Brooklyn’s Liturgy sign to Thrill Jockey, plan to release second LP in the spring, also plan to weird-out the South this week

Brooklyn's Liturgy sign to Thrill Jockey, plan to release second LP in the spring, also plan to weird-out the South this week http://www.tinymixtapes.com/sites/default/files/liturgy.jpg

Minimalist arty farty black metal band Liturgy are hitting the road for most of November, stopping mainly around the East Coast, South, and mid-Atlantic. Though, calling them “black metal” seems weird to me, even though black metal is for nerds. I mean, I know they’re all “rawr” and shit, but there is also a faint prettiness to their music. Anyway, they just signed with Thrill Jockey and will release their sophomore LP in the spring of 2011. Definitely check them out if they hit your town. I won’t, because they’re playing my town on a Sunday, and that’s THE LORD’S DAY.

Their debut full-length Renihilation is out now on 20 Buck Spin. Tourdates below.

Chris Forgues (Kites, Fort Thunder) releases Powr Mastrs #3 comic, would like to buy a vowel.

Fans of Indie Pop legend Kites and its spin-off projects — the Best Coast cover band Daily Life (with Sakiko Mori) and the Christian devotional music solo project Mark Lord — rejoice! While Kites’s lead singer Chris Forgues’ (aka C.F., CF, c.f., cf, and as many other combinations of “c” and “f” as mathematically possible) long-awaited collaboration with Sufjan Stevens (Rhode Island: Small like Baby Jesus) has been delayed, the Fort Thunder alum is offering fans a big consolation with the release of the third installment of his comic book, Powr Mastrs, from PictureBox on November 15.

The series, drawn in CF’s signature pencil variation on the ligne claire style and set in a mysterious world called New China, stars a loveable cast of misfits who enjoy beard parties and graphic sex with jellyfish. The new issue features a racecar that is constantly changing shape and, in a special color section, a touching scene of lesbian erotic humiliation/BDSM punctuated by golden showers.

CF will also be touring in support of the new book, with friend-in-Christ Brian Chippendale on the dates we previously reported. As Sufjan would say, “Come on! Feel The Urination!”

Powr Mastrs #3 book release dates:

11.14.10 – Providence, RI – Ada Books
11.18.10 - New York, NY - The Strand
11.19.10 - Portland, OR - Floating World Comics
11.20.10 - Los Angeles, CA - Family
12.02.10 - Toronto, ON - The Beguiling

…And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead return with seventh album Tao of the Dead, band name still …And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead

…And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead are back! On February 8, …And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead are releasing Tao of the Dead through their own Richter Scale imprint, which was created to rescue the group from the tyranny of major label Interscope (responsible for releasing three of their albums, including the one you’ve all heard, Source Tags & Codes) with the release of 2009’s The Century of Self. We are told that Tao of the Dead, …And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead’s seventh album, sees …And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead experimenting with producer Chris Coady (Beach House, Blonde Redhead, Yeah Yeah Yeahs), exemplified most obviously with a 15-minute track titled “Tao of the Dead Part 2.”

This sounds serious, readers. Not convinced? The first single off the album, due November 29, is called… “Summer Of All Dead Souls.” Uh, Debbie Downer alert? The tracklisting hasn’t been announced yet, but here are track titles that our undercover detectives think might be included:

- “Crying Souls, Never Again”
- “Save Yourself, For You Need It”
- “Dying Wishes (Invisible Cries)”
- “Wailing Wars”
- “Dead Eyes Burning”
- “Candles in a Dying Corpse”
- “Living Full of Dread Pt. II”
- “Melted Eyes”

Dates with and without Rival Schools coming soon.

Ducktails announce date for third full-length album, Ducktails III: Arcade Dynamics, not unlike his previous two

Follow-ups are nice. You get a lollipop and presumably a bill of good health at the doctor’s, a call that the LP you special ordered has come in, or a friendly but tepid e-mail reply to the regrettable Facebook message you sent your ex in a drunken haze of self-pity and sexual frustration. Well, this summer, we reported that Matt Mondanile, a.k.a. Ducktails, was planning a third album, Ducktails III: Arcade Dynamics. We’ve been in the dark since then about a date for this anticipated third work of New Jersey psych pop, but the wait for waiting time details is over.

It was recently confirmed that the album will be coming out January 10, on Woodsist as previously announced. Now you can rest easy and spend the rest of your afternoon fixating on something important, like this.

Jens Lekman plays Los Angeles, Brooklyn in December; happy holidays to West + East coasts, but screw the Midwest

Ever since Jens Lekman moved from Sweden to Australia, we haven’t heard much from him. There were some tracks released digitally this year, but what’s up, Jens? Why are you actually so silent? Anyone who’s really into Jens knows that he’s not entirely unresponsive to the world — he’s one of the few artists who encourages fans to write him letters, centering on a topic he provides monthly (October was “self portraits”; this month it’s “fine print”). And Jens clearly does what he can: this December, he announced to his fans that he’ll be working in New York and will therefore grace Brooklyn with a show. A few days before, he’s playing a show in Los Angeles (the only other date scheduled in the US), so you know, I guess he really is all over the place. At least he has an excuse for keeping us in the dark so long — for now.

Dates:

12.04.10 - Los Angeles, CA - Mondrian Hotel Skybar
12.10.10 - Brooklyn, NY - 450 Union St.

Former Supergrass guitar player Charly Coombes releases new EP, tours UK

Former Supergrass guitar dude Charly Coombes is rockin’ his merry way across the UK this fall, with a new band and a new EP. (You may also know Mr. Coombes as the keyboard player in The 22-20s.) Known as Charly Coombes & The New Breed, the group’s sound combines elements of Northern soul, garage rock, and indie pop, and despite their short time in existence, CCATNB have already shared the stage with The Coral and Dave Grohl. The group’s latest recording, the Waves EP, was produced by another Supergrass dude, Charly’s brother Gaz, lead Supergrass dude. Ahhhh! Keepin’ it in the family at its finest.

Waves EP is set for a November 29 release in the UK.
