Balam Acab’s hazy dance jams are the sound of dreams. More specifically, if you dream of a mystical alternaverse where Enya and R. Kelly got sucked into an underwater dolphin kingdom in early-90s computer adventure game Myst and decided to stay there forever and write sex jams together, well, then Balam Acab just might be the sound of YOUR dreams. In which case, don’t pinch yourself when you read that Pennsylvania native Alec Koone’s much-hyped electronic outfit is joining up with the venerable Mogwai for a string of US dates this month — starting tomorrow!
So how did this unearthly pairing come about? The youthful producer is hot off the success of playing the Mogwai-curated All Tomorrow’s Parties festival in London, where he shared stages with the likes of Mudhoney, the Melvins, Codeine, and… Slayer. And as they say in Myst’s underwater dolphin kingdom, “The rest is history cheeeEeeEeE dolphin noises ALL HAIL KING FIN, LORD OF THE SEAS!”
Balam Acab’s debut album Wonder/Wander (TMT Review) was released via Tri Angle last year, along with Mogwai’s Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will (TMT Review) on Sub Pop. You can peep Balam Acab’s latest underwater sex jam, the appropriately named “Ass Pop,” at the Chocolate Grinder.
