Do you like Beach House? How about their Baltimore brethren Dustin Wong? Now, hold on tight to your seat, because if you answered an emphatic YES to both of those questions (and we know you did), we are about to make your day. Wong’s label (Thrill Jockey!) has confirmed that the former Ponytail guitarist, whose 2012 record, Dreams Say, View, Create, Shadow Leads (TMT Review), gets a lot of play around TMTHQ, will be opening for everyone’s favorite Dream Pop duet toward the end of summer. He’ll keep audiences bouncing along nicely to his arpeggiated guitar constructions before Ms. Legrand woos everyone into a stony haze with her dark and distant voice and Alex Scally’s reverb-drenched backing.

If you don’t care for Beach House but still want to see Dustin Wong live, we have some alternative options for you. Leave before Beach House starts their set, or if you live in NY or LA, Wong will be playing a few shows with The Mountain Goats this weekend, then will be in NY for a sold out show with Dirty Projectors the following weekend. It’ll be a Wong-filled summer if ever there was one!

Ottawa’s Bluesfest starts tomorrow; kids today and their newfangled blues 78s!

I normally book two weeks off for Ottawa’s Bluesfest, a summer festival held at Lebreton Flats in Canada’s capital city; there’s just too many acts to take in without a break. This year is no different, with 200+ groups across five outdoor stages, and a few other indoor locations at various spots across the city. The big names on the lineup once again have very little to do with the Blues, with acts like Tiesto, LMFAO, Alice Cooper, Iron Maiden, Nickelback, Snoop Dogg, Bad Religion, Diplo, and K’naan taking the stage.

Rounding out the side stages are a wildly diverse group of artists (and the focus of our coverage), which loosely fall under the “Electro” theme that the festival organizers have adopted this year. Awolnation, Fishbone, Akron/Family, Dirty Projectors, Plants and Animals, !!!, Sleigh Bells, Nobody Beats the Drum, Mustard Pimp, MSTRKRFT, Chromeo, I Mother Earth, Lauryn Hill, A$AP Rocky, Deltron 3030, Chali 2na, Big Boi, Grimes, Rich Aucoin, Blitzen Trapper, The Sheepdogs, The Hold Steady, Hey Rosetta, Young the Giant, A-Trak, Drop the Lime, Skrillex, Beirut, Felix Cartal, Mastodon, 10cc, The Souljazz Orchestra, The Weeknd, and Wolfgang Gartner.

That’s not even near the end of the artist list. There’s a whole raft of local and touring aritsts that I’m not familiar with. There’s artist workshops at local schools. There’s even live comedy at one of the indoor stages. So if you’re a summer festival rookie, just looking to take in your favourite acts and nothing else, this festival has you covered. If you’re into electro, it’s a good spot to be present, with a range of artists creating interesting music instead of chasing a top 40 hit. And if you’re into a little bit of everything and you’ve got some time to spare in the next two weeks and are geographically capable of making it to Ottawa, Canada, I highly suggest you take in our Blues festival.

Skrillex to score Harmony Korine’s next film Spring Breakers :D :D :D

Harmony Korine wrapped production on the follow-up to his perfect 2010 film Trash Humpers eight weeks ago in St. Petersburg, Florida, and while the news that the main cast would be Selena Gomez, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Benson, Heather Morris, James Franco, and Gucci Mane made a lot of us at TMT excited (especially the ones who’ve been posting graphic Disney fan fiction to our private message board), it wasn’t something we were really going to report on. However, once we heard that Skrillex (Prince’s successor) would be providing an original score to the film — titled Spring Breakers and set for international release in 2013 — we had to let everyone know. FAST.

True, we couldn’t come to enough of a critical consensus about Skeevy Sprites and Mailer Daemons to secure it a spot on our year-end list, but to calm the more vocal supporters we added a peel-down Skrillex ad on our front page for a while, which ended up getting nothing but positive feedback. Helping pimp/flesh out Spring Breakers’ score is Cliff Martinez (of Drive fame) and Randall Poster (of supervising-Wes-Anderson fame), who have helped integrate Skrillex’s “swordfish beatz” into the film, which tells the story of four wild college girls who are trying to get wilder on Spring Break and get super-wild when they run into James Franco playing a white rapper named “Alien.” Spring Breakers is currently being edited in Los Angeles, and no I don’t have a joke about a “drop.”

Woods name their new album Bend Beyond, ‘cause you’re gonna bend it to these hot new Woods tracks. Also, it’s coming out in September.

“Bounce to the Woods beat/ Bounce to the Woods beat/ Bounce to the Woods beat/ Bounce to the Woods beat/ Bounce to the Woods beat/ Get it girl.” (x47)

The above, as you can well see, are the lyrics to the first single from the new Woods record, Bend Beyond. Well. I haven’t actually heard the song. I’m just guessing, but I’m sure that I am right. If there’s one thing we know from Woods’ past records, the likes of which include last year’s Sun and Shade (TMT Review) and 2010’s At Echo Lake (TMT Review), it’s that they make everybody wanna move their butts. On September 18, Bend Beyond will come out through the band’s own Woodsist label and everyone will start moving their butts again. All year, the butts have remained still. Before that, some butts will move to the album’s first single via a limited 7-inch on sale during their West Coast tour with Peaking Lights.

Though known for their high energy bounce sound, Woods is doing something a little different for Bend Beyond. Previous Woods albums were marked by the band’s process of an immediacy-focused recording style, the sort in which the band would record songs minutes after writing. This time around, the band chose a more drawn-out approach as a way to capture the group’s live dynamic. So, the band got together in Woods leader’s Jeremy Earl’s home to party for a million days and also lay down tracks for the new record. How will the songs fare? Let your butt be the guide.

DEAD AGAIN: The Jesus Lizard are defunct once more

RIP (again) The Jesus Lizard. Singer David Yow, guitar player Duane Denison, bassist David Wm. Sims, and drummer Mac McNeilly have tucked in the legendary noise rock band and said good night. The aggro (former) Austinites reunited in 2008-2009 after breaking up in 1999. The band toured the US and made major festival stops, including All Tomorrow’s Parties in both England and New York. Denison told Rolling Stone that the band has parted amicably. So don’t worry, little Jimmy. The Jesus Lizard still loves you. This wasn’t your fault.

Denison said, “That reunion tour went so well – we kept it brief, and we didn’t extend it – that it just seemed natural to some of us to just go, ‘Well, let’s do an album. We all can still play, we get along, let’s do it,’” but that “certain members” just weren’t feeling it. “Certain members” felt they all lived too far away from each other and thought a post-reunion LP was cliché. Denison explained that he also wanted to play some new tracks whilst the band toured what Rolling Stone deemed the “indie-rock nostalgia circuit” (unintentional OUCH, guys) but that other members wanted to just stick with the classics.

The Jesus Lizard released a DVD of the band’s first reunion performance called Club. A fancy schmancy coffee table book called… Book, complete with “writings,” photos, and possibly a live DVD, is out August 7.

Swans announce tons of North American and European tourdates, and we’re counting down the days until The Seer comes out on August 28

Nothing quite like a summer afternoon at TMT. When we’re not dashing off stories on our charmingly decoupaged typewriters, we’re eating popsicles and flying kites and hanging out in our one-of-a-kind, castle-shaped inflatable pool. Sometimes, we even make sangria and drink it out of mason jars.

Today, though, things got a little crazy. An owl crashed through the window with a scroll tied to one of its legs, and once we wrangled it off and unrolled it, we had to crack a code that consisted of star drawings and emoticons. Once we figured it out, the whole office went bonkers, because the note not only reminded us that Swans’ The Seer will be coming out on August 28 via Young Gods, but it also listed the parade of guests who helped out with the album (including Al and Mimi of Low, Karen O, Jarboe, and Akron/Family), plus a new batch of tourdates. We’ll be piling into a school bus and hitting the road for a staff field trip to catch a show or two, because here at TMT, we really dig Swans. Like, really dig Swans.

And, we found a nice little postscript scrawled at the bottom of the owl note. Michael Gira’s two cents:

“Despite what you might have heard or presumed, my quest is to spread light and joy through the world. My friends in Swans are all stellar men. Without them I’m a kitten, an infant. Our goal is the same: ecstasy!”
