Summer’s creeping up real fast, and I’m jonesin’ to make like Jack Kerouac and hit the road. I just want to be in jorts and write long, wild poems while zipping down the highway, you know? How about we pile into an old Jeep with Blitzen Trapper and catch a few shows? They’re still real keen on American Goldwing, which came out on Sub Pop back in September, way before road trip season. Now, we can drive with the windows down and listen to Neil Young cassettes and stop to drink whiskey with old friends on their back porches and maybe swim in a river or two. I’ll even learn how to play the harmonica.

Come on. I know you’re still bummed that you overslept on Record Store Day and couldn’t snag a copy of Blitzen Trapper’s “Hey Joe”/”Skirts on Fire” 7-inch, but cheer up, buttercup. You can watch the brand spankin’ new video for “Stranger in a Strange Land” as many times as you want. It’s three minutes of good old-fashioned Alaska rambling. Just the thing to get you in the spirit for a summer that’d make Dean Moriarty proud.

Death Grips extend their already extensive spring/summer tour

America and Europe have clearly embraced the loveable bunch of rascals we endearingly refer to as Death Grips (TMT Review). Case in point? The band, already scheduled to play every single music festival in Europe and mid-sized venue in the Northeast, has announced the expansion of their tour into America’s heartland and great frontier West. No longer only available to the upper echelons of ‘liberal’ society in socialist Europe and America’s snooty East Coast cities, it’s the everyman in Kansas and Colorado’s turn to enjoy some true American experimental hardcore hip-hop live and in person.

Even in Chicago, where I’m located, the early show time (6:30 PM) was clearly chosen so Death Grips’ older and younger fans have a chance to make it out. I hear nursing homes and primary schools are organizing bus trips to The Bottom Lounge this summer as the demand is so high amongst these otherwise disenfranchised sections of the music enjoying public. When a band goes on at 12:30 AM, it’s just too late for Grandma, no matter how much she likes the new Acid Mothers Temple record!

Join the legions who have already purchased tickets and plan to see Death Grips when they roll through your town — if you live in two out of the seven continents, chances are they won’t be too far away at some point in the next three months.

El-P announces “male bonding”-style road trip with Killer Mike and Despot, will also play shows to ensure they have spending cash

If I didn’t know better, I’d say that El-P must have just graduated from high school, because he’s recently let the world know he’ll be spending his summer on a month-long road trip across the US with his best buddies.

The Brooklyn-based rapper/producer/businessman has announced that, along with Killer Mike (who El-P recently produced an album for), Mr. Muthafuckin’ eXquire and Despot will be going on a tour of America in support of El-Producto’s latest album, Cancer4Cure, set for release May 22 through Fat Possum. Even though he’s only telling his closest friends, TMT has learned that the real reason for the road trip is that the four best friends are just really sad that their glory days at George Washington High School are coming to an end and are looking for one last amazing whirlwind of life to cap off an adolescence spent learning, growing, and becoming the men that their mothers raised them to be.

The whole trip will kick off on May 21 at Santos Party House, a day after graduation, and will be competing with Tiffani Sanders’ massive party at her family’s cabin on the shore of Lake Gollawolla and, according to our sources, is splitting the George Washington High School senior class in two. “I heard that Tiffani’s party is gonna be filled with alcohol and coke but I could never miss the house party at Santos’ with El-P and his boys. That guy makes some sick-ass beats and they can all rap like frozen meat: raw, yo!” said GWHS class president Richard Mathers.

“Tiffani is, like, my best friend and all, but, like, I could never miss the party with El-P. I would rather, like, die, you know? Missing that party would, like, be the worst decision I made since, like, deciding to go to college at, like, a state school, ICK!” Mathers’ girlfriend Barbara Morse added.

El-P, knowing that anyone with half a brain will be at his party, has been stoking the anticipation for the road-trip/tour and for his next album by releasing tracks from Cancer4Cure, just yesterday supplying the world with the second track from the record. Head on over to that website and check out “Tougher Colder Killer.”

Demdike Stare’s Miles Whittaker revives his Suum Cuique persona with Ascetic Ideals, continued creepiness

Oh lord, just when I had personally resolved the uncertain pronunciation of the “Demdike” in “Demdike Stare,” Miles Whittaker has to go and revisit his Suum Cuique project, which premiered in 2010 with the limited-edition release of an LP titled Midden.

Rather than speculate on the pronunciation of this particular moniker (which, by the way, looks pretty crude if you’ve been perusing the darker side of the internet lately), let’s take a gander at its actual meaning. “Suum cuique” is the Latin equivalent of the well-known idiom “to each his own.” More recently, the idiom itself has been taken to mean that everyone is free to pursue their own interests and to have their own preferences, but its Latin precursor dealt with more specific notions of social justice. The phrase was popularized by Roman philosopher and politician Cicero, who once stated, “Iustitia suum cuique distribuit,” meaning, “Justice renders to everyone his due.” In other words, people have certain rights (such as property) in accordance with their abilities and their related contributions to society. Someone cue up the music from those NBC public service announcements. Hey! Learning is fun!

On June 5 (May 28 in the UK), Whittaker will be releasing Ascetic Ideals, his second album as Suum Cuique. The album will be released on vinyl in a limited edition of 700 copies through Young Americans, an imprint of Modern Love. Musically, like most of Whittaker’s work (both solo and as one-half of Demdike Stare), I’m betting a clean pair of underpants is in order, especially if you’re in Eastern Europe and plan on soundtracking an evening stroll.

Ascetic Ideals tracklisting:

A1. Strohtopf
A2. Kuiper Anomaly
A3. Atlas Levels
A4. Core Value
B1. Intonation
B2. Deux Ex Machina
B3. Proton Aesthetic
B4. Dionysus Decay

La Sera promotes flossing on US tour in May

Cut the crap, everyone! We’ve got to talk about flossing. Flossing is important. If you don’t do it, your gums will bleed. They will bleed and bleeding hurts! Nobody wants that. You know who (probably) flosses? Katy Goodman. The Vivian Girls bassist is someone who (probably) does not have bleeding gums. Ever heard of a Vivian Girls show that ended in a wave of gumblood? No, you haven’t. In her non-Vivian Girls time, Goodman’s been heading up her own, dream-poppier solo project, La Sera. Just in the last month, she put out her second La Sera record on Hardly Art, Sees the Light, Because There’s Not a Massive Wave of Gumblood Blocking the Light.

Like a public speaker talking to a high school health class (though probably more interesting), Goodman’s going on tour as La Sera this spring to promote proper dental hygiene. You kids probably don’t floss, so this will be good for you. She will also play some songs. Those songs are also about flossing. All is floss.

La Sera dates:

05.10.12 - Boston, MA - Great Scott
05.11.12 - Montreal, QC - Il Motore
05.12.12 - Ottawa, ON - TBD
05.13.12 - Toronto, ON - The Shop under Parts and Labour
