Well, not exactly a new album. The Bloomington, Indiana trio is prepping an archival release, Magnetic Heads, due February 5. on Family Vineyard.

Rawer and bleaker than last year’s Bubblegum Graveyard, the 10-track album is a combination of two of their early cassette releases, 2008’s Cha Cha Cha and 2009’s Lysergic Caveman Choogle: Not for Pigs, originally released on Magnetic South Recordings. The songs are drenched in fuzz and echo with the occasional fiddle (!?) accompaniment. Check out the album’s opening track (which is also a helpful piece of advice), “Don’t Trust Banks,” below.

Psychic Ills dude Jimy SeiTang gets all minimal electronica-y in new Stygian Stride project

Jimy SeiTang of Psychic Ills and Rhyton has embarked upon a sonic odyssey across the vast, threatening wastes of ElectronicMusicLand. To reach these distant shores, SeiTang must travel past the Skrillexian monsters of dubstep, the famed sirens of sexy deep house, and shitty dance remixes of already shitty LMFAO songs. And his vehicle for this mission is a noble steed — er, musical project — called Stygian Stride.

On SeiTang’s venture into minimal electronica, he eschewed the laptop route, instead choosing to go the “vintage, analog” route to give it that special robot machine soul. Recorded by Black Dirt Studio’s Jason Meagher (Blues Control, D. Charles Speer, Jack Rose, Expo ’70) and mastered in Berlin at CGB ad Dubplates & Mastering, Stygian Stride’s self-titled debut album springs from the loins of Thrill Jockey on March 19. (Sorry, that was weird.) The release will only be available in limited quantities on both CD and LP.

Apparat releasing LP inspired by War and Peace, and he’s really hoping you’ll join his book club too

I have not read War and Peace. I’m in the middle of Dee Dee Ramone’s book, and I want to read Keith Richards’ book too. I want to read everything by Roberto Bolaño and Haruki Murakami. I want to read Infinite Jest and House of Leaves, and I want to re-read Harry Potter. I’m not sure if I’ll make it to War and Peace. Sorry, Tolstoy.

You know who has read War and Peace though? Apparat a.k.a. Sascha Ring. According to Resident Advisor and FACT, the German producer spent a month working with a 30-piece instrumental ensemble to record the soundtrack for Sebastian Hartmann’s theatrical interpretation of the novel. Even though Apparat didn’t intend to officially release any of the music, he took it into the studio after the final performance of War and Peace, and, along with Apparat live band members Philipp Timm and Christoph Hartmann, tweaked it a bit and ended up with Krieg und Freiden, which will be his seventh LP. He describes the album as “a bit of a weird record with not many beats and lots of drones,” and he goes on to say that “it’s the first record ever that didn’t hurt at some point. It’s full of imperfection because it was made by humans.”

Krieg und Freiden will be released on February 15 via Mute Records. Until then, you can stream (and download!) a track called “A Violent Sky”:

Bat for Lashes announces shortest, saddest US tour

Enchanted wood sprite Natasha Khan is coming to the West Coast this spring for a too-brief series of dates. This is the first time American fans will get to check out songs from last year’s critically acclaimed Bat for Lashes album, The Haunted Man, which got Khan a nomination for the Brit Award’s “Best Female Solo Artist” and wound up on pretty much everybody’s year-end best-of lists. But how few Yankee fans indeed will check out Bat for Lashes live this time!

San Francisco. Seattle. Portland. The Henry Miller Library in Big Sur, CA. You are the chosen ones. Fortunately the obsessives over at Consequence of Sound have given festival-goers and non-Pacific Northwest-dwellers hope that Bat for Lashes will be joining the Coachella lineup for the festival’s annual overheated roll in the hippie dust. Check out the video for “A Wall” from The Haunted Man below. It features Khan in her Mulholland Drive wig tangling with a sad fellow in a fuzzy suit. Don’t be sad, fuzzy suit dude! Maybe Bat for Lashes will play somewhere outside the West Coast soon.

Jeff Mangum adds West Coast dates, or, in Mangum-speak, opts to traverse the tan lizard-system of previous pennyweighters

Subsequent to the disbandment of Neutral Milk Hotel in 1998, the mystery of where the fuck Jeff Mangum was, and if he had given up on music, were pervasive thoughts among an expanding cult following throughout most of the 2000s. Rumors, testimonies, and outright admissions of emotional issues aside, let’s engage in some willful optimism: he was simply taking an extended hiatus, resting up for the numerous solo live performances that he had (and has) scheduled for last year and this year. Fans on the West Coast who’ve openly pined for the recording of new material will have to settle for a mere extension of dates, listed below.

Sure, Mangum is still reticent to engage with the media, but reclusiveness is officially no longer a part of that game. Baby steps, as they say. Here’s a statement, of sorts:

2013: What The Fuck Is Going On? KLF record catalog undeleted for digital release in the UK…then re-deleted

Do you know what it means to be Justified and Ancient? Have you ever been to the White Room? But most importantly, What. Time. Is. Love? The KLF, also known as The Timelords and/or The Justified Ancients of Mu Mu (or JAMs), asked these questions, and in so doing became the most subversive (and brilliant) musical duo to ever grace the UK, or anywhere. Mashups? They made a #1 hit out of one in 1986, then wrote the book on how to repeat that success. Genre creation? Their Pure Trance series of releases helped create acid house. Artistic subversion? How about guerilla advertising, street art, and the most ridiculous performances possible? Good hell, were it not for them, Banksy would have never left Bristol, and M.I.A. would never have gotten married to the son of a music label exec and used some of his money to bankroll a music video about murdering gingers.

There is a reason they never get much noise out here, though: in 1992, after pulling off their final act (a performance at The Brits that included firing machine gun blanks into the crowd), they departed the industry, and pulled their second-most subversive act: deleting their entire back catalog*. (Their most subversive act was burning 1 million pounds sterling (equivalent to $3 million today)… and filming the act.) This meant that getting their albums and singles, including Chill Out and The White Room, would be nigh-impossible to get, at least legally, and hard to get otherwise. With the advent of the Internet, the process became simpler, but access remained an issue. And with the advent of streaming services such as Pandora and Spotify, this issue became emphasized, since the draw of the latter services meant that some people were not as willing to download albums or songs anymore on BitTorrent.

So, it was a surprise to many that the entire collection of KLF Communications, the label The KLF created for their music, had been put up on the UK versions of iTunes, Spotify, and even Amazon Music Store yesterday. Those who live across the pond from this somewhat subversive publication (sponsored by American Family Insurance) were able to purchase and/or listen to these brilliant pieces freely. Things got weird, though, when with them came the appearance of unofficial albums such as The Lost Sounds of Mu and the OST to their unfinished film, The White Room. What would drive the duo to not only undelete their catalog, but also release bootleg albums that were not supposed to see the light of day? Some Discordian trick? A subversive attempt to make a second comeback?

Turns out the motives were more sinister: The KLF did not, in fact, undelete their catalog. A bootlegger managed to get into the good graces of these distributors and manipulate them into posting them online without the consent of The KLF. A Twitter-based investigation revealed the conspiracy, and subsequently the record collection has been re-deleted. It remains uncertain how a bootlegger managed to get these releases out there, other than perhaps with support from the Illuminati.

* The exception to this deletion was the Arista release of The White Room album, which The KLF had no control over. This album is also the lone release available to us Yanks, and has been available on iTunes for who knows how long.
