Atmosphere announce tour as a long-winded excuse to keep reminding everyone that Minnesota is cool

Hello, fellow Americans and other people! Did you know that Minnesota is the best state in the Union? Yep, that’s right! It’s got great lakes, a world-class baseball team, a giant mall, Viking heritage, and the best pizza ever. What a great place to raise a family and/or start a business. The bad thing is, though, Minnesotans are so modest that they just can’t make themselves brag.

That’s where braggadocious MC Slug of Minnesota’s own Atmosphere comes into play. See, he LOOOOVES Minnesota, and he knows that you will too, so he’s totally heading out on tour with best friend and DJ Ant (as well as labelmates Blueprint, Grieves & Budo, and DJ Rare Groove) on a 23-day tour of the entirety of the US. Atmosphere’s last album was 2008’s When Life Gives You Lemons, You Paint That Shit Gold (TMT Review) on Rhymesayers.

If you’re desperate to find out all 50 items on Slug’s “Fifty Things I Love About Minnesota” list that he’ll be slowly revealing throughout the tour, you’re in luck, because I happened to find out a few of them:

27: The Wienery
32: Great blowjobs
37: The fact that Minnesota is the best
44: Kirby Puckett’s 1991 season
49: Minneapolis is ranked No. 1 on America’s Most Literate Cities list, compiled by the University of Wisconsin in 2003

Weezer plot Blue Album and Pinkerton tour, “if there’s sufficient interest in the markets”

It’s difficult to pinpoint when exactly Weezer starting, uh, going off the deep end. While some harsher critics may pan the entire past decade of their career, I’ll give the Weezer dudes the benefit of the doubt and say once Make Believe came out in 2005, it was pretty much all downhill from there. Luckily, Weezer are aware of this, and in an effort to make you forget about their newly announced eighth album Hurley (and its unfortunate cover art) or their collaboration with Kenny G last year, they have announced plans to do a two-night tour in major cities, with one night dedicated to the self-titled “Blue Album” and the second night dedicated to Pinkerton. Straight from Rivers Cuomo himself (via MTV):

We have this really exciting idea to do a tour where we spend two nights in each city, and the first night, we play the entire Blue album, and the second night, we play the entirety of Pinkerton. We’re just running it by promoters right now to see if there’s sufficient interest in the markets to do something like that, and if they’re on board, it’s gonna happen.

Man takes own life at a Swell Season show

There are worst-case scenarios, and then there are worst-case scenarios. Tragically, this falls in the latter. Thursday night, Michael Edward Pickels, 32, attended a Swell Season concert in Saratoga, CA and jumped to his death from the roof above the stage.

There is little that can be done to temper news like this, and posts from SF Weekly make the story more upsetting by the minute: Pickels went to the outside show at the Mountain Winery with a friend, leaving him shortly before climbing to the roof. He subsequently dropped soundlessly onto a speaker, a mere yard away from singer/guitarist Glen Hansard. Pickels was facing criminal charges, and was out on a hefty bail at the time of his death.

The Swell Season posted this statement on their Facebook page: “The band, crew and all involved with them are shocked and saddened by the death that occurred at last night’s show. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the deceased, his family and friends.”

For more details, read the updates here. As far as we know, The Swell Season will play their remaining August tourdates as planned.

Thee Oh Sees tour, are scuzz-wielding automatons

Thee Oh Sees, on top of being insanely prolific (I mean, how the fuck do they put out so many records in such a short period?) and insanely consistent in turning out top-notch scuzzed-out rock ‘n’ roll, still manage to tout themselves as road warriors. Riding the coattails of Warm Slime (TMT Review) on In The Red, what many have said to be their most definitive release thus far, the band will be leaving trails of mucus throughout the greater US, excepting a quick stint at the Godspeed-curated ATP Nightmare Before Christmas in sunny England. Following all this tour business, the dudes and gal will be floatin’ on the Bruise Cruise with The Black Lips and a few others in February. Hmmm… no release on the horizon? Get your shit together, guys.

Pelican celebrate their 10-year anniversary with a new vinyl box set and a romantic dinner at Golden Corral

A lot of people think that Golden Corral is a terrible place to celebrate an anniversary. They think that an endless (and affordable!) buffet is just a little too low-class a place to celebrate endless love. I, however, think that assumption is way off base, and if you ask my wife of one year, she’ll tell you that an anniversary with shrimp, steak, questionable potato salad, and two plates of dessert foods is an absolutely panty-wetting proposition.

Instru-metal kingpins Pelican totally agree with me, because they’ve just announced that all four members of the band will be celebrating their 10-year anniversary at Bolingbrook, Illinois’ local Golden Corral*. In addition to the tasty (and affordable!) meal, the band will also be marking the anniversary by releasing an extremely limited (and not affordable!) vinyl box set, as well as playing two shows, one in its hometown of Chicago and one in its new hometown of Los Angeles.

The box set, available October 19 through Viva Hate Records, will be a 10-record celebration of the band’s entire catalog and is set to feature music from all four full-length records and three EPs. The records will come lovingly (and instrumentally) packaged in an “elegant” wood box made by a Chicago carpenter who refuses to make more than 500 of anything.

As mentioned above, the band has scheduled celebratory shows in its hometowns to mark the momentous event. On October 23, the band will play Chicago’s Bottom Lounge and will be joined by The Life & Times. To help make the night even more special, Munster, IN’s Three Floyds Brewery [Ed: YUM] has concocted an as-yet-unnamed but Pelican-dedicated doppelbock beer; the brew will only be available at the show and select Chicago bars and liquor stores for a limited time, so make sure you drink plenty of it while you can!

After they’ve recovered from their hangover, Pelican will head to Los Angeles where they’ll be playing an October 30 show at the Troubadour. Joining the band, and making an incredibly rare live appearance, will be “doom-metal overlords” Goatsnake. No celebratory beverage has been announced, but if the band is interested, I can call my cousin Larry in L.A. who makes a great Jack-and-Coke!

* To be confirmed

10.30.10 - Los Angeles, CA - The Troubador

AIDS Wolf announce new LP March to the Sea, spread across US

You may have noticed in the years since their inception that AIDS Wolf is not your typical Montreal band. There’s no namby-pamby ambient build-up, no Constellation flourishing of strings, and there are certainly no members of Arcade Fire involved. AIDS Wolf aim to be as jarring as their moniker, and usually succeed (in the best way possible, if you’re into your ears bleeding nu No Wave-style). These guys have released no small amount of material over the last four years: two LPs, plus splits and 7-inches aplenty. This September, AIDS Wolf are continuing their wave of destruction (deconstruction?) by releasing their third LP March to the Sea on Skin Graft, in addition to a remix album through Lovepump United (consisting of reworkings of their Throbbing Gristle cover “Very Friendly”).

Ready your earplugs and stock up on protection (you know), because AIDS Wolf are leaving next month for an exhaustive tour of North America to promote March to the Sea. You can hear a new track from the album, “Teaching to Suffer,” at the Chocolate Grinder — just make sure your parents are out of the room.
