Daughn Gibson playing five shows in June, though surprisingly not in truck stops http://www.tinymixtapes.com/sites/default/files/news-12-06-daughn-gibson-new.jpg

Driving down lonely highways in the dead of night. Forgetting yourself in the dark glow of a neon sign as you wait for last call. Wistfully dreaming of better days. These are all activities that one should engage in before checking out crooner Daughn (pronounced “Don”) Gibson and his dubbified brand of old timey country. Or just listen to his fantastic new album on White Denim, All Hell (TMT Review).

Gibson is set to play a small number of shows around the Northeast starting tomorrow, including two gigs in Toronto as part of the NXNE festival, the great white North’s answer to Austin’s SXSW. I’m assuming Gibson will be personally driving a big rig to each of these shows and the lack of destinations is just a reflection of high gas prices. Let’s hope Daughn expands his itinerary if and when the economy gets out of the shitter.

The greatest gift of all: Frank Ocean announces new album, tourdates

It’s like sad Christmas in the middle of summer! “Sad” because dark R&B genius Frank Ocean’s music is tinged with a certain melancholy that makes you either wanna sexy dance in a corner with your eyes closed or go curl up on your bed and cry… and then dust yourself off and sexy dance in that same lonely corner. “Christmas” because this July, Mr. Ocean is bearing enough gifts to make Santa retire to the North Pole Saloon and veer straight into a seasons-long bender out of envy. What kind of gifts, you say? Well, the Odd Future collaborator and smooth solo dude has a new album, Channel Orange, due July 17 via Def Jam. And you can pull that ribbon off some tourdates because Mr. Ocean is definitely coming to town.

That’s right — for a few magical, melancholy weeks this summer, Frank Ocean will be performing at venues across the US and Canada, ending with a very special Lollapalooza appearance. Channel Orange is Frank Ocean’s major label debut; last year’s nostalgia.ULTRA was self-released online and spawned collaborations with the likes of Kanye West, Beyoncé, and Jay-Z. (Fun fact: Frank Ocean worked behind-the-scenes for years writing hits for names like Brandy, John Legend and… JUSTIN BIEBER!!!!!!) Ocean just released the track “Pyramids” on SoundCloud as a teaser for the new album, which you can peep below whether you’ve been naughty or nice. In fact, just be naughty. There’s more to be sexy/sad about after.

Passion Pit add more dates just so that I’ll write a new story about them

Not content with their place in our news archives, the assholes in Passion Pit have literally added more fall dates to their already-pretty-giant tour in support of their new album Gossamer just so that we’d re-up them in our delicious whole grain news feed. Psssssht. Typical buzz-bin SEO mini-neuver from another fuzz-fizzling blogo-band biz-trending synthpop humpers, am I right? I don’t know who these guys think they’re dealing with, or why they’re such super-massive, wantonly obsessive fans of Tiny Mix Tapes, but they’re in for it now… because now I want some wantons. Hang on…

Okay, I’m back. Anyway, also, what exactly goes on inside a passion pit, anyway? It sounds kind of some impulsive group sex thing. Is this really something we should be condoning on our website? It’s like every time we say or type this band’s name, we’re justifying some giant (albeit consensual) gang bang of slop-slippy group-grope of hot-lipped, hard-nipp’ed, ecstasy-vibing, monogamy-threatening, animalistic mysteri-sex. And I don’t know if I like the sound of all those words when they’re said together in comedic succession like that. Do you?

Russian Circles announce world tour, proving that circles are the best shape of all time

When I was a child, my favorite shape was, no contest, the circle. But nowadays, my favorite shape? Still the circle. Just can’t be beat. Squares, rectangles, octagons, triangles, don’t need ‘em. All I need is my man, the circle. Rhombus? Get out of here with your rhombus. The beautiful thing about the circle (and, I suppose, all other shapes, too) is that it is the same in every country. Go to China, circle’s the same. Go to Egypt, circle’s the same. Go to France, circle’s the same. Stay in America, circle’s the same, that doesn’t even need saying. Go to Russia, hell yeah, circle’s the same. Hey, speaking of Russia, that reminds me to segue into the fact that there’s a band in this world called Russian Circles. How about that.

Not only is there a band named Russian Circles, particularly a Chicago-based instrumental metal band who recently put out their fourth album Empros on Sargent House, but they are also going on tour. Where are they going on tour? Everywhere! Well, except for the places they’re not going. So they’re not going everywhere. Let’s try this again. Where are they going on tour? A lot of places! Canada! America! New Zealand! Australia! By the end of the tour, they will have… circled the globe. I am returning to this circle theme.

Thee Oh Sees can’t be stopped: new album and extensive tour announced

As if releasing two of TMT’s favorite records of the year in 2011 wasn’t enough, the San Fran psychedelic garage rockers Thee Oh Sees have announced yet another new album and an extensive itinerary of festival and tour dates to keep you chock full of spooky tunes all the way through October. Just in time for Halloween!

This is Thee Oh Sees, so the sound on the forthcoming LP Putrifiers II, out September 11 on In The Red, continues the group’s ever-shifting evolution as a sonic entity. Referenced acts include the notably chiller environs of Scott Walker, The Velvet Underground, The Zombies, and the shrouded-in-mystery Japanese act Les Rallizes Denudes, and the record is said to feature “Eno-esque engineering,” a hint of Krautrock and the occasional viola. Mix it all up and you get Putrifiers II. They tried brewing up a dash of Celine Dion, a smidgen of free jazz, and just a touch of Diamanda Galas and Rogers and Hammerstein showtunes for Putrifiers I, but it exploded and so they moved on to Putrifiers II. Needless to say, scrapping the first effort was probably a wise call.

But before you can get putrified using headphones, you’ll have to hear the new tracks in person when Thee Oh Sees roll through your town to tear up your local bar or music fests stages with their unique brand of riotous music playing. Things kick off at some music festival in Chicago, then carry for the next 3+ months in just about every corner of this here North American continent. As an added bonus, Thee Oh Sees have paired with some pretty awesome openers to sweeten the deal. Make sure and show up on time to see Sic Alps or co-headliner Ty Segall depending on where you live.

Beach House announce Frightened Eyes tour, premiere “Lazuli” video, advocate careful handwashing practices

SARS. Bird flu. Swine flu. Whatever illness it is that causes people to think Ron Paul is a viable presidential candidate. Over the past decade, so many health issues have captured the hearts and minds of Americans who watch too much TV news. We all know the symptoms: panic, obsession, the inability to listen to anything else (whether it be other news sources, reason, or whatever). Well gear up, my fellow Americans, because a new fever is sweeping our nation — nay, the world! Yep, stock up on your vaccines, your Theraflu, and those weird creepy white masks you bought after that post-9/11 anthrax scare. (Remember that? UGH.) Because a new fever has got the entire world sweating: Beach House Fever.

Yep, even those most impervious of beasts — music critics — have caught this one. The Baltimore-based dream popsters released their latest full-length Bloom (TMT Review) via Sub Pop earlier this summer, and they’ve been racking up frequent flier miles (or whatever the tour bus equivalent is) and taking over eardrums ever since. The band just wrapped an outing to Porto, Portugal’s Primavera Festival, and are gearing up for a lengthy US summer tour, with the requisite August jaunt to Europe to hit the end of summer festival season. And then they’re back in the USA for a lil’ something they’re calling the Frightened Eyes tour this fall, before heading back to Europe once more. Is your pulse quickening from looking at all those tourdates? Don’t be afraid, I’ve got your antidote right here, in the form of the brand new video for Beach House’s “Lazuli” directed by Allen Cordell, the fella who also did the band’s “Walk in the Park” video. And if that’s not enough for you, you can cure your pre-tourdate sweats by watching the band get live on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon on July 24. Creepy white mask not required for home viewing.
