Domino squeezes out an Orange Juice box set in November
By Harold Shueberg on Sep 8 2010
Ever wonder where bands like Belle and Sebastian or Camera Obscura got their licks from but never thought to ask? Well, Domino has done you a grand favor by re-introducing the world to Scottish post-punk/new wave band Orange Juice with the box set Coals to Newcastle. The band, who had their heyday throughout the early 80s, will be represented by a six-disc box set spanning the band’s entire existence, including the full discography, outtakes, BBC sessions, 16 unreleased tracks, and a DVD chock full of music videos and live footage. Go ahead and scope out the entire tracklist here or below. It’s set for release of November 8 in Europe and November 9 in the US. Somehow, as good as these guys were, it doesn’t make Arctic Monkeys sound any more legitimate.

Sony verbally pees on Steve Jobs’ rug by announcing plans for a cloud-based music service
By Nobodaddy on Sep 7 2010
A mere 6,000 years after God Almighty announced the first cloud-based service (rain), Sony is honing in on the act with their recent announcement of a decidedly more metaphorical “cloud-based music-streaming service.” Sony excited a tiny, nerdy portion of the world recently when it let loose its plans to launch a PlayStation 3-based music cloud service. This service will allow PS3 users to stream their favorite songs and what-have-you from an online library for a nominal fee.
At this point, you may be asking yourself, “wait, what about Apple’s cloud-based music service that my Steve Jobs-obsessed IT friend at work assures me is coming back soon?” Well, sucks to your friend’s ass-mar, because Sony has said that it plans, like Google, to launch its service by the end of this year, with plans to eventually expand that service to include all handheld Sony devices that have a Wi-Fi connection.
See? Unlike your bearded, deadbeat, pot-smoking pals at Apple, those clean-cut Johnny Unitas fans at Sony actually have plans for the future… not to mention music label interests, which might make it a little easier for them to brew up a happy little cumulus music cloud faster than Apple can. So let’s just forget about those losers at Apple and get all of those “handheld Sony devices” that we all own ready for… oh, wait.

Documentary about The Pirate Bay asks for money from peers, gets more than it needs in three days
By Erika H on Sep 7 2010
Recently, Swedish filmmaker Simon Klose announced his plans to film a documentary, entitled TPB-AFK (The Pirate Bay — Away From Keyboard), about the popular torrent site Pirate Bay (which you may know from your illegal downloads — sorry, sharing — of Arcade Fire’s new album and episodes of True Blood). A documentary on The Pirate Bay is notion is interesting for three reasons. Obviously, the basic idea of the hippest internet-based documentary since We Live In Public comes first. But Klose also announced the project by asking for peer donations to fund TPB-AFK, via Kickstarter, which is pretty ballsy. Kickstarter opened the fundraiser for business on August 28, and here’s the real kicker: with 999 backers and less than a month to go (deadline is September 27), users have donated $30,007. Not a bad business from people who never wanted to buy media in the first place.
TPB-AFK centers around PB founders (three of whom feature in the film) and their adventures in legal land over the last year (remember this?). The money generated through the Kickstarter campaign is already enough to fund a studio and professional editor. Obviously, because the Pirate Bay trials are anything but close to completion, there is no definite release date for TPB-AFK beyond a tentative goal of late 2011 at the earliest (the Court of Appeal hearings don’t even start until next month).
While the camera is rolling in the courtroom, throughout September Klose will stream four clips from what will be TPB-AFK at the documentary’s official website.
“TPB-AFK is not a fan movie about the Pirate Bay, neither is it a journalistic piece on copyright conflict,” Klose states. “It’s an observational, character driven film about three guys whose hobby homepage became the embryo of a global political movement.” Step aside, Bergman — it’s all about Swedish cinéma vérité now.
