Bear In Heaven to release Beast Rest Forth Mouth double album, win me a Pulitzer?

In the great American spirit of selling you something twice, Brooklyn-based post-cool quartet Bear In Heaven — hot off last year’s critical acclaim of their full-length Beast Rest Forth Mouth — have gone ahead and presupposed their status as mainstay authorities and curated a track-by-track remix version of that aforementioned record. Among other things, this quasi-new release, which is to be packaged alongside the original and released as a “double album,” is currently affording me the opportunity to use words like “aforementioned,” “presupposed,” and “quasi” with haughty-yet-irreproachable contextual precision. Thank you, Bear In Heaven.

The new release, which will feature the likes of The Field, Justin K. Broadrick (a.k.a. Jesu, Godflesh), Studio, and High Places among others, is all set for a release date of September 14 via Hometapes. It also purports to building “new sonic terrain” and allows me to use the word “purports.” Bullseye.

As if all that wasn’t sensational enough, Bear In Heaven have also just announced a mess of tourdates with Crystal Castles, Twin Sister, and Mountain Man (including performances at NYC’s South Street Seaport, Pitchfork Fest in Chicago, Capitol Hill Block Party, and Austin City Limits); necessitating, among other things, the use of a semicolon and an unprecedented third paragraph to this one-of-a-kind scoop. Can you even believe this pro-ass shit that is happening right now? I, for one, can’t (or should that be “can not”?)

RIP: Garry Shider, original P-Funk member

From The Examiner:

Original P-Funk Guitarist vocalist and Rock n’ Roll Hall of Famer Garry “Diaper Man” AKA “Starchild” Shider passed away of cancer today (June 16th), a little over one month shy of what would have been the artist’s 57th birthday.

Shider was an original member of Parliment / Funkadelic and was recently seen on the 2010 P-Funk Tour.

The Walkmen to release new album… on cassette only! Just kidding. That wouldn’t be practical, would it?

With Panda Bear currently distracted by his busy itinerary of chilling out, maxing, relaxing all-cool, and shooting some b-ball outside of the school, the “I am familiar with the City of Lisbon” cred-door has been ajar for the last little while. Cue the swoop-in of monstrously tall frontman Hamilton Leithauser and his raggedy band of indie rock cohorts in The Walkmen.

Yes, their new album is titled Lisbon, presumably in homage to Noah Lennox’s adopted home, and the bulk of it was recorded in warehouses in Brooklyn (a-ha! the B-word!) and Philadelphia. They did also write at least a few of the album’s songs on trips to that titular City, which I’m sure the band would describe, if pressed to do so, as “total bliss-outs.” John Congleton (St. Vincent/Mountain Goats/Thermals) produced the 11-track jam session, with Passion Pit/Les Savy Fav veteran Chris Zane engineering. While it’s not mentioned specifically in any of my sources, I’m also pretty sure they tracked straight to mini-disc.

And even though Leithauser spoke to Pitchfork this past winter about the band’s new fondness for early Elvis and Sun Records artists, I think its pretty clear that those influences for the follow-up to You & Me (TMT Review) are decoys. My assumption is that Lisbon is chock-full of cutting edge trance/folk mashups, Gergorian Chant samples, and Javanese Gamelan hooks in the choruses. And heck, with a release date of September 14 via Fat Possum, its looking like it’ll probably even beat the new Panda Bear record’s street date to boot. That’s it, I’m calling for “album of the year” right the fuck now. Who’s with me?

Prince Rama attempt ancient ritual, subsequently appear on Paw Tracks, release debut, Shadow Temple

For those of you attempting to transcend the material world as most of us know it (and I hope many of you are) by hopping on some outer-cosmic sound waves, then Paw Tracks is once again your best friend. Following the same wavelength as acts like Black Dice, Animal Collective, Excepter, Ariel Pink, and several others, they have gone and added Prince Rama to their ever-expanding roster of artists who dwell above the conscious plane. Formerly known as Prince Rama of Ayodhya, the band will be keeping it straight psych with their first release for Paw Tracks. The album is titled Shadow Temple and, from the sound of it, is probably their heaviest and most concise statement to date.

In order to stay true to their Asian-inspired, krautrock-washed sound of borderline late night drum circle madness, the band have gone and summoned some otherworldly inspiration by recording Shadow Temple in Kurt Vonnegut’s grandson’s cabin. Similarly, they also set up station in a 135-year-old church with some assistance from AC members Avey Tare and Deakin. ‘Nuff said. Expect this one to spontaneously appear on store shelves come September.

Some dates:

07.01.10 - Brooklyn, NY - Brooklyn Bridge Park (Walt Whitman Fest)
07.11.10 - East Moline, IL - Nitetrotter Fest
07.25.10 - Baltimore, MD - Whartscape
08.14.10 - New York, NY - Studio at Webster Hall

Warner signs distribution pact with Nettwerk so that all the teenagers can keep getting the hippest music

Two labels with two separate problems. First, Warner Music Group needs to stay relevant and “with the times” by continuing to put out music by young, popular artists who can still sell large quantities of music to the youth. Second, Nettwerk, while successful as a primarily digital label, needs to reach a larger market, hopefully with the help of a large, multi-tentacled, and “well-oiled distribution machine.”

Solution? Well, why don’t these two labels with different problems just sign a multi-year distribution deal (through WMG subsidiary Alternative Distribution Alliance), covering both physical and digital releases, so that both labels can help each other with their problems? Wow, that sounds like a great idea! Nettwerk gets money, influence, and spots in multiple retail outlets while WMG gets a whole new stable of hip, money-producing artists with which to make money from. It’s a win-win, right? You bet it is!

That’s why Warner Music Group and Nettwerk have signed a multi-year distribution deal so that ALL of Nettwerk’s artists will get all of their albums distributed by the corporate conglomerate and even more music can be sold to an already flooded market to people who would still rather buy it online!

Frank Black produces new Pete Yorn record, blows the mind of your circa-2001 self.

Pretend it is, say, 2001 or 2002, and you’re watching MTV2 (remember MTV2? Totally aughts!). Some young buck singer/songwriter named Pete Yorn comes on with a video from his 2001 debut Musicforthemorningafter. The guy’s not bad, but, man, you’re a real indie rocker and no band will ever be better than The Pixies. Yeah, this Yorn dude’s okay, but he can never (never!) step to Frank Black’s weirdo juggernaut.

Now, snap back to the present, when your mind will be blown (or you’ll be mildly surprised) that Frank Black is producing Pete Yorn’s new self-titled record, coming out via Vagrant Records on September 28. Other things that might have been mildly surprising back in 2001/2002: Vagrant puts out Pete Yorn’s records now and not just those of The Get Up Kids and Dashboard Confessional; Yorn’s last record was a collaboration with the blond girl from Ghost World; and Frank Black thinks that Yorn “just wanted to rock out” on his new record.

What shouldn’t be surprising is that, while Yorn got the flu during the recording, Black didn’t really care about getting sick. Well, duh, Frank Black made a deal with the devil at the age of four, preventing him from ever getting sick. Everybody knows that.

Pete Yorn tracklist:

01. Precious Stone
02. Rock Crowd
03. Velcro Shoes
04. Paradise Cove I
05. Badman
06. The Chase
07. Sans Fear
08. Always
09. Stronger than
10. Future Life
11. Wheels
