My dad’s a great guy. Attentive, kind, an even-hand with discipline — my father had it all. Well, except for that one dark cloud on my childhood. Sometimes, when I really needed him, Dad would be out making a new experimental noise record. Dad, I gotta go to Little League! Tell Merzbow to go home! Yeesh.
Dan Friel, formerly of Parts and Labor, makes noise music with a sweet edge. Where my dad got into the noise game after getting into the fatherhood game, Friel’s going the other way. He’s been making noise for a while, now he’s got a son, and it’s time for him to combine those pursuits. On October 16, Friel will be putting out his new album Life through Thrill Jockey. Thematically, the album revolves around the birth of his son. Listen to first single “Life Pt.1” below.
Daddy’s gotta make that money, though, so Friel will be on the road with Lightning Bolt in Europe this November and December. Before that, he’ll be playing a show at Brooklyn’s Secret Project Robot accompanied by a horn section. Also present for that show will be string quartet ETHEL, who will be performing an original Friel composition.
