Early 70s Michael Yonkers LP Goodby Sunball to be reissued in limited quantities, go out of print again, and be reissued again in another 36 years

Michael Yonkers, the current king of “sought-after LPs that are way out of print, so we’ll find a friendly indie label to reissue it, and a whole new generation of hipsters can enjoy my music that I recorded decades ago,” has another LP scheduled for a long-overdue reissue, coming not long after De Stijl’s recent Michael and The Mumbles repress. This time around, the label is Secret Seven Records and the album is entitled Goodby Sunball.

Originally released in 1974 and recorded at Yonkers’ home studio, the album is more of the classic folk/psych that Yonkers’ name has become synonymous with. Chronologically, the album came a few years after Microminiature Love and just before Lovely Gold. The reissue has been remastered from the original LP and will be limited to 500 copies. The limited quantities will, of course, necessitate this album quickly going out of print, again, where it will once more sit in the collections of aging hipsters and hoarding music nerds until it is once again reissued, still with limited quantities, in 2046.

In fact! I actually have a quote from a future Tiny Mix Tapes article that I will write: “This new reissue of Goodby Sunball is truly a step above the original reissue, with the music finally being released to BrainMP3 and straight to every user’s consciousness. The new remaster, straight from the memory banks of the original owners, sounds superb when played on 8DSound data-stream players. I just wish they didn’t release it in such limited quantities. Again.”

Goodby Sunball is available for purchase on July 7.

Woven Bones scour the West Coast (for babes)

Strap on your mud boots and get ready to wallow through the murk-lined garage pop that has come to embody Austin’s Woven Bones, cuz the bastard trio is currently rippin’ through the US, and if you thought they weren’t coming to your town, well, think again buddy. Woven Bones have decided to cover the walls with grease and slime over on the West Coast as well, thus extending their tour till the end of August and creating a pretty deep rift down the west side of America. For those of you with yer heads between your legs, the band is touring in support of their newly released full-length In and Out and Back Again (TMT Review). Boredoms to Release 77 Boadrum DVD in the Good Ol’ USA on September 7

Now I ain’t much for no fancy arithmancin’ or kabbalahizin’ or any such numerowhatnot, but from what I remember from Catholic school, 7 is just about the perfectest damn number you’re gonna find in this here crazy cosmos of ours. Just ask everyone’s favorite Japanoise japesters Boredoms! On July 7, 2007 at 7:07 PM, Boredoms agitator Eye gathered 77 drummers in Brooklyn’s Empire-Fulton Ferry State Park to create the perfect drum circle, a feat which previously lived only in the dreams of countless college hacky sack club presidents.

For those of us who missed out on this moment of percussive singularity, be prepared to live the magic on September 7 when the official 77 Boadrum DVD drops on American soil from Thrill Jockey. Along with footage of the performance itself culled from a number of videographers, the DVD also features behind the scenes rehearsal footage and interviews with the participants. The thing even comes with an exclusive set of photo postcards not available in the Japanese edition! Take that, Nipponophile jerks who probably way overpaid for your postcardless import DVDs!

Björk sings on Antony and the Johnsons’ new album, Swanlights

In May, we told you about Antony and the Johnsons’ fourth full-length album, Swanlights (TMT News). Not much was known about the album at the time, except that it was being released on October 12 via Secretly Canadian (October 11 in the UK via Rough Trade) and that a 144-page book of the same name was expected too. Today, however, we have a little more exciting news. According to her official website, Björk collaborated with Antony and the Johnsons on a Swanlights track called “Flétta.” HOORAY! We all know how well their voices go together, too, as they previously collaborated on two Björk tracks — “Dull Flame Of Desire” and “My Juvenile.” — from her 2007 album, Volta.

In other news, Björk has also recorded a collaboration with Ólöf Arnalds. The track is called “Surrender” and is being released a part of a two-track single for “Innundir Skinni.” Both songs will be released on the full-length, Við og Við, due in November.

And, of course, don’t forget about Björk’s recent collaboration with Dirty Projectors (TMT News)! It was released today, and it’s fucking awesome. You can listen to the final track at the Chocolate Grinder.

Swanlights tracklist:

Swanlights:

01 Everything Is New
02. The Great White Ocean
03. Ghost
04. I’m in Love
05. Violetta
06. Swanlights

RIP: Rammellzee, rap pioneer, graffiti artist, gothic futurist

From Pitchfork:

Yesterday, Fab 5 Freddy revealed on his Twitter that art-rap pioneer Rammellzee had died. Today, Stuart Argabright, Rammellzee’s collaborator in Death Comet Crew, confirms that sad news. He was 50 years old.

A legendary graffitti artist, fashion designer, and rapper, Rammellzee remains best known for “Beat Bop”, his 1983 single with K-Rob, which was produced by famed artist Jean-Michel Basquiat. But his long, varied career encompassed much, much more than that.

Jagjaguwar transitions into cave-only label, signs The Cave Singers to prove it

Home recording projects have been a big deal for the past few years, but they’re a done deal now, kid. The new thing? Cave recording! Lo-fi bedroom recordings start looking pretty fancy (and, you know, really corporate) in comparison to those recorded in a dark and dusty and bat-ridden cave. Yes, sir, the new crop of buzz bands are all going to be teenage cavemen rocking with skin and bones. The biggest, baddest label in this new cave order? Jagjaguwar and their newly-signed flagship artists The Cave Singers.

For their first act with new brothers-in-arms at Jagjaguwar (after two albums on Matador, including last year’s Welcome Joy [TMT Review]), The Cave Singers are working on a new record with Randall Dunn, famed producer behind works by sunn 0))), Boris, and new labelmates Black Mountain. No idea how seasoned Dunn is at working inside a cave (though the press release does mention a studio… surely a typo), but the group hopes he’ll help give their sound “some added weight and a soaring ferocity more akin to [their] incredible live show.” The sessions between the band and Dunn should lead to a record due early next year.

The Cave Singers will venture from their shadowy dwelling next month for a couple of festival appearances. Then in September, they’ll venture all the way to China for their first time, though they have yet to announce dates for that specific jaunt.

Cave Singers tourdates:

08.06.10 - Happy Valley, OR - Pickathon Festival
08.07.10 - Happy Valley, OR - Pickathon Festival
08.08.10 - Happy Valley, OR - Pickathon Festival
08.21.10 - Redmond, WA - Marymoor Park (No Depression Festival)
