Mando Diao Bring `Em In

Rating: 3.5/5

Styles: garage rock, blues rock
Others: Strokes, Von Bondies, Soundtrack of our Lives

Without going into the specifics of why there should be no more garage rock bands in the music world right now, Mando Diao has surpassed my expectations with their catchy and soulful release Bring ‘Em In, the band's attempt at international infiltration. Mando Diao is comprised of five individuals from Sweden who have taken the nouveau sound of today’s independent and young (you know, that sound!), and have adapted a strong salute to the Rolling Stones and many other blues-infected performers on their entire record. The mix of songs are surprisingly fresh and quickly embed themselves in your head, as you later find yourself humming the tunes while you ride the city public transportation to work (stop wasting gas!).

There are some definite standout songs on Bring ‘Em In. The opener “Sheepdog” grabs your complete attention with its memorizing synths and rhythmic guitar. Although this style has been performed by countless artists in the past and many have done it better on many occasions, the pace and performance quickly establishes the band as passionate and dedicated. The tempo continues at full force with “Sweet Ride,” perhaps the best track on the entire record. But the record doesn’t always conclude a positive reaction. “Mr. Moon” misses completely, showcasing the many traits of a faulty garage output with its wails and monotonous delivery. The music should be soulful, not belly-ached. Other offerings, like “To China with Love,” become filler and does not exemplify a truly clear picture of Mando Diao as a garage rock sensation with its ‘lalala’ dissension during the outro.

But overall, Mando Diao’s Bring ‘Em In is a strong and worthy record that should be listened to without prejudice. Unfortunately, many will dismiss it as another genre-affiliated release.
