Descendents recently announced a July 29 release for their new album, Hypercaffium Spazzinate, their first in over a decade. The band had recorded 10 albums over 25 years, each amping up their stripped-down electric energy. Their last release was Cool to Be You in 2004, which was followed by a hiatus until 2010, when they reunited for a series of live shows.
Hypercaffium Spazzinate took nearly three years to create, as the geographically dispersed band members sent tracks back and forth across the country. Its title combines two of Descendents’ trademark preoccupations. Lead singer Milo Aukerman is known for his bespectacled caricature and bluntly adolescent worldview, his lyrics capturing the special angst of the awkward, picked-on teenager. The band is also famously fueled by caffeine, the chemical formula for which is shown on a beaker on the album cover.
Personal catharsis is one theme of the new album. “I think one of the things that’s kept us inspired over the years is having the music as an outlet for our frustrations,” Aukerman said. “Having the freedom to completely blow my voice out every time I recorded was a very positive experience for me.”
