Wavves announce third LP for summer release, promise more vowels to go with those consonants

Wavves announce third LP for summer release, promise more vowels to go with those consonants

For the last year, there’s been plenty of news about Wavves. But how much of it is music-related and not meltdown- or Jared Swilley-related? Not too much. No longer, though! On his blog, Wavves main man Nathan Williams made the following statement:

WE ALSO FINISHED RECORDING A RECORD IN OXFORD MISSISSIPPI AND ARE CURRENTLY MIXING IT. SOUNDS CARAAAZAAAAAAYYY AND WILL BE OUT THIS SUMMER. SEEEEEE YA!

Not a whole lot of details aside from a vague summer release date, but look at all those extra vowels! And here I thought he was only about unnecessary consonants.

HEALTH announce remix album DISCO2 due in June, tour; continue to capitalize letters semi-indiscriminately

HEALTH presumably have a saying: if you do something right once, remix, remix again. They did it two years ago with HEALTH/DISCO, which included remixes of HEALTH tracks by Pictureplane, CFCF, Nosajthing, and of course Crystal Castles, whose version of “Crimewave” threatened to be more popular than HEALTH’s original for a short while. In keeping with this tradition, HEALTH have announced DISCO2, to be released June 22 on Lovepump United.

Like the previous remix album, DISCO2 collects reworkings of tracks from the studio album that preceded it (a little gem called GET COLOR [TMT Review]). Crystal Castles and a few of the same guys from HEALTH/DISCO are back for more, but there are also remixes by Javelin, Small Black, Gold Panda, Tobacco, and Salem. The album’s single and opening track, “USA BOYS,” was mixed by producer Alan Moulder (My Bloody Valentine, Nine Inch Nails, Depeche Mode). And the excitement just keeps coming: HEALTH are topping it off with a US tour, ending with Lollapalooza in Chicago. (If you’re in Europe, check out the spring dates on their MySpace).

Two Jim O’Rourke collabs set for release this month (Ambarchi/Haino! Ranaldo/Heemann!)

As should be no large surprise to anyone familiar with the creative history of Jim O’Rourke, the multi-genre musical candy man has a couple of treats for this month. The first of these releases resulted from a recent debut collaboration with fellow experimental and textural music wunderkinds Oren Ambarchi and Keiji Haino. The session that was to become Tima Formosa was recorded in January of 2009 at the Playhouse in Kitakyushu, Japan. Word has it that it follows a similar musical pattern to that O’Rourke had developed in previous collaborations, such as the latest Fenn O’Berg release, In Stereo. Three distinctive soundmakers doing what they do simultaneously, reading off each other and hoping for the best? Lovely. This release has already hit the shelves and is available through Black Truffle Records.

The second O’Rourke collab being released to the public’s ears this month is an unearthing of two 17-minute-plus tracks that were recorded way back in 1994 with Lee Ranaldo (of Sonic Youth fame) and Christoph Heemann. One of the tracks was conceived based on a spoken-word poetry piece by Ranaldo, but in true form for these gentlemen, it quickly delved into an exploration of otherworldly boundaries. I’m guessing the other track follows a similar route. No news as to why Drag City has decided to give these recordings a proper release 16 years in the future, but I’m not gonna give ‘em a tough time about it. So pre-order it here.

Meanwhile, O’Rourke’s Burt Bacharach tribute, All Kinds of People ~Love Burt Bacharach~ (TMT News), is out now on Japanese label ADWR.

Villagers expand world-view, announce release date for debut LP on Domino

Villagers is Conor O’Brien and friends, hailing from a tiny hamlet called Dublin, tucked away in Irish country. O’Brien’s debut album as Villagers, Becoming a Jackal, is out June 8 from Domino Records, and the community couldn’t be happier.

Only recently did Villagers hit US soil – playing shows in NYC and at SXSW – but O’Brien has been making a name for himself since 2009, when Villagers released their first EP, Hollow Kind, on Any Other City (Villagers’ drummer’s label. Villagers really are insular, aren’t they?). Over in Europe, Villagers have toured as support for huge names like Neil Young and Tracy Chapman, in addition to booking TV spots (they might as well do Ed Sullivan – or, well, Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, at least).

It seems Young rubbed off on O’Brien, who has also drawn comparisons to David Axelrod, Robert Wyatt, and a number of pensively melancholy singer/songwriters like Rufus Wainwright and Paul Simon. Conor explains Becoming a Jackal: “We wanted to make it sound a bit like a Neil Young album, not to dress it up too much, like someone is whispering in your ear, but also to get the epic-ness at times.” Villagers guitarist Tommy McLaughlin engineered and co-produced the record (which was recorded in his home studio). Otherwise, O’Brien both designed the artwork and played all the instruments on the album, with the exception of strings and French horn.

Watch the video for the gorgeous single “Becoming a Jackal,” directed by Ferry Gouw and featuring Conor O’Brien singing in a meat cellar. O’Brien is joined on tour by a full band, so catch him when Villagers come to the US this June after their European tour with Tindersticks.

Tracklisting:

01. I Saw the Dead
02. Becoming a Jackal
03. Ship of Promises
04. The Meaning of the Ritual
05. Home
06. That Day
07. The Pact (I’ll Be Your Fever)
08. Set the Tigers Free
09. Twenty-Seven Strangers
10. Pieces
11. To Be Counted Among Men

CocoRosie tour, unveil plans to lessen America’s growing fake lady mustache deficit

Four years ago, Justin Timberlake brought SexyBack. In those four years that followed, a lot has changed. “Sexy” is no longer the solution the American people are clamoring for. We need something different, something weirder. Something more like a live-action drag version of The Triplets of Belleville but with haunting melodies, weird children’s toys, and crazy tinny vocals. So THANK GOD CocoRosie (CocoRacist?) is touring. The sisterly duo’s next album, Grey Oceans, the follow-up to 2006’s The Adventures of Ghosthorse and Stillborn (TMT Review), is scheduled to be released May 11 on Sub Pop. They’ll be hitting the road to both tout the album and bring fake lady mustaches back. Relax, nation, you can rest easy now. Your ravenous desire for charm and quirkiness is about to be satisfied.

Coachella schedule is revealed! Now all I have to do is passively report it!

Welp… here you go.

(cough)

… . .

What?

You want more?

You want that good old “TMT Hype N’ Humor” like you’re used to?

Can’t entertain yourself then, huh?

Okay fine. Here:

Great and/or horrible news for tix-buyers for Coachella, the massive, three-day Indio, California music-fest that virtually kicks-off the whole damn season of massive, three-day music fests. Yes, the official set times for the gazillion-act line-up have been announced. And if you’re going there this weekend(!), this means that the dreaded time has come when you have to start picking and choosing which bands you’re actually gonna watch. For instance, dying to see LCD Soundsystem but your lame girlfriend wants to catch Imogen Heap because she liked The O.C.? Oops. Looks like you just BROKE the fuck UP. Like Pavement but LOOOOOOVE Gary Newman? S.O.L. my man.

Well, you get the idea here. Making decisions is a tough life skill to master. And Coachella isn’t gonna take it easy on you. Although, word to the wise, you can use the handy “Coachooser” feature on the Coachella site to plan out your own personal itinerary ahead of time and probably avoid stumbling across your former girlfriend making out with Julian Casablancas after she stormed off because you accidentally knocked her down at the Coheed & Cambria set the day before. Just sayin’.
