Deerhoof announce new album The Magic

Consider Deerhoof’s recent collaboration with Chicago’s Ensemble Dal Niente, plus guitarist John Dieterich’s extra-Deerhoof collaborations that have been ongoing, and we might be surprised to learn that the Bay Area band did not, in fact, persuade David Blaine to stop time for the purposes of finishing a brand new studio album. Your guess is a good as mine when it comes to how they were able to maneuver that in between all of their other jamming, but we do know that three of the songs appearing on the upcoming album The Magic were actually written and recorded for the HBO series Vinyl, which premiered back in February. Deerhoof’s songs ultimately weren’t used, but Executive Producer Martin Scorsese still listens to “Spy on You” on repeat when re-watching Shutter Island (or so I’m guessing).

As far as The Magic itself goes, it’s out June 24 on Polyvinyl. Drummer/Composer Greg Saunier describes it as an “album about what happens when you leave your comfort zone,” which also recalls “what we liked when we were kids — when music was magic — before you knew the industry and before there were rules.”

That also sounds like a description of Deerhoof’s M.O. generally, though who knows what kind of supreme craziness occurred in the abandoned New Mexican office where The Magic was recorded.

Here are two tracks off the album that might offer a hint:
