Australian instrumental rockers Dirty Three are coming to North America for their first US tour in ages. And like Christina Aguilera says, they’re gonna get rowdy. They’re gonna get a little unruly. They’re gonna get fired up… in a hurry. And well, “dirty” is already in their name, so that base has definitely been covered. Together, violinist Warren Ellis, drummer Jim White, and guitarist Mick Turner will be shattering hearts AND preconceptions about the nature of the power trio/instrumental rock in general, as they kick off their voyage at Montreal’s Ukrainian Federation before dipping down into the United States.

The band will be repping their most recent album, February’s Toward the Low Sun, the band’s first studio album in seven years, and their first for Drag City. And a busy seven years it’s been! Each of the members have been hard at work on various side projects; Ellis has worked alongside Nick Cave in Grinderman and on various film scores, Turner has been getting his solo project on, and White has collaborated with the lovely and talented Nina Nastasia. All worthy efforts, but in the words of one of America’s greatest (and aforementioned) songstresses, it’s about time that they came to start the party.

Google threatens to sue sites that convert YouTube videos into Mp3s, because somehow, somewhere, people are losing money as a result, maybe

C’mon, Google. It wasn’t terribly long ago that you were fighting the good fight against the proposed (and now, fortunately, defeated) SOPA legislation, which was preposterously broad in its supposed enforcement of copyright laws. Now you’re putting your digital foot down against people who convert the audio from YouTube videos into Mp3s? Isn’t the generally horrendous audio quality of these YouTube videos punishment enough?

According to the initial report by TorrentFreak, Google is threatening legal action against at least two YouTube conversion sites — YouTube-Mp3 and Music-Clips.net — if they don’t cease the functionality that, in Google’s words, “allows users to download content from YouTube.” In a letter to both services, Google cites YouTube’s Terms of Service, which prohibits the “downloading of any video from the site that is not accompanied by a ‘download’ link.” Similarly, they claim a violation of YouTube’s API Terms of Service, which prohibits applications that “separate, isolate, or modify the audio or video components of any YouTube audiovisual content made available through the YouTube API.” API, by the way, stands for “application programming interface,” and YouTube’s version of this allows web developers to utilize certain YouTube features, so long as they comply with the associated Terms of Service.

Are conversion sites like YouTube-Mp3 and Music-Clips.net examples of de facto noncompliance? The owner of the former, “Philip,” alleges that they don’t use the API, but instead access videos by other means. Surely there’s room for cordial negotiation then, right? Wrong. According to “Philip,” Google has now blocked their servers from accessing YouTube, forcing them to “disable all conversion functionality.”

Star Wars analogy: it’s not unreasonable to suggest a Palpatine/pre-Darth Vader Anakin Skywalker relationship unfolding here between the RIAA and Google. In a report issued last December, the music organization made their parental dissatisfaction with Google painfully clear. Read the following in a whiny voice to get the full effect:

Increasingly, music-oriented videos posted on YouTube include links to download the sound recording associated with the video illegally. This is in violation of YouTube’s own policies. In addition, YouTube hosts videos explaining how to “game” the Content ID system and how to rip the audio content to create an MP3 file from a music video…

While professing to agree that copyright infringement is a serious problem that needs to be addressed, Google raises alarmist, self-serving criticism to any legislative proposal to deter or thwart rampant copyright infringement. Google should stop engaging in destructive rhetoric and come to the table with constructive proposals to address this problem.”

Deltron 3030 team with Dogfish Head to release new beer, fans still asking for new album

Deltron 3030’s beat-master Dan “The Automator” Nakamura has been listening to his fans, and those fans he’s been listening to have been asking for a beer.

Mr. Nakamura has teamed with Dogfish Head (who also made this fantastic beer) to create a Deltron 3030 “house party in a box.” Inside that box, you’ll find not only a 10-inch record featuring remixes of Deltron 3030 tracks done by The Automator himself, but also six 750-ml champagne bottles filled with “Positive Contact” beer. Positive Contact beer is a special 9% ABV mixture of cider and beer made with “wood-pressed Fuji apples, roasted farro, a handful of cayenne peppers and a late dose of fresh cilantro.” In addition to the hip-hop and hops, you’ll find the record sleeve inscribed with a bunch of recipes cooked up by chefs like Mario “Bolognese” Batali so that you can feed your party guests more than just frozen pizza or charred hot dogs.

In related news, Deltron 3030 have yet to announce an official release date for Deltron Event II, the group’s 12-year-in-the-making follow-up to their third album. We’ve gotten tweets, Facebook updates, and vague details, but I’ll believe it when I get cover art, a tracklist, and a release date. Until then, hand me one of those beers so I can try and forget that it’s taken 12 years.

Karl Bartos, formerly of Kraftwerk, announces solo album; we await the boings, the booms, and the tschaks

Karl Bartos. He’s the one in Kraftwerk who… um. He’s the German…uh.

My apologies. I’m sure that if I grew up during the 70s I’d be much more capable of distinguishing between the individual members of that pioneering electronic outfit, but as things stand, I seem to be drawing a blank. What will cure my momentary lapse in knowledge of the German music scene? Wait, is that bratwurst I smell? Ahh, delicious bratwurst, a plate of which has suddenly appeared in front of me, as though beamed from an otherworldly gottheit — transform me into a veritable expert on all things Deutschland! Mmmmm.

Erstaunlich! There we are. Though technically not one of its founding members, Karl Bartos joined Kraftwerk at arguably one of the most opportune times, following the release of Autobahn in 1974. He later co-wrote The Man-Machine and Computer World, and stayed with the band until 1990, when he ultimately decided to take his percussive talents elsewhere (but not to South Beach). Bartos began his (now defunct) Elektrik Music project in 1992, and in 2003 he released his first album, Communication, under his own name. As Exclaim! reports, next spring he’ll be releasing his second album under his own name, entitled… I have no idea. That information hasn’t yet been revealed, but what we do know is: 1) Bureau B will be releasing the album. 2) Bartos is reportedly “looking forward to the release with anticipation.” Communication sounded an awful lot like Kraftwerk, so you might as well expect a similar sound on this upcoming album. In fact I order you to expect a similar sound.

Lightning Bolt are going on tour this fall, so it’s time to learn all the lyrics: KRRSSH WAAAAUGHUAHH SMASH

Wee oooh wee clang clang krrrsssssh, Lightning Bolt are going on tour this fall! You see those noise words over there? That’s what Lightning Bolt sound like. They also sound a little bit like krssh krssh krssh smash smash krrsssssh weeeee, but who’s counting? If anything, we’re both missing the point, namely that Lightning Bolt is going on tour this fall. If we’re lucky, they’ll make all those noises and more.

As reported by Consequence of Sound, Lightning Bolt will start in Atlanta on August 24, before wrapping around the outskirts of the United States. They’ll hit our precious coastlines and the Southern states in-between, along with a brief stop out in Chicago territory. The whole thing ceases in Boston with a blistering cry of WEEEEE KRRRSSSSH BANG.

Frank Zappa’s back catalog to be completely reissued as a means to make easy endless money

Frank Zappa released over 60 studio albums over the course of a career that spanned four decades. Frank Zappa also has some of the most dedicated, obsessive fans in all of popular music. These same fans inevitably already own EVERY one of those studio albums as well as A LOT of Zappa’s many, many live albums and bootlegs. These same fans, MOST LIKELY, own multiple copies of some of these albums: LP, cassette, CD, remastered CD. Finally, these same fans would DEFINITELY buy these albums again, regardless of added extras, additional remastering, or bonus booklet-based content, only because of their obsessive completist nature.

Consequently, Universal Records, who needs spending cash to use for the company trip to Disney World this summer, has entered into an agreement with the Zappa Family Trust to reissue ALL of Frank Zappa’s albums that were originally released through Zappa’s Barking Pumpkin Records. By the end of the month, record store shelves will be brimming with shiny, new, remastered versions of Zappa’s first 12 records, listed below:
