Cody ChesnuTT announces US tour, hangs out with the coolest of stiltwalkers in new video

Move over cat videos and toddlers with an environmental conscience! There’s a new best video on the internet, and it’s the music video for intellectual neo-soul dude Cody ChesnuTT’s new song “I’ve Been Life.” This video has everything you didn’t know you needed in a music video until today: stilt walkers, traditional African dance garb, fire-breathing, and Cody ChesnuTT’s infectious yet political yet upbeat soul harmonies. And it’s only like three minutes long so you can totally watch it like five times in a row while your boss is in a meeting or whatever.

“I’ve Been Life” comes off ChenuTT’s 2012 release Landing on a Hundred, the long-awaited followup to his 2002 debut, the aptly-titled The Headphone Masterpiece. Recorded at Memphis’ Royal Studios, where Al Green, Buddy Guy, and Ike & Tina Turner did some of their most career-defining work, ChesnuTT’s Landing on a Hundred features a 10-piece band and classic, yet progressive, soul stylings. Now he’s striking out on a US tour to promote the album, which starts in Seattle and wraps up in Florida. You can check out the awe-inspiring new video for “I’ve Been Life” featuring the talented tall men of The Brooklyn Jumbies now:

PAN announces release of Helena Hauff and F#X’s first Black Sites EP, just as you predicted

PAN, the wonderfully classy label whose album design is almost worth the price of admission alone, is releasing an EP by Black Sites, a Wonder Twins-style teamup of DJs Helena Hauff and F#X. The more cautious and wise among TMT readers may want some background on these folks before scooping up this slab of vinyl in August. What follows will hopefully provide that insight for the discerning reader.

Helena Hauff is a DJ/producer/what-have-you whose impeccable DJ sets, flavored through with experimental sounds, are getting her noticed by the likes of The Wire and Blackest Ever Black. So, she’s something to keep an eye on.

F#X screws with Google too much to find out what or who it really is. Top results indicate that it may be a Korean girl group, although this can be ruled out almost immediately. But, since it’s all we have to go on, lets just go ahead and say it’s an all-female Korean pop group and that the Black Sites Prototype EP is going to be some kind of bubble gum and EDM mashup that will be popping people’s lids from coast to coast. This is a completely erroneous statement, but don’t let that kill the dream.

Okay, here’s what’s more likely: F#X and Helena Hauff are both resident DJs at “The Golden Pudel” in Hamburg, and this EP is going be an amalgamation of their individual tastes and styles. Go ahead and listen to a cut off the EP below and decide for yourself if it’s the product of a drunken night between bubble-gum pop and EDM or two rising DJs using their combined powers for the good of mankind.

of Montreal announce fall tour without the use of any tour-announcing robots!

Dude, this is too good…. Following all the sensational internet-buzz made by my totally made-up prank-announcement that they would be releasing a new album called lousy with sylvianbriar on Polyvinyl come October 8 of this year, Athens-based weird-rockers of Montreal have apparently decided to totally release a new album called lousy with sylvianbriar on Polyvinyl on October 8! I even made them cobble together a lead single to release really quick!

And now, Kevin Barnes and co. have taken it one step further and announced that they’ll be going on a full-blown fall tour of the US to support the album that I invented. Seriously! They leave October 18 from Athens and will be schlepping away on the road clear through Thanksgiving. All because of me!

What do you say, guys? Am I God, or am I fucking God?

Unsound Krakow adds Dean Blunt, Arca, Julianna Barwick, James Ferraro, and more to lineup; festival now officially cooler than a skateboarding dog

Things that are cool, a list: skateboarding dogs wearing sunglasses with irreverent catchphrases; poufy-haired dudes leaning against brick walls and playing saxophones in 80s music videos; sad rich people ennui in every indie film ever, not just the Sofia Coppola ones. But look out, Cool Things. There’s a new Overlord in town, one Cool Thing to Rule Them All or whatever. And that thing is… Unsound Krakow.

And the coolest festival in the world just got a bit um um a word that is not “cool”… more awesome with the recent announcement of the third wave of artists added to its lineup. Rhys Chatham and Charlemagne Palestine, together in a 15th-century St. Katherine’s Church! Dean Blunt! Arca! Julianna Barwick with a Polish girls’ choir! Mika Vainio! Nate Young from Wolf Eyes! Anna Zaradny! B/B/S/! Altar of Plagues’ last show ever! James Ferraro! Mykki Blanco and Gobby and Anthony Naples and Venus X and Svengalisghost and DJ I-F aka INTERR-FERENCE! Plus people from Hippos in Tanks, UNO NYC, and Underground Resistance presents: Interstellar Fugitives! All these and so many more join the forward-thinking artists of Unsound Krakow this year from October 13-20.

Traxman to release new EP on Interscape Records, but SO DAMN WHATTT !!!!

2012’s Da Mind of Traxman was so thoroughly satisfying that it was somewhat forgivable if you glossed over or even ignored the many tracks and mixes that he — the ghetto house/footwork/juke veteran from West Side Chicago — shared through his various SoundCloud accounts. He even released a couple EPs that went way under the radar. But one of the two that caught our attention was the Heat EP on Sewage Tapes, which saw Traxman fucking with Black Sabbath, Heatwave, and even some bebop, showcasing a relatively bizarre side to an artist who has always taken odd risks with his samples, but didn’t have a chance to share on the platform that his Planet Mu release provided.

His forthcoming EP, titled SO DAMN WHATTT !!!!, has him hooking up this time with Sewage Tapes’ parent label, Interscape Records, and it’s a bit more classic Traxman (minus the juke elements, for the most part) — which is to say that it’s equal parts bonkers and soulful. The majority of the tracks share production with his buds from his Geto DJ’z and TEK families, including DJ L.P., DJ Fred, and DJ Rome, making for a varied yet focused EP. Check out tracks like “C’mon” and “Tha Tekk DJ’z,” and maybe you’ll agree that this is his strongest, boldest release since Da Mind of Traxman.

Listen to SO DAMN WHATTT !!!! in its entirety below and look for the EP on August 6 via all major digital retailers.

Neutral Milk Hotel announce schlong-sized winter tour! (I don’t know how big that is for you, but it’s HUGE for me!)

Greetings underground music fans! Like most of you, I was just re-reading Pitchfork for the sixth time today and saw it reported there that those crazy dudes in the band Neutral Milk Hotel (Wikipedia says that those dudes are Jeff Mangum, Scott Spillane, Julian Koster, and Jeremy Barnes) have decided to massively extend the tour that they started to announce this past spring. And at first I thought, like, “maybe they just never finished announcing it the first time?” But I did a little bit of asking around, and nah, that’s bunk. This month-long jaunt around North America in early 2014 is a totally new and special thing. Maybe you didn’t know this, but they don’t really play out very much. The Jeff dude is like Val Kilmer in that Doors movie or something; doesn’t like crowds, I guess!

Either way though, I’m a huge fan of independent rock, so I am pumped for this. I bet you are too? If so, let’s find each other on Twitter. Can’t wait to sing along to my favorite song(s) live and in person. Especially “The Fool.”
