Discogs continues the development of gear-centered Gearogs site, launches marketplace

Not sure of the “exact” timeline here, but since at least the time of J.S. Bach, Discogs has been hard-at-work building a comprehensive music catalog and marketplace…But come on now; are we going to act like it’s difficult to establish an online database that contains info on 10 million music releases, without neglecting format or reissues? Psssht!

The fact that Discogs is crowdsourced undoubtedly alleviates much of the burden that might otherwise befall Discogs’ CEO Kevin Lewandowski — but developments are currently underway that’ll undoubtedly add some new weight to the cross made out of acetate discs that he’s chosen to lug around the Rose City desert where Discogs is based.

The new idea goes like this: chances are the regular Discogs user has touched (and maybe been attracted to) a piece of audio equipment at some point in their life…so why not create a sibling site specifically geared toward the cataloging and selling of that equipment? (It’s so simple! Why didn’t I think of this?)

The general site Gearogs has been up-and-running for a few weeks now under the stated mission of “cataloging all audio equipment” (excluding in-car entertainment, home cinema, guitar amps, and radio equipment). That’s a lofty goal even with the deliberate omissions that I just mentioned — but further bolstering the music focus of the site is the Gearogs marketplace, which just recently launched on an official level.

Apropos of ALL MARKETPLACES EVER, the Gearogs marketplace will allow for independent listing, buying, haggling, selling, and exaggerating-about-the-condition-of all audio/music equipment! Hopefully this becomes an amazing alternative to the traditional Ebay or unreliable message board route. Or the very least, hopefully it makes it a little easier for Wayne Campbell to find his next dad-rock guitar.
