Death From Above 1979 offer the most dramatic reunion statement of all-time; awesome

Death From Above 1979 offer the most dramatic reunion statement of all-time; awesome

I can’t tell for sure, but this official statement seems to indicate that Death From Above 1979 are saying “YES” to a reunion.

It’s been 5 years since Death From Above 1979 played a show, 10 years since Jesse played me the first demos & 11 years since we sat in his parents basement and played so loud we knocked the china off the shelves upstairs. 11 seems to be a YES number for me. Though I am usually a pretty rational guy, if I have something on my mind and I see an 11 somewhere, I know I’m on the right path. It’s one of my last remaining superstitions. 2011 has a nice ring to it & if you’re so inclined, it may be the last year ever! So why not say YES? Why not say YES to Coachella? Why not say YES to playing the music we designed to be an undeniable source of power? Why not say YES to stirring up a writhing pit of sweaty humans? YES to riots! YES to heavy music! YES instead of maybe, and YES to make death your adviser and remind yourself always, that this is not a dress rehearsal. This is the big show.

Jesse and I have decided that what we can do together should not be denied.
Together again, as was always the intention, as a collaboration.
The collision of two different worlds.
As this all takes shape, we will reveal it to you.
All of it happening, as it always has, in our own way.
Thank you all for sharing in our excitement!

Is anyone else weeping with me in excitement?

Away from home, he’s a tourist… Gang of Four North American tour starts this weekend!

Simon Reynolds calls them a “stark and severe” combo who dazzled with “taut, geometrical paroxysms.” I call them “the sandwich era’s stucco Panini” who “dawdled in doodles and pushed the wowee zowee envelope into the seventh stratosphere… exclamation Marx!!” Passionate cultural savants and directionless lunatics alike will agree it is great to have Leeds’ legendary politico-spouters Gang of Four back. The band, featuring founders Jon King and Andy Gill, will embark on a North American tour starting tonight in Toronto before heading to slates of dates in Australia and Europe.

All of this live commotion is mostly due to the Gang of Four’s recently-released, first album in 16 years, Content (TMT Review). Reviews have been mostly favorable and the record profitable, with the “Deluxe Can” version of the album (containing the album on CD, a history of the world image montage, a book of smells, a book of emotions, a book of lyrics, and a vial of Gang of Four blood) gaining the band an unlikely set of rabid Vampire Diaries fans.

Hypnagogist Kenny G takes break from new job, goes on tour

Celebrated for creating breakthrough chillwave records such as G Force and Dutones, the godfather of hypnagogic pop has taken a new job. “I don’t take no bribes,” Kenny G says about his new role as the Head of Riot Suppression at Luxury Prison. The Original G of woozy, zone-altering bedroom pop is now lending his smooth sax sounds to the cause of justice, plunging unruly inmates into coma-like sleep. Despite the new gig, Kenny sends a stern warning to those who might think a new nickname is in order. “Anybody who calls me Kenny Z, I’ll fuck ‘em up,” he says.

For those not currently incarcerated at Luxury Prison, you can catch the G on his upcoming tour.

Nodzzzz add one more z, not really, but their new album is about baseball, also not really

Word around the Bay Area is that raucous trio Nodzzz have signed to the all-too-well-known Woodsist label for Innings, their sophomore LP and follow-up to 2008’s self-titled effort on What’s Your Rupture. It seems that Nodzzz haven’t lost touch with their inner bro on this one, as the album title is an obvious baseball-themed shout-out to the early days when the band formed in Olympia, WA (apparently Anthony Atlas and Sean Paul Presley met while playing the aforementioned sport). No exact date on when this one will be heading “outta the park,” but I would expect possibly a release within the next couple of months.

Nodzzz will be settin out to cruise the West Coast at the end of this month and have a UK tour planned in mid-March with sister group The Mantles. You should probably go see them.

West Coast dates:

02.24.11 - Portland, OR - East End
02.25.11 - Seattle, WA - Sunset Tavern ^

Thurston Moore gets his tribute on in honor of Jack Rose

Wikipedia lists several Jack Roses. One is a cocktail. One was an “American gambler and underworld figure in NYC.” One was the “British colonial administrator of Cayman Islands.” (Truly, it is a name full of wonderful connotations.) However, the Jack Rose we are concerned with today was an experimental guitar dude and member of noise/drone outfit Pelt. Sadly, Rose died in December 2009, but Thurston Moore is keeping his memory alive by giving him the tribute album treatment.

12 String Meditations for Jack Rose, due this month, will be part of the Vin du Select Qualitite series of limited-edition, acoustic guitar-only vinyl records curated by Swingset Magazine and Plastic Records’ Steven Lowenthal. The album will join the elite ranks of releases by Emeralds’ Mark McGuire and Codeine/Come/New Year dude Chris Brokaw.
