Ach, the Sun! It Burns! Avert Your Eyes and Gaze at Your Shoes! Sonic Cathedral Compilation to Feature M83, Dean & Britta, School of Seven Bells
What comes around, goes around. Or so they say. After recent years spent herky jerkin’ around the dancefloor like hopped-up hyenas, the time has come for the sloth dancers of the world to have their day out of the sun. While persuading DJs to pump out lush swathes of layered atmos is as difficult as getting them to play Reveen, you will soon be able to stay at home instead and shimmy very slow while eyeing the floorboards of your apartment. Sonic Cathedral will release on April 20 a compilation entitled Cathedral Classics Volume One, which collects a good number of songs from the boutique label’s first 11 7-inch singles released between 2006 and 2008.
Dedicated to all things opaque and shoegazey, Sonic Cathedral is not just a label, but also a promoter of live shows throughout England (but mostly in London). For this compilation, they have gathered together the past, present, and future of the genre as both performers and remixers. Vets like Mark Gardener (Ride), Sonic Boom (Spaceman 3), Neil Halstead (Slowdive/Mojave 3), Robin Guthrie (Cocteau Twins), and Dean & Britta (Luna) all appear on Cathedral Classics Volume One, as well as like-minded disciples like M83 and School of Seven Bells. Furthermore, two Japancakes My Bloody Valentine covers, “Soon” and “Touched,” are mixed by James Rutledge and Ricardo Tobar respectively. Needless to say, with 17 ethereal sounds, you will be floating on air. Well, let’s hope it’s air and not air biscuits.

2. The Tamborines - “Be Around”

Ray LaMontagne (Pronounced /lɑːmɒnˈteɪːn/) To Sing from Gut on April Tour
Guitar-play. A soulful, smoky voice. Good looks. Add these things together, and it's Ray LaMontagne. The total package is enough to make a lot of women swoon (TMT News) and say some inappropriate things. It's no wonder, really, when he has an entire horn section trumpeting: "You are the best thing to ever happen to me" in his latest, 2008 release Gossip In The Grain (TMT Review). The album is the highest debut (a solid opening at #3 on the Billboard Chart) for the Stephen Stills-inspired singer-songwriter. While adding heartthrob to his own list of life skills, LaMontagne has even cracked some of TMT's Best Of 2008 individual lists.
LaMontagne will be bringing his charm back from Europe to a city near you starting in April. And get this: in true Bono-like philanthropic form, front row seats purchased here will have a portion of the proceeds donated to The National Children's Cancer Society. It's just one of many charitable foundations he's made contributions to.
Is it me, or is this guy getting dreamier by the minute?

Magik Markers Fall Out of Their Box, Find New Home on Drag City With Balf Quarry, Tour with Ghost

A lot has changed for Magik Markers over these past few years. Leah Quimby left the band in May of 2006, turning the Markers into a duo of Elisa Ambrogio and Pete Nolan. The duo then continued on with a much more focused, song-oriented record with the Lee Renaldo-produced Boss (TMT Review). Meanwhile, Ambrogio moved to San Francisco and then later Seattle, while Nolan moved to Brooklyn. Still unsettled, Magik Markers are now making a label change, jumping from Ecstatic Peace! to Drag City with their new record Balf Quarry.
Despite these changes, Balf Quarry ironically sees the two taking a jump back, with references to the city that used to be their ground turf: Hartford, Connecticut. Indeed, the title Balf Quarry is a reference to "an old stone pit just outside of Hartford, Connecticut."
Produced by Scott Colburn (Sun City Girls, Animal Collective, Sir Richard Bishop), Balf Quarry sees the Markers in a much darker setting. According to Drag City, the new album "is like immersing yourself in a great horror film, complete with mental dissipation, catharsis for the ears, and the most satisfying psychotic listening experience you'll have this year."
Look out for Balf Quarry May 5. Here's the tracklist:
1. Risperdal
2. Don't Take in Your Sleep
3. Jerks
4. Psychosomatic
5. 7/23
6. State Numbers
7. The Ricecar of Dr. Clara Haber

Maria Taylor Announces New LP and Tour, Actually Looks Good in Converse and a Dress
All right, we get it. You girls look really freaking cute in Maria Taylor's video for "Time Lapse Lifeline," committing minor offenses like throwing surprise water balloons and knocking out mailboxes. A lot more darling than those girls in high school who wore skirts and Converse, anyway.
Maria Taylor -- lead tomfoolerer in the video -- has already released the song, which is the first single from her upcoming album, LadyLuck. Another track, "Cartoons and Forever Plans," co-written by Michael Stipe, was actually made available yesterday via iTunes, the real St. Patrick's Day, not the fake one everyone celebrated on Saturday.
Currently in Europe, Taylor will return to the U.S. for a coast-to-coast tour with Whispertown 2000. That lady always manages to snag a string of the hearts or two.

Time To Dig Up Your Red Energy Dome Hats: Devo Announce First New Album Since 1990 And Add More Tourdates
The last time Devo released a new album (Smooth Noodle Maps in June 1990), the following things were happening:
- George H.W. Bush was president, and he had just signed a treaty with Mikhail Gorbachev to end chemical weapon production.
- Speaking of which, the Soviet Union still existed.
- The first TV show in HDTV aired.
- Universal Studios Florida opened to the public.
- I was five years old and definitely not sitting here celebrating the return of Devo with my dome hat on my head.
Devo’s new album will mark their first new music endeavor since their 2007 single “Watch Us Work It," which was featured in a Dell Computer commercial. They are currently in the studio putting the finishing touches on the as-yet untitled release. According to Rolling Stone, they’ve been contacted by 20 different producers (everyone from Snoop Dogg to Fatboy Slim), and Fall 2009 has been confirmed as a release date.

Ain't No Party Like an A-Trak Party Cuz an A-Trak Party Don't Stoooop: New Album and Tour Details from Brooklyn's Lord of the Dance Party
This is the rhythm of the nightthe night
oh yeah
the rhythm of the night
This is the rhythm of my life
my life
oh yeah
the rhythm of my life
--Corona, "The Rhythm of the Night"
Even though this song was written back in 1993, the words of Italian Hi-NRG group Corona still ring true. For many people, the rhythm of the night is the rhythm of their life, their life, oh yeah, and Brooklyn-based DJ/producer A-Trak is just the man to put the needle on the record, so to speak. And just in time for the summer party season, Thrive Records is releasing the blogger/Kanye West DJ/ Fools Gold label founder's much-hyped new mix CD Infinity +1 March 31 (available starting today via iTunes*). Perhaps best known for his work on Kid Sister's "Pro Nails" and a remix of Kanye's "Stronger," A-Trak has also won multiple DMC championships, toured the globe, and has seen a million faces and rocked them all.
He's currently touring the United States, with scheduled stops at SXSW and the Miami Winter Music Conference.

Boris, Sunn O))), Earth to be Inducted into Jarmusch's Musical Cult, Provide Music for Forthcoming Film The Limits of Control

In mid-May, the two/three droned-out and evocative metal and/or minimalist bands Boris, Sunn O))), and Earth are set to join the ranks of Tom Waits, John Lurie, Iggy Pop, Neil Young, and, of course, RZA, in the secret society known as The Jim Jarmusch Score-Writers Guild. Yes, it's true, Jarmusch, man of style and existential substance, responsible for such theoretical daydreams as Dead Man, Ghost Dog; The Way of the Samurai, and Down By Law has laid his hand on these three bands, bringing them together to help with the music side of his upcoming movie, The Limits of Control, set to be released in the U.S. on May 22.
The official ceremony of induction into the cult is assumably going to be held in an underground gambling hall in a old New Orleans cellar three days before the movie in question/vehicle of music hits the screens. The specifics of the induction are very secretive and are different for each new inductee. Prior to Ghost Dog's release, RZA was said to have Houdinied from a tank of water while Forrest Whittaker whistled the theme to The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly. John Lurie had to spend an entire weekend in a secluded shack with Gary Busie before Stranger Than Paradise and Down By Law, while Tom Waits had to become a caricature of himself prior to the release of Night on Earth. Neil Young refused to participate in the rituals when he scored Dead Man, but is rumored to have been behind them all along.
From the initial reports and speculations, we are expecting Bill Murray and Tilda Swinton, two of the movie's stars, to take in the band's essential essences, though we are not sure of how just yet. Murray was seen last Friday purchasing large amounts of blue body paint, though, and Lurie has said he's planning on taking the whole lot of the new inductees out into the gulf of Mexico to try and catch some wild bluefin tuna, which may or may not have anything to do with the induction rituals. Most likely, not, but you never know. Only time will tell.

St. Vincent Plots Headlining Tour in Support of New Record, Presumes a Lot About Her Own Fame
So, I guess every Indie Rock media outlet in the IRPA (Indie Rock Press Association) hopped on GoToMeeting.com or whatever and had a quick conference some time ago, in which they unanimously decided that “The Western World loves St. Vincent and cannot wait for her new record and subsequent tour plans to drop.” Unfortunately, we here at Tiny Mix Tapes don’t really get those meeting invites anymore, ever since we unwisely tried to voice our concerns at that whole Vampire Weekend-Weekend Conference thing last year. We just get emailed a bunch of cliff notes after the fact, and that’s about it. Oh well, what can you do? Here, let’s see what we’ve got this time...
IRPA Basics, “St. Vincent”:
- St. Vincent (Annie Clark) confirms an extensive U.S. Tour in support of “anticipated new album.”
- New Album Actor due May 5 on 4AD.
- The tour will include the largest venues St. Vincent has ever headlined (important; stress twice if you have to!) and also includes stops at Sasquatch! And Bonnaroo this summer.
- Clark to preview songs from Actor this week at South by Southwest (call it “SXSW”); two showcases there (many other bands are actually playing several more times than that: don’t mention!)
Suggested, pre-approved article angles:
- Clark’s good looks
- Clark’s affiliation with Polyphonic Spree and Sufjan Stevens (call him “Sufjan”)
- Tthe real Saint Vincent, relation to; info available here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vincent_de_Paul
Supplementary Material:
- Pre-order Actor with free, limited-edition 7-inch with “exclusive, non-album track” here.

Deerhoof Want You to Join the Band, Continue Tour in April
The unconventional rockers of Deerhoof are at it again, and they're spreading the word: Sharing is caring, people. Sharing is caring.
Prior to releasing Offend Maggie (TMT Review) in October 2008, the band provided sheet music to "Fresh Born," allowing and encouraging musically-inclined fans to submit their own versions of the song (TMT News).
Indeed, Deerhoof embraces your artistic talents, and as a follow up to "Fresh Born," these guys are offering you -- that's right, you -- another chance to show your musical chops. This time they've provided everything you need to make your very own "Buck And Judy" track. According to Indaba Music:
The Challenge... In Two PartsPart 1. Deerhoof's offering a sheet music arrangement of "Buck and Judy", as well as tabs showing exactly how Deerhoof played the two guitar parts and bass part. This way you can play parts of the song yourselves. Replace one of the instruments or add an entirely new one. When you're ready, add your contribution to the tracks section.
Part 2. Deerhoof has already uploaded the drums, bass, two guitars, piano, and vocal from their recording of the song. Use any combination of the uploaded stems (from Deerhoof or any other Indaba member) to create your version of the song. Post the finished version to the mixdown section!
To get your creative juices flowing, I suggest you add the "Buck And Jucky" video to your Saturday morning cartoons. Now, get to writing some music!

Michael Jackson’s 50-date Tour Rips off Fans via Secondary Market, Proves Charles Darwin Wrong
Evolutionary theory was proved to be false last Friday the 13th, as around 250,000 Neanderthals attempted to buy tickets for Michael Jackson’s ‘This is It’ tour at the O2 arena in London. With tickets selling out in record time, promoters have seen this as an excellent opportunity to extort wealthy MJ fans by flogging some of the best seats on the “secondary market.”
AEG Live, the organizers of Jackson’s 50-date tour, authorized Viagogo to sell these premium tickets to homo sapiens using a reliable peer-to-peer platform. However, the head-honchos at Viagogo would have been pretty unevolved to not realize what a marvelous opportunity they had here to make even more money. Consequently, they began emailing other secondary ticket brokers, “offering them packages and discounts and thus raising the price on the secondary tickets even higher” (link).
Unfortunately for the monkeys at Viagogo, AEG Live cottoned on to their diabolical plan and has filed an injunction to make sure they sell tickets to fans instead of brokers. Since neither MJ nor AEG Live were going to receive any of the profits from these tertiary sales, you can understand them going ape-shit.
Tickets are being sold to chimpanzees on Viagogo from $250 and on eBay from £170. I think the religious right have won this round.
