Elisa Ambrogio (of Magik Markers) surrenders to the solo album impulse; The Immoralist out in October on Drag City

“Every dark night has its Dostoevsky,” Elisa Ambrogio once said, so who better to breathe some heavy meaning into the perpetual bleakness of 2014 than the puke-poet herself? Yes ma’am, after 50+ releases with main outfit Magik Markers and a couple with main squeeze Ben Chasny, Ambrogio is paring it down even further with a solo album called The Immoralist, out on October 21 through Drag City. I’m going to guess that the title at least partially refers to André Gide’s 1902 novel; the Markers have always had a major literary bent to complement all the mouth-breathing, and the book’s little wiki-description even sounds like a solid assessment of the band: “[w]hat some see as a story of dereliction, others see as a tale of introspection and self-discovery.”

Since the question of acoustic Ambrogio has already been answered with 200 Years, there’s really no reason to expect an MTV Unplugged 2.0 from The Immoralist. In fact, the press release is making it sound like a fully lipgloss’d pop record, with steady drums, “cheerleader chants,” and layered vocal harmonies in the style of… uh… you know, Wilson Phillips. But with an edge. Like, instead of having Brian Wilson as her dad, she’s got Waka Flocka Flame. And her mom is Peter Laughner. Anyway, fuck a reference point. Elisa Ambrogio, singer/songwriter, has 10 fully realized songs and they’re getting stuffed into your ears in October whether you like it or not. Until then, browse the backlog.
