Man, remember crash cymbals? You know, those loud-ass, obnoxious, expensive-looking mini-gong things that used to be all garishly hangin’ off of drum kits like there was no tomorrow?? And remember how everyone had to have bigger, shinier, louder ones than the guy in the previous band, and he/she had to bang on them even more furiously and ferociously than the last dude in order to indicate that he/she was really “into” the music that his/her bandmates were making on-stage around him/her??? And then you couldn’t even hear the guitars anymore because of all the banging?? Yeesh. Yeah, I remember that too. I think the whole movement was Ringo Starr’s fault…
Naturally, no one uses those horrible pieces of circular shit to make music anymore. Least of all a band like Cymbals Eat Guitars, who have made their hatred of cymbals abundantly clear throughout their previous run of damn-fine albums.
So, IMAGINE MY SHOCK when I heard that the band had a new album coming out via Barsuk on August 26, entitled LOSE, and flipped my shit on over to their SoundCloud page to hear the first track “Jackson”… only to get a huge crash cymbal in the face about 30 seconds into the thing!! OH, THE HORROR!
Wait. What? According to the press info, the album was produced by John Agnello and… deals with frontman Joseph D’Agostino’s coping with… the death of friend/collaborator/keyboardist Benjamin High… and his “longing for a time when music meant everything to you and your friends, and it seemed like one great rock record could change everyone’s life the way it changed yours”? Fuck, sorry, sorry, sorry. I take all of that back. Hit all the cymbals you want, man. I’ll even hit some for you next time I see some!
