Björk, Belle & Sebastian, and R. Kelly headlining 2013 Pitchfork Music Festival; very weird dinner party now in the realm of possibility

Björk, Belle & Sebastian, and R. Kelly headlining 2013 Pitchfork Music Festival; very weird dinner party now in the realm of possibility http://www.tinymixtapes.com/sites/default/files/1302/news-13-02-pitchfork-music-festival.jpg

Pitchfork. A swirl of emotions and established opinions just entered your head, none of which have anything to do with historical advancements in agricultural tools. More than likely, readers of TMT are at least marginally familiar with the type of music that Pitchfork covers/advocates, so think to yourself… which one of the following, just-announced headliners for the 2013 edition of their annual music festival in Chicago stands out the most:

Björk
R. Kelly!?!???!?
Belle & Sebastian

Sure, Dave Chappelle may have burned in the minds of young adults the actualization of R. Kelly’s alleged penchant for watersports, but the decision to include him in this year’s lineup is not without its rationale. Not only is Kelly a Chicago native (and inarguably one of the most successful R&B artists in recent decades), but Pitchfork, for whatever reason, has actually been pretty consistent in covering non-urine-related news concerning the singer.

In any case, there’s no need for explanation when it comes to the inclusion of Björk and Belle & Sebastian. The rest of the lineup will be announced in the coming weeks, and the festival itself will take place July 19-21 at Chicago’s Union Park.

Grizzly Bear and Yeah Yeah Yeahs curate ATP’s latest “I’ll Be Your Mirror” festival

The high priestesses of fun and mighty shindig wizards over at All Tomorrow’s Parties have announced that both the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Grizzly Bear will be curating their latest I’ll Be Your Mirror festival in London this spring. Named after the B-side to The Velvet Underground’s “All Tomorrow’s Parties” 7-inch, the I’ll Be Your Mirror mini fests take over major cities with musician-curated two-day events comprised of film, art, and concerts. Yeah Yeah Yeahs, whose upcoming Mosquito album is due April 15, will headline and curate the May 4 date, and Grizzly Bear, hot off the success of this past fall’s Shields album, will headline/curate May 5.

Over the course of two magical days at London’s Alexandra Palace, ATP promises fancy food, local ales, a rose garden (whaaaaat), moving pictures, ubiquitous DJs (like there wouldn’t be DJs), spoken word and… MAGICIANS. Yes, magicians. Really and truly. THEY COULD TURN YOU INTO AN OWL!!! So far, Yeah Yeah Yeahs are bringing you The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, The Field, Dirty Beaches, Black Lips, Anika, King Khan and the Shrines, and The Bad Seeds’ Mick Harvey doing Serge Gainsbourg covers. On May 5, Grizzly Bear present Van Dyke Parks, Tortoise, The Walkmen, Real Estate, I Break Horses, and Cass McCombs. Tickets go on sale online on Thursday.

TMT writer Collin Anderson involved in serious accident, currently in intensive care

Terrible news, TMT readers. On Saturday, February 2, TMT writer Collin Anderson and his girlfriend Rachel Firak were involved in a serious car accident. They are both currently in intensive care with family and friends.

We here at TMT are extremely concerned. Our thoughts are with Collin and Rachel. Please do the same in support. And, while you’re at it, check out Collin’s work here as “unicornmang.” He’s enormously talented, incredibly thoughtful, and does far more for TMT behind the scenes than readers could know.

Special thanks to the family for keeping us updated. Our thoughts are with you too.

We love you Collin and Rachel!

Hydra Head Records entering second stage of rehab

Last September, after nearly 20 years of releasing some of the best in metal and its various related styles and subgenres, Hydra Head Records announced they were closing their doors. Truly a major loss for music fans, the label had to cease most of their operations in the face of financial difficulties due to the realities of running an independent record label and a rapidly changing music industry (I blame you kids and your downloading). In November, the label announced a rehab plan to hopefully raise enough funds to keep their back catalog available for the long haul.

Well, now it’s the new year and the next phase of their Financial Rehab Program is in effect. The label has acquired enough funding to roll out another series of rare and limited-edition releases. Highlights include a new t-shirt designed by label and Isis co-founder Aaron Turner, some (ab)used music gear Turner used in Greymachine and House of Low Culture, as well as some Isis vinyl rarities. Hurry and look between the couch cushions and under your mattress because a lot of this stuff is selling fast.

Unfortunately, it’s “[s]till highly unlikely” Hydra Head will be putting out any new material. In the meantime, the label is planning a large-scale repressing of items from their back catalog. For complete details, check out this blog entry on the Hydra Head site.

In addition to the re-releases, a few bands associated with the label are touring this Spring. Tourdates below.
