from June 24 - August 22. From The Garment District:
I ended 2015 in the Nevada desert unexpectedly watching a Russian SL-4 rocket body re-entering the Earth's atmosphere on a clear December night, and began 2016 covering "Heroes" at a Pittsburgh music festival as the universe bid a collective and heavy farewell to Ziggy Stardust. Little did I know that this mix would become a de facto tribute to one of my favorite film pioneers, cinematographer Haskell Wexler — who also recently left this world — as I had already selected an instrumental (a cover of a composition by Love guitarist Johnny Echols) from Wexler's prescient 1969 film, Medium Cool. From India to Berlin, from interstitial moments of French horror and children's television, to cold western Pennsylvania nights absorbed by the eerie, serial tale of Victoria Winters at Collinwood — I hope these sounds take your ears to new places.
Stream below, and subscribe to our podcast here. - Glen A.
