The Doors documentary to surface in April, high school kids who really "get it" swoon in anticipation

Ah, just what we need… another classic rock doc. I guess this is what happens when Cocksucker Blues grows another layer of dust on it or something… or people get tired of digging up Rapidshare links to it.

In any case, the first feature-length Doors documentary is on the horizon, offering an insider’s look at the short years between The Doors’ formation and Jim Morrison’s demise. The documentary, titled When You’re Strange and written and directed by Tom DiCillo, will see its theatrical release on April 9 and has already screened at Sundance, Berlin, Deauville, and San Sebastian film festivals. But wait! There’s more! When You’re Strange has an accompanying soundtrack to be released on March 30, and will include 13 songs from the Doors’ six albums, in addition to vintage recordings from The Ed Sullivan Show.

Well, I’d better go and find my best Morrison t-shirt. I think I left it somewhere in my sophomore year of high school’s dresser drawer… hmmm.

Harvey Milk announce new album; no, Sean Penn did not contribute

When I think of Harvey Milk, my thoughts first turn to Sean Penn’s role as the first openly gay politician, not the sludge-metal band from Athens, Georgia. Unfortunately, Sean Penn did not contribute to their new album, A Small Turn of Human Kindness, due out May 18 on Hydra Head.

Frightened Rabbit ready new LP, spring tour, Coachella and SXSW dates; we’re tired just thinking about it

After the considerable success of The Midnight Organ Fight (TMT Review), Scottish jangle poppers Frightened Rabbit are at it again with: a) an upcoming album due out March 9 on FatCat; b) an appearance at this year’s Coachella festival; and c) a spring tour, with SXSW dates included. So pack your bags, grab your southern-fried rotisserie (or bathing suit if you’re Coachella-bound) and get ready for some seriously well-arranged and heartfelt angst. The Winter of Mixed Drinks is Frightened Rabbit’s third full-length LP, and is sure to be the centerpiece of their Coachella performance, not to mention the lengthy tour to follow. And if I know Frightened Rabbit’s career progression, I’m sure we can expect impressive things from the boys – on the album, but even more so live.

Nurses tour North America; the doctor will be with you shortly

Nurses have come a ways since their debut album, 2007’s Hangin’ Nothin’ But Our Hands Down. Over the past three years, best friends Aaron Chapman and John Bowers have made the move from the Midwest to Portland, signed to Dead Oceans, recruited percussionist James Mitchell, and released their successful sophomore album, Apple’s Acre (TMT Review), last fall. Just a couple weeks ago, Nurses cemented their status as a band to look out for with a Daytrotter session, consisting of two songs from Apple’s Acre and an unreleased track.

This April, the trio will begin a tour of North America with labelmates The Tallest Man on Earth. They’ve also snagged a spot in the lineup for the End of the Road Festival (Dorset, UK) in September, but we’ll get there when we get there.

Paul Weller gets all Good Morning America on ya ass with new album Wake Up the Nation

Paul Weller is getting himself ready to wake up the nation. No, not through the taste sensation that is International Delight blend instant coffee. Not through chipper morning TV show banter. And most definitely not through the launch of his own Salt Lake City Morning Zoo radio hour (although that would be great). Aw, I can’t fool you guys! It’s the name of his new album. Wake Up the Nation is Weller’s 10th album, out May 4 on Yep Roc.

This latest effort is being called “mean” and “uncompromising,” and features awesome guest appearances from the likes of former The Jam bassist Bruce Foxton, My Bloody Valentine’s Kevin Shields, Bev Bevan of The Move, and legendary session drummer Clem Cattini. So, theoretically speaking, if Weller got all these good people to sign up, my dreams of a Weller-centric Morning Zoo could actually come true.

Wake Up the Nation tracklisting:

01. Moonshine
02. Wake Up the Nation
03. No Tears to Cry
04. Fast Car/Slow Traffic
05. Andromeda
06. In Amsterdam
07. She Speaks
08. Find the Torch, Burn the Plans
09. Aim High
10. Trees
11. Grasp and Still Connect
12. Whatever Next
13. 7 & 3 Is the Striker’s Name
14. Up the Dosage
15. Pieces of a Dream
16. Two Fat Ladies

US tourdates are on the way, but in the meantime, I guess you could try sneaking into one of these sold-out shows in London.

Grass Widow sign to Kill Rock Stars for August full-length debut

San Fran “up and comers” Grass Widow have made quite the name for themselves in the past year. With only two critically acclaimed 12-inches, a CD-R, and a split cassette with Rank/Xerox, the band have built up some mad hype, and it appears to be warranted, because news is out that prestigious Portland label Kill Rock Stars has taken a concerted interest in the well-being of this fem-powered three-piece. KRS will be releasing the band’s debut full-length on August 24, currently being recorded by Mississippi Records (!) body and brains Alex Yusimov. I think we should all be at least a little excited about this.

Also to be excited about: tourdates!!

03.11.10 - San Francisco, CA - The Depot (SFSU)
03.18.10 - Austin, TX - Baby Blue Studio
03.19.10 - Austin, TX - The Mohawk
03.20.10 - Austin, TX - Spiderland
05.27.10 - Austin, TX - Red Seven (Chaos in Tejas)
