Dirty Projectors to sidestep original cause and release Mount Wittenberg Orca on vinyl

In June of last year, Dirty Projectors and Björk released a web-only download of their collaborative EP Mount Wittenberg Orca (TMT Review), which is now receiving a limited pressing on vinyl and CD through Domino Records in late October. Now Björk fans can have something new to look forward to after they tire of exploring constellations on their Biophilia apps.

The EP was originally conceived by Dirty Projector Dave Longstreth, who was exploring his obsession with scattered vocal harmony arrangements, as experienced on Bitte Orca (TMT Review). After a lightning round in the studio with Björk (three days), the recording was released in June of 2010 as a download to benefit the National Geographic Society and raised over $40,000 to promote sustainable ocean programs.

But if you hate the ocean and enjoy your music pressed on one of the world’s most dangerous and toxic plastics — vinyl — then don’t worry, because they’ve considered your needs too. While the previously mentioned download site is still up and running, with proceeds continuing to be forwarded to NGS, the EP will be available for the first time in physical format on October 24 through Domino.

The limited, hand-numbered deluxe LPs of Mount Wittenberg Orca feature 180-gram vinyl pressed at 45RPM with a sleeve comprised of a 12”x12” three-dimensional lenticular cover. Inside is a 12-page full-color booklet with stills from the original YouTube films of the Mount Wittenberg environs by director Matthew Lessner (Stillness Is the Move). You can preorder the album here.
