Chris Corsano and Bill Orcutt are touring together, playing the guitar like drums and the drums like guitar

Here at TMT HQ, we always celebrate albums we like. We always celebrate with cupcakes. When we heard Bill Orcutt’s free-blues guitar on How The Thing Sings last year (TMT Review), Ze Pequeno baked funfetti cupcakes with blue frosting. When we heard Chris Corsano’s improvisational drum work on Cut back in June (TMT Review), E. Nagurney baked chocolate chip cupcakes with sprinkles. Orcutt made our list of faves last year, and Corsano’s prospects are looking bright this year.

When we heard that Chris Corsano would be playing a string of shows with Bill Orcutt, Squeo ran right out and bought a piñata filled with Pokemon cards. Check out the dates below; I have to see if anyone will trade me their holographic Gyarados.

RIP: Hal David, legendary songwriter and Burt Bacharach music partner

From SFGate:

Hal David, the stylish, heartfelt lyricist who teamed with Burt Bacharach on dozens of timeless songs for movies, television and a variety of recording artists in the 1960s and beyond, has died. He was 91.

David died of complications from a stroke Saturday morning at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, according to his wife Eunice David.

He had suffered a major stroke in March and was stricken again on Tuesday, she said.

“Even at the end, Hal always had a song in his head,” Eunice David said. “He was always writing notes, or asking me to take a note down, so he wouldn’t forget a lyric.”

Xiu Xiu celebrate The Air Force’s sixth anniversary by reissuing The Air Force, touring the world

Happy sixth anniversary, Xiu Xiu’s The Air Force (TMT Review)! I remember 2006, you were the youngest, tiniest Xiu Xiu album. Now you’re all grown up, given that you subscribe to a worldview that makes a six-year-old a grown-up. You’re great and I love you. Not everyone loves you, though. They don’t love you, because they don’t know you. The Air Force has been out of print for years. In celebration/solution of the album’s sixth birthday, Polyvinyl is reissuing the record on 180-gram black vinyl on October 9. Xiu Xiu leader Jamie Stewart has remastered the album, while also re-imagining the record’s packaging with his brother (and frequent Xiu Xiu designer) Joe Stewart. Now, The Air Force, everyone will love/like/hate/be indifferent to you.

The Air Force reissue will also launch the band into their fall world tour. Pa-shoo! That was a launching noise? The noise-pop outfit will play a string of dates in Australia, then head over to Europe for another chunk of dates. But before that, they’ll be touring with their best friends, Swans, who released The Seer to ear-splitting acclaim. Just playing, Swans aren’t Xiu Xiu’s best friends. Swans have no friends, only allies, only people who exist in the same black fire. Xiu Xiu have a few friends.

Dan Deacon will make your phone part of his show… is spraying the whole audience with candy far behind??

I’ve never actually attended a Dan Deacon show, but just the other day a friend was telling me how rad they are, and that Deacon especially likes starting dance contests in the crowd. According to P4K, Deacon has released an app for his current tour in support of new album America (TMT Review) on Domino, an app possibly geared toward those of us who dig weird and interactive shows but aren’t too keen on dancing in front of strangers.

Developed and programmed by Deacon with help from Keith Lea, Patrick McGinn, Alan Resnick, and Robert O’Brien, the app turns your phone into a light show, a musical instrument, and a strobe. Check out the trailer, and snag the app via the iTunes App Store or Google Play.

P.S. The app doesn’t require wifi or data. RAD.

Maria Minerva, Not Not Fun space disco songstress, gears up for first-ever US tour in support of new album

Estonia-born, London-livin’ grad student and purveyor of spaced-out Tomorrowland (as in Disney’s 1960s take on the 21st-century future) disco Maria Minerva is back with another LP for the always scintillating Not Not Fun label. And this time, she’s washing up on North American shores for her first-ever US tour! Will Happiness Find Me? is the name of the lady’s new 11-track LP, and in the land where the pursuit of life, liberty, and American flag pins reigns supreme, let’s hope the answer to that question is in the affirmative.

The latest from Tallinn native Ms. Minerva (or Maria Juur, as she’s known to her parents, professors, pals, and the non-internet world) drops September 4, and then it’s off to New York for a month-long journey through the New World, complete with stops at the VFW in Missoula, Seattle’s Decibel Festival, and a place in Columbus, OH called Ace of Cups, which is just a straight-out amazing name. She’ll be sharing stages with Julianna Barwick, Helado Negro, Moon Duo, and other similarly inspired retro futurists before heading back to Europe. Check out “Fire,” a track from the new album featuring rapper Chase Royal:

Captured Tracks births reissue imprint to re-release early Yanni albums… nah J/K, it’s a post-punk reissue label

Last week, new school post-punk label Captured Tracks announced the formation of their old school post-punk imprint, Body Double Ltd. A wet dream of tight black pants-wearers everywhere, the newborn baby label features a logo that is suitably Bauhaus-lookin’, and will be headed by Corey Cunningham of Terry Malts and Matt Kallman from Girls’ touring band. The imprint leans specifically toward 1980s post-punk reissues, so get ready for lots of synth tracks about Margaret Thatcher’s domestic policies. J/K! 1980s post-punk isn’t THAT easy to pigeonhole — there could be songs about Reagan, too.

Body Double Ltd.’s first two releases will include Hollywood drum machine enthusiasts Blissed Out Fatalists’ self-titled album and super cheery Bay Area rockers Half Church’s In Turmoil EP (which will come out with five additional bonus tracks). Both releases drop November 13 via CD, LP, and digital download. You can peep teaser tracks from the forthcoming releases at the Body Double website.
