Blackout Beach drops new instrumental album on Bandcamp! Fuck Fuck Death, this is that new ish!

Blackout Beach drops new instrumental album on Bandcamp! Fuck Fuck Death, this is that new ish!

Been yearning for some Blackout Beach? Well, today’s your day, then! Carey Mercer and company have released a pay-what-you-want digital album called 11 Pink Helicopters in the Coral Sky on Bandcamp that you can go and download RIGHT NOW! For fans of Frog Eyes and Blackout Beach, this unexpected morsel of guitar noodling and muffled reverb should come as a welcome surprise. To those out there that are downright frightened of Mercer’s intense vocal style, you should also check this out, as the record features none of Mercer’s trademark yelps or shrieks (though they’ve still attributed the tag “boar dying in a tar pit” to the this release, for some reason…). Instead, the album sounds like a collection of (very nice sounding) outtakes, with tracks stopping suddenly before they really form themselves into proper songs, each one trying out something slightly different, all still within Mercer’s general sonic wheelhouse.

This collection is significantly quieter than Blackout Beach’s great album from last year, Fuck Death (TMT Review), but it makes for an enjoyable and brief listen, with tracks averaging just under the two-minute mark. Check out the stream or fire up the ol’ PayPal account and get to payin’ what you will.

Codeine set dates for reunion tour in support of reissued albums, because there is still yearning left to do

When Codeine broke up back in 1994, it was because there was no yearning left to do. “We tried to find more yearning, but there was none to find, so that’s that,” said every member of Codeine, circa 1994. After recording three albums of very slow, very sad music, they disappeared from the earth, just as swiftly as they were slow. However, maybe there’s still some yearning left? If there is, Codeine will find it and they will find it during their reunion shows.

Currently, those reunion shows are in places like Seattle, Chicago, Tokyo, London, etc. If there are more dates to add, they will probably announce those dates very slowly. You know how these guys do.

But, hey, if you don’t know how these guys do, you can get another chance soon. On May 5, Numero Group will reissue Codeine’s three albums on vinyl and CD, flush with singles, demos, Peel session tracks, and live material. If you’re really dedicated to Codeine’s slowly rotating snowflakes of songs, you can purchase a three-album set, limited to 1000 copies. There’s nothing like being dedicated to a slowly rotating snowflake.

Devin isn’t shy about Romancing us with a tour and a little tongue action (works every time)

Some might call us easy (it’s our prerogative, damn it all!). I guess it could be said that when we crush, we crush hard. It’s true, all it took for the dude Devin (not to be confused with Devin THE dude) was a three-song EP entitled You’re Mine until we were scribbling his name in the margins of our notebooks. With a title like that, he was sending us signals, alright. Maybe it was his Iggy Pop-like stage presence and rock swagger that made us go weak in the knees, or perhaps it was his confident nature that made us feel like he was cradling us in the warm folds of his studly motorcycle jacket that really got us. Whatever it was, we couldn’t be more excited that he’s set to release his debut full-length on April 10 via Frenchkiss Records. Entitled Romancing, we’re pretty sure it’s a sign that he’s ready to take our relationship to the next level. Is it hot in here, or is that just Devin’s guitar work?

For the remaining days of February, he’ll be playing a few East Coast shows with Heartless Bastards and then it’s on to London for a tip of the hat to the English people and to The Drums for one show.

Romancing tracklist:

01. Masochist
02. Born to Cry
03. New Horrors
04. I Don’t Think I
05. I’m Not a Fool
06. My Solitude
07. Run
08. Forever Is Only a Moment
09. I Died
10. You’re Mine
11. Too Soon
12. White Leather

tUnE-yArDs announce summer tour WHAT’S THAT ABOUT WHAT’S THAT ABOUT

“WHAT’S THAT ABOUT!? WHAT’S THAT ABOUT!?” It was the question heard around the world, but only by anyone who happened to be listening to tUnE-yArDs’s w h o k i l l (TMT Review), released on 4AD last year. Well, Merrill Garbus, let me turn that one around on you. Prefix Magazine claims that you are going on a pretty lengthy summer tour. WHAT’S THAT ABOUT!? WHAT’S THAT ABOUT!? Oh, it’s exactly what you said it was about: a summer tour. That said, you are not coming to the place where I live and really, what’s that about?

Eh, I guess I can’t blame Ms. Garbus, though, considering that she seems to be going to every other place on the planet in the next six months. She’s touring through much of spring and the remaining bits of winter, doing runs of dates in Europe and North America. After that, she’ll recharge her psychic energy or something and kick off her summer tour with a string of North American dates, followed by some overseas festival, and then finally a few more North American dates. By the way, a few of those dates are with St. Vincent! You like her, right? You told me you did once.

RIP: Christopher Reimer, guitarist for Women

From the National Post:

The Calgary music scene was in mourning Tuesday with news that Christopher Reimer, guitarist for local noise-pop band Women, passed away in his sleep.

Women, who had released two albums to great acclaim, had been on indefinite hiatus for more than a year since the release of their last album, Public Strain.

The group had toured the world and performed with acts ranging from Mogwai to Wire.

The cause of Reimer’s passing as well as funeral arrangements have not been announced yet.

Fiona Apple announces 2012 tourdates. She’s the one who plays the harp, right?

It’s been a while since we’ve seen or heard from Fiona Apple. Of course, this is most likely because of the multiple legal battles with Sir Paul McCartney, the ghost of René Magritte, and that apple-eating pirate from Pirates of the Caribbean, in which she’s been embroiled for the past seven years concerning her rights to, variously, eat apples, take press photos with apples, and have Apple as a last name. They’ve kept her pretty busy since 2005’s Jon Brion-augmented Extraordinary Machine. But now that Steve Jobs has passed on and Paul’s busy lobbying to replace that Mac computer start-up tone with a new track of his called “Wild Honey Pie, 800% Faster,” the least consequential of all of the humble apple’s would-be masters and commanders has told all her FB friends that she is thinking of sneaking out for a couple of red-delicious shows this march, including Pitchfork’s “Best New SXSW Showcase” on March 15 in Austin, Texas.

Hmm… tourdates? Festival showcases?? Could this mean that Fiona’s elusive 4th LP is finally coming out this year?!? Well, probably. But since the last time we were told to expect her new album soon was an embarrassingly long time ago, I’m just going to keep my mouth shut about that this time so that when I’m linked-to in some future story, I don’t look like a fool. Tickets go on sale this Friday, February 24, at noon, because noon is the most popular apple-eating hour of the day.

Fiona Apple 2012:

03.19.12 - Chicago, IL - Lincoln Hall
03.21.12 - Washington, DC - TBA
03.23.12 - Brooklyn, NY - Music Hall of Williamsburg
03.24.12 - Atlantic City, NJ - TBA
03.26.12 - New York, NY - Bowery Ballroom
03.27.12 - Boston, MA - Royale Boston
