Atoms for Peace to headline Melt! Festival. Flea will be there!

“I’m Flea from the popular band, The Red Hot Chili Peppers” — Flea

You said it, Flea! Now I know all y’all Fleaheads (fact: a flea’s head is roughly 1/3 the size of its body) already know this, but our main man Flea’s got a new gig while RHCP are between albums. It’s called Atoms for Peace (featuring Radiohead singer Thom Yorke) and they just put out a new record called AMOK (TMT Review). Pick it up now at your favorite music store!

That ain’t all, though! Not only do Atoms for Peace (with Radiohead’s Thom Yorke) have that new record out, they’re also headlining this year’s Melt! Festival! That’s in Germany! And it’s during July 19-21! While I know you’re all buying some tix now to see our main man Flea, there are also some acts playing the festival that don’t have Flea. They’ve got The Knife, they’ve got Flying Lotus, they’ve got James Blake, they’ve got Azealia Banks, but most of all, they’ve got Flea!

Throw your fleas up, y’all.

Daniel Menche putting out a new album on Editions Mego, determined to keep experimental music cool

Daniel Menche’s Bandcamp describes him as a “sound adventurer.” Even if the label is slightly egotistical and possibly too cool for “experimental music” it is also totally fitting; Menche’s output ranges from field recordings to an extended sampling and remixing of the one of the earliest examples of recorded human vocals. In a time when increasingly well-known artists like Dominick Fernow are decrying the growing rigidity of the noise genre, it’s nice to see that some of the old guard still have some tricks up their sleeves.

Daniel Menche’s new album on Editions Mego, entitled Marrige of Metals, looks like it will continue his tradition of experimentation, novelty, and downright cooolness; the album samples exclusively from a gamelan ensemble, specifically focusing on a range of traditional Indonesian gongs. The result is two extended pieces of twisted and distorted metal resonance, designed for those with extended attention spans and open minds. Menche’s use of a gong “[that] contains the deepest of deep of acoustic bass” sounds like something particularly promising to look forward to when the album drops on April 29.

For those of you with a shorter attention span: seriously cool experimentation coming late April; be there or be square.

Weezer announce Weezer Cruise II. Wait, is Jerry Bruckheimer producing real life now???

Because everyone knows that epic high-seas sequels are always better than their original-version counterparts, the scurvy land-lubbers in Weezer (that band that both your niece and your aunt like more than you do) have announced that they are once again hoping that some water and an expensive change of context will make their music more interesting.

In accordance with what I read today on Pitchfork, Rivers “Oceans” Cuomo and his nameless, faceless bandmates have announced the second seemingly-biannual Weezer Cruise (they already did one of these in 2012), which is a thing where you go on a cruise with Weezer and some other bands and they play shows for you, sell merch to you, help you put sunscreen on your back, and just generally show you how to properly enjoy a rock-music-themed-vacation. The thing is going down (oops, sorry; no pun intended!) February 13-17 2014 and will embark from Jacksonville, Florida before crashing hungover into the Bahamas five days later. Along the way, Weezer will perform three shows, including a special “beach concert with Weezer” that will take place on a private island. There will also be some photo sessions, a “fan Q&A,” an “interactive Weezer Game Show,” and more.

Other acts and more info are promised to be announced soon, and pre-sale starts on March 20 at noon. In the meantime, here’s a trailer for you to watch that I hope will at least temporarily distract you from wondering why we’re even reporting this story to such a smart, savvy, music expert as yourself. You look nice today, by the way.

Kinski play SXSW, tour US, set sail on a sea of whiskey

Austin, Texas is currently in the process of becoming a vortex sucking in nearly every single band in America, along with a few from the rest of the world. One of those American bands is Seattle’s Kinski, who happen to have a new record called Cosy Moments coming out April 2 through Kill Rock Stars. If the band can escape from the sea of booze and sweat, they’ll live to go on tour throughout April. They’ll live to see themselves cross the country from their Seattle home to Pawtucket, Rhode Island.

They will also live to drink whiskey, a beverage of which they’re reportedly quite big fans. In fact, if you can guess their favorite brand of whiskey, you can win two tickets to one of the band’s shows, an autographed copy of the Cosy Moments LP, and a few rounds of the winner’s favorite vice. But, Kinski, what if their favorite vice… is murder? Real devil’s bargain you’re getting yourself into. Fine, fine, the vice part of the contest is limited to drinks. If you want to enter that contest, you’ll need to either comment on Kill Rock Star’s Facebook page or reply to the label’s Twitter account with the hashtag #cosymoments. A winner will be chosen from random among the correct responses. All entries conducted by screaming into the wind will be considered invalid.

Kinski dates:

YouTube considering a subscription fee for music videos. How much would you pay for more Harlem Shake videos?

According to CNN Money, Google is rumored to be exploring the monetization of music on YouTube. Artists whose videos are on YouTube are currently paid royalties that are funded through ad sales, but content creators want to explore the possibility of making money off teen eyeballs by having them pay a subscription fee. While in theory this is a good idea, the underlying reason why YouTube is so popular with the most sought-after demographic is its inherent free-ness. A :20 second ad before a Harlem Shake video has not stopped the phenomenon from racking up millions of views, so having people pay a small amount to take the ads out of the equation seems unlikely, especially when this new service’s existing competitors struggle to attract paying users as it is, with only about 1 million currently paying for Spotify’s premium offerings.

But if anyone is in a good position to try this, it’s Google’s YouTube. The users are there and this move might result in even more labels getting on board the YouTube bandwagon, clearly the new front line of the distribution network for mainstream music. Whether or not a subscription fee will turn out to be more profitable than the existing ad-supported model is still unproven, so this whole endeavor could be a complete wash, but the ‘music industry’ is up for anything that might generate revenue in an age when content is presumed to be free. Good luck undoing that notion.

Camera Obscura return with new album, tour, and even more charming winter hats

The dapper Glaswegians in Camera Obscura are back with a new album, a super-lengthy, globetrotting tour, and even more charming winter hats than ever before. It has been four years since the band’s last release, My Maudlin Career (TMT Review), and the five-piece are teaming up with 4AD for Desire Lines, which is due June 4. Recorded last December in Portland with Grammy-nominated producer Tucker Martine (Neko Case, Sufjan Stevens, R.E.M., Spoon, My Morning Jacket, etc. etc. etc.), the new album also features guest appearances from… dun dun DUN… Neko Case and My Morning Jacket.

Camera Obscura will be repping Desire Lines on tour this spring/summer, starting with last night’s pit stop at the 35 Denton Music Festival in Texas and soon to be followed by a series of appearances at SXSW. Then it’s on to New York, where the group will be performing with haunting indie folk chanteuse Marissa Nadler. They’ve got a date at Primavera in Spain! They’ve got a date jammin’ with a cryptozoological underwater sea creature at Loch Ness aptly named Rock Ness! They’ve got a stop at the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal! They’re even playing Englewood, CO’s Gothic Theatre! I DON’T EVEN KNOW WHAT THAT IS BUT DAMN IF IT DOESN’T SOUND COOL LIKE MAYBE EDWARD GOREY PROGRAMMED THE NIGHT’S EVENTS AND A BIG SPIDER’S GONNA JUMP OUT OF A BIRTHDAY CAKE AT THE END, YOU KNOW, THAT KIND OF COOL. For select dates, Camera Obscura are also joining up with She & Him for a sure-to-be-enchanting jaunt across the US and Canada. Maudlin schmaudlin.
