Here’s a few things about the word “beach.” It’s the name of a place I want to go and knock back a few margaritas with the boys. In its adjective form (i.e., “beached”), it’s a sad way to describe a whale. It’s also a homonym for a genus of deciduous trees in the family Fagaceae. Now that we’ve got all that chair-moving out of the way, we can get on to talking about the new Alex G (a.k.a. Alex Giannascoli) LP, Beach Music. It’s out October 9 on Domino. You can pre-order it from Domino directly to grab the deluxe colored vinyl along with Alex G Live at The Headroom, or you can pick it up from Bandcamp as a limited-edition cassette. The choice is yours.
Beach Music is a follow-up to to last year’s indie-pop charmer DSU. It’s Giannascoli’s seventh full-length, though, and it finds him yet again quietly tracing down his momentary or sustained musical interests in the bedroom style to which we’ve all become accustomed. “Every song is coming from a different place,” he says, which is in large part a result of the prolific musician’s adjustment to touring and writing songs over the course of several months instead of furious little batches.
Check out the album’s second track “Bug” below, and try to pick him out of a crowd at his various upcoming shows with the likes of Title Fight, Girlpool, and Eskimeaux.
