The Broken West Get Homesick, Release Sophomore LP This Fall

Okay, maybe it's just me on this one, but after you appropriate some Samuel Beckett action for the title of your debut LP (in this case, The Broken West's minor wave-maker I Can't Go On, I'll Go On released in early 2007 via Merge), you've really gotta throw-down big time with the weightiness of the ol' sophomore effort. Right?

...Or, you could just chill in your backyard and write another record in between alternating rounds of sinking brews and sinking bean bags, I guess! Because that's just what the LA indie-pop quartet went and did with their second (and infinitely less cleverly-titled) LP, Now or Heaven. Well, figuratively, at least. Says the band's press release:

While many bands' second albums end up being about the road, Now or Heaven originates from home, the longing to get there, and all that comes from being there. The perspective generated from time spent on the road and the distance traveled led to a new, unnamable development.

In other words, there are a lot of songs written from Dorothy Gale's post-Oz point-of-view on this record. I don't really see their cover of "Over the Rainbow" on the tracklisting though. Hmmm...

Anyway, this new batch of homebody backyard barbecue jams will see release September 9 of this year via the wonderful wizard of Merge and will be preceded by a smattering of shows along the West Coast (staying close to home, you know) and one lone summer festival date, after which any band that hates the road this much will presumably breakup and start a co-op farm or something. Ziiing!

Goodnight, everybody!

There's no place like home:

It’s Never to Early to Release the Bats! Shellac, Pissed Jeans, and More at Yet Another ATP-Sponsored Event

Ahhh yes. It is coming. I can feel it on the wind. I can read about it on the internet. That most special time of the year, Halloween, is on its way. In only four-and-a-half short months, you and I can celebrate all things dark, spooky, and named in honor of a Birthday Party song. Specifically, we can do this at ATP's now annual Release the Bats concert in London. While the lineup may not exactly be creepy/kooky/altogether ooky, it's still a pretty damn sweet roster, and if I remember last year correctly, a great excuse to make eyes at sexy, younger English boys in tight jeans and Robert Smith hair.

Festivities go down at The Forum in Kentish Town (north London), and ATP encourages attendees to dress up in spooky, Halloween-y costumes, or in outfits somehow related to the participating bands. Imagine the conceptual delight you will find in dressing as Shellac! Or Wooden Shjips, Om, Pissed Jeans, DJ Andy Weatherall, or the promised "very special guest." Note: I am guessing the special guest is not a sexy nurse, sexy cheerleader, or sexy teacher, so please plan your costume choices accordingly.

Imaad Wasif With Two Part Beast Might Like Firefox 3 If They Give It a Try; Direct Links to Firefox 3 In the Story

Screw the new albums coming out this week by Coldplay, Wolf Parade, Silver Jews, The Notwist, and Ice Cube. And fuck them too, because Firefox 3 (which Imaad Wasif may or may not use) was released today! Shit's been in active development for 34 months, but today's now officially "Firefox Download Day," which means millions of users are attempting to download the new and surely improved web browser, in an effort to set a Guinness World Record for the most software downloads in one day.

Since Mozilla's homepage is relatively unstable due to the sheer amount of downloading, here are some direct links, courtesy of the men and women of TMT. Enjoy:

And as a bonus, here are some tourdates for Imaad Wasif With Two Part Beast, a band who may or may not have anything to do with Firefox 3:

Girl Talk to Release Feed The Animals Thursday, But Who Cares When TMT Is Hiring Newswriters!

Check it out! MTV has exclusive info (with great use of double-dashes) about the new Girl Talk album, Feed The Animals: "As luck would have it, an MTV News crew was actually with Gillis at his Pittsburgh home late Monday when he received the mastered version of [Feed The] Animals -- according to our producer, not only does the album sound great (snippets of Kanye, Shawty Lo, Madonna and Heart -- to name just a few -- are sprinkled throughout), but Gillis seemed so happy with it that he asked us to decide when it should be released to the 'Net -- our producer picked Thursday, and that's the day you'll be able to hear it."

Now, check out this amazing question and answer from Pitchfork and Gregg Gillis himself:

Pitchfork: Have you settled on a date for when it's going live?

GG: Pretty much as soon as possible. I finished it Tuesday night (June 10), and the guy who has mastered all my albums is starting the mastering process today. He promised me he'd be done by Monday, so that would give me maybe a couple days to listen to it, but I imagine it will be on the internet by Wednesday or Thursday [June 18 or 19].

Cool!

I'd like to thank MTV and Pitchfork for making this story possible. Also thanks to Mr P, who continues to be a source of inspiration for these stories (he assigned this one to me). If you think you can write a better story than this, maybe you should apply to write news for TMT. (But, you know, I've been around here for a long time, and there's a reason why, so don't expect to be immediately writing at my caliber. But hey, give it your best shot.) Finally, I'd like to thank TV sitcom, Everybody Loves Raymond. I've jerked off to those sexual episodes many times, so thanks!
