Are we sure that Oprah Winfrey officially ended her talk show in 2011? Because it seems as though someone is giving away free record labels. “YOU get a record label! And YOU get record label! And YOU, and YOU… ” This isn’t a huge stretch from what actually seems to be occurring right now.

Add Bristolian producer Addison Groove a.k.a. Antony Williams (a.k.a. Headhunter) to the list of those idealistically trying their hand at record label-ing. His new label is called Lost in Translation, and whether or not future releases follow the same prescription, the first 12-inch EP, Audioporn, featuring Chesus and The Organ Grinder, seems to reside firmly in house territory. I’d link you to Lost in Translation’s website, but it doesn’t seem to exist yet, as spontaneously-borne as the label appears to have been. I’ve previously remarked at how difficult it is to start and maintain a successful record label. I’d like to formally retract the former part of that statement.

This week in confirming stereotypes: documentary claims that the music industry deliberately lowered the quality of vinyl records during the 80s

It’s September 11, and what could be a better commemoration of that tragic event than… (unrelated) conspiracy theories! I should rephrase; it’s dismissive of me to refer to this as a “conspiracy theory.” The idea that the music industry tried to push the prominence of CDs by deliberately decreasing the quality of vinyl records during the 80s seems to be more within the realm of reasonable speculation than anything fantastic.

From an anecdotal perspective, it seems taken for granted that the quality of vinyl records decreased markedly during the 80s, just as the manufacturing of CDs started to begin en masse. The documentary Last Shop Standing, about the “rise, fall and rebirth of the independent record shop,” takes things a bit further, with Graham Jones, author of the book “Last Shop Standing,” interviewing several music store owners who believe that the diminished quality was, in fact, intentional.

According to Music Week, Jones had this to say: “If you go back to the Eighties as well, the vinyl that we had was all recycled vinyl. So the actual quality of vinyl recordings had started to diminish. The records were thinner and more flimsy. Everything was designed for us to switch our music collection over to CD.”

Gary Smith, manager of Truck Store, an independent music shop in Oxford, UK, corroborates the poor quality of 80s vinyl: “Certainly when I began in the early 80s we would get people bringing in five or six copies of the same album back because there’d be a fault in the vinyl. The 70s vinyl seemed to be fine and the 60s vinyl was fine, it’s just that the stuff in the 80s was really thin and not very good quality.”

Attempting to counter these claims of a conspiring music industry cabal was BPI chairman Tony Wadsworth, who told Music Week, “One of the themes that was only touched on in the film was that labels drove out vinyl, which is frankly absurd. Whenever I’ve worked for record labels, if something has a demand, you meet that demand, you don’t stop making stuff for which there is still a demand.”

Of course, the question isn’t entirely one of meeting demand, but whether labels tried to influence demand by degrading the quality of a not-so-contemporary medium. It might’ve simply been a case of shifting resources, or there might’ve been something more nefarious going on. Debate amongst yourselves.

The Bug curates his own stage at Elevate Fest, invites DJ Rashad & DJ Spinn to tear it down

You’ve seen the ads, backpacks, graphing calculators, and Lisa Frank folders with psychedelic ballerina rabbits. It’s back to school time. Now, if the smell of crisp fall leaves has your heart a-yearning for some good old fashioned education but you’re just too damn old to fit in with the freshmen, don’t fear. Because if you’ve got money to fly to Graz, Austria and attend Elevate Festival (or maybe you just so happen to be Austrian), The Bug wants to school you in the ways of Acid Ragga.

See, Elevate — a festival dedicated to music, art, and talking ‘bout politics — has asked The Bug himself to curate a stage. And so Kevin Martin, the man behind the insect, has asked Daddy Freddy and Miss Red to get on stage with him during his set. Martin has also invited DJ Rashad & DJ Spinn, Ras G, UK reggae dude Solo Banton, and digital dancehall fella Disrupt to head up his stage. Elevate has also recently asked Leif, Redshape, and French Fries to join the likes of Theo Parrish, Addison Groove, and Andres when they take over the lovely city of Graz. Elevate brings higher learning to Austria October 24-28. Tickets are available on the festival website.

Lil Wayne sues Quincy Jones III over illegal use of Lil Wayne music

We’ve all seen the documentary about Lil Wayne, The Carter, produced by Quincy Jones III (son of the more famous Quincy Jones II) because it’s available, free, on the internet. Even Weezy has seen it and he thinks it’s a “scandalous portrayal.” Weezy is also upset about the music in the documentary, upset that no one asked if they could use his music, which is used in copious amounts, throughout the movie. Which is strange, because the movie, as we all know, is about Lil Wayne.

According to my sources across the internet, Lil Wayne has filed a lawsuit against QJIII claiming that he really just wanted to be asked, just for the sake of asking, if his music, including songs “Lollipop,” “Stuntin’ Like My Daddy,” “Pussy Monster,” “Let the Beat Build,” “La La,” “Mr. Carter,” “A Milli,” and “Dontgetit,” could be used in the movie.

The producers didn’t ask though, which really got Wayne’s goat and, because of QJIII’s impoliteness, Wayne is asking for unspecified damages and “an order prohibiting the producers from using his music.” Party foul, QJIII.

Sonic Youth have big news!!!! (…about an archival release from 1985)

Hey hardcore Sonic Youth fan. Yes you, the one in the washing machine t-shirt buying Kim Gordon’s old clothes online right now. I got something you might be interested in.

Just moments ago, Sonic Youth announced the upcoming release of a rare live recording from their 1985 tour in support of Bad Moon Rising! Hold on, hold on, keep your voice down, I’m not finished. The performance was captured on 4-track cassette at Chicago’s Smart Bar on August 11, 1985. The recording consists mostly of Bad Moon Rising tracks and early performances of “Secret Girl” and “Expressway to Yr Skull” later to be released on EVOL. There’s also a never-before-released live rendition of “Kat ‘N’ Hat”.

This release will be available on November 14 via SY’s own label as a double LP (with a download card for those of you who hate the sound of quality). It’s mixed and mastered by the band from the original tape source and comes packed with liner notes by Gerard Cosloy and Sonic Youth engineer Aaron Mullan and photos by Pat Blashill and Steven Koress.

Now here’s a paper bag to breathe in, relax. I know, you thought this news was going to be about Thurston and Kim, and you were all worried. They’re fine, just keep breathing.

Prince Rama momentarily ignore the fundamental oneness of all matter and energy to announce “So Destroyed” dance contest

So, remember last week or so when we appeared to you in a dream and told you about plastic-souled soundsurfers Prince Rama’s intentions to channel a cosmic Kickstarter campaign in order to fund a “now-age psych opera” meant to accompany November 11 release of their LP, Top Ten Hits of the End of The World (which, by the way, we also told you about; how on top of this shit are we?)?? Well, it turns out that that was NO DREAM, man!!

Unfortunately, it also turns out that it’s, uh, not working out so well as of right now (you’d better get over there and pledge some cash if you want to see this happen, folks). In the meantime, it looks like the band has settled on an equally zany but considerably cheaper promotional tool in order to keep their whole “we make overtly mystic party music” marketing thing alive. It was announced yesterday that they’re now planning on holding a “dance contest” for their new single “So Destroyed” wherein “anyone can submit a youtube video of themselves dancing to the song.” And despite the obvious fact that our separateness is a bullshit illusion, the band will still pick a “grand prize winner” who will receive his/her own custom made Prince Rama dance shoes, a signed copy of the new album, and an opportunity to perform the winning dance LIVE on stage with the band. Beyond that, they’ll also compile some of their other favorite videos and feature them in the song’s official music video. See? Cheap for you; cheap for them, still wacky.
