Excuse me, but were you using your mind? You were? Gee whiz, we’re all just real sorry that we had to go and explode it like that. Here, let me give you our contact information. That’s Acid Mothers Temple via PO Box 55542 on the Melting Paraiso UFO, The Cosmos. Yeah, I know, “snail mail” and all that, but we just can’t seem to get a decent broadband connection out on the interstellar fringe of psychedelic understanding. Actually, if you don’t have money for the postage, next month we’ll be adapting human forms and traveling Earth’s “North America” for a series of what your kind calls “live concerts.” You can catch us then if you want, but unless you want your mind blown all over again, you’d better leave your head at home. Wait a minute, you can’t safely dislodge your skull from your spine like normal cosmic explorers? Jesus, what are humans good for, anyway?

Torche sludges across America with Coheed and Cambria (who will be shrieking across America)

Torche, those detuned panhandlers who were conceived from the aborted fetus of Floor, leave in April to tour in support of their split 12-inch with Boris from 2009 on Hydra Head. The tour (with Coheed and Cambria) begins April 22 in Charlotte, giving the real North Carolinian stonermetalheads two days to come down before getting blasted again before the Torche show.

Check out a live version of “King Beef” from the aforementioned split here.

The Doors documentary to surface in April, high school kids who really “get it” swoon in anticipation

Ah, just what we need… another classic rock doc. I guess this is what happens when Cocksucker Blues grows another layer of dust on it or something… or people get tired of digging up Rapidshare links to it.

In any case, the first feature-length Doors documentary is on the horizon, offering an insider’s look at the short years between The Doors’ formation and Jim Morrison’s demise. The documentary, titled When You’re Strange and written and directed by Tom DiCillo, will see its theatrical release on April 9 and has already screened at Sundance, Berlin, Deauville, and San Sebastian film festivals. But wait! There’s more! When You’re Strange has an accompanying soundtrack to be released on March 30, and will include 13 songs from the Doors’ six albums, in addition to vintage recordings from The Ed Sullivan Show.

Well, I’d better go and find my best Morrison t-shirt. I think I left it somewhere in my sophomore year of high school’s dresser drawer… hmmm.

Pirate Bay buyer wanted to also purchase Mininova

The man who wanted to purchase The Pirate Bay also attempted to purchase Mininova, it has emerged. In the fall of last year, Global Gaming Factory (GGF) agreed to buy The Pirate Bay. The company aimed to turn it into a legal music downloading site. At the same time, however, GGF’s CEO Hans Pandeya had “finalized a contract last summer” to also acquire Mininova.

In August 2009, Pandeya cackled to TorrentFreak that he would “try to buy as many torrent sites as possible.” His deal with Mininova rested on the outcome of a case brought against the torrent index in the Netherlands. The Dutch anti-piracy outfit BREIN, who took the case to court, won and Mininova was forced to remove all copyright-infringing torrents. Consequently, the deal fell through.

Clearly Pandeya’s deluded aim was to monopolize the market in legal music downloading (hasn’t he heard of iTunes?). By acquiring both The Pirate Bay and Mininova, he hoped to grab the two most popular file-sharing sites and turn them into legal enterprises, hoping their millions of users would continue to use the sites. However, both deals collapsed.

This man’s unparalleled evil is truly chilling. In a licensing negotiation with one of the major labels in London, Pandeya explained to his colleague Wayne Rosso, “I’m going to buy Mininova too and eliminate all the competition.” He also told CNET that “I have a lot of secret plans I’m working on.” Holy shit! Run for the fucking hills!

Watch out, Flaming Lips: Johnny Rotten to cover Dark Side of the Moon too?

Nostalgia — or whatever this is — is a funny thing. Last year, The Flaming Lips and Dennis Coyne’s band Stardeath and White Dwarfs reinterpreted Pink Floyd’s classic Dark Side of the Moon (TMT report). Henry Rollins and Peaches guested on the recording, and this summer, the whole thing is happening again live at Bonnaroo. While strange, it was not any more surprising than hearing about Deerhoof and Xiu Xiu’s plans to cover Joy Division’s Unknown Pleasures live this spring.

Such homages are bizarre, but the connections are nonetheless predictable. Recently, The Quietus editor John Doran interviewed John Lydon, who revealed his own (and much more bewildering) willingness to cover Dark Side of the Moon. Wayne Coyne is today’s psychedelic legend; he covers Dark Side, and it’s just another day in Oklahoma City. But John Lydon, a.k.a. the frontman of (the newly reunited) Public Image Ltd., a.k.a The Sex Pistol’s Johnny Rotten, joining forces with Pink Floyd? “I’d love to go into the studio and do something with the album with them,” he mused. Who knew?

Apparently, such a collaboration is more plausible than one might think. During the same interview, Lydon admitted that Pink Floyd asked him in 2008 to perform some of Dark Side on stage with them at a concert in Los Angeles. He very nearly did it, too, but explained to Doran that he would rather play alongside the group in a studio than for a crowd of “20,000 people.”

Of course, this isn’t the strangest thing to hear from Lydon, who, aside from his infamous thousand-and-one crazy, punk antics, once starred in a British commercial for Country Life butter. For now, his casual statement of intent is all we have to go on for a Dark Side Goes Rotten project, but who knows what the future will hold?

Harvey Milk announce new album; no, Sean Penn did not contribute

When I think of Harvey Milk, my thoughts first turn to Sean Penn’s role as the first openly gay politician, not the sludge-metal band from Athens, Georgia. Unfortunately, Sean Penn did not contribute to their new album, A Small Turn of Human Kindness, due out May 18 on Hydra Head.
