Ensemble Economique dramatizes summer temperatures, announces solemn new LP Melt into Nothing

Macroeconomically (on a global scale), we’re doomed! Despite months of uninterrupted stateside job growth, it won’t be long until even the developed world finds itself in the midst of unequivocal and unrelenting anarchy — where makeshift tribunals are convened for the sake of determining the right to consume mere morsels of food, and where fiery barrels light up the night sky in lieu of electricity! Actually, in its own way, that sounds pretty exciting, and who better to bolster your enthusiasm for future Mad Max emulation than Ensemble Economique a.k.a. Brian Pyle, who’s been trading in the tones of dystopian hopelessness for a few years now (supplementing his slightly more uplifting work in the folkish outfit Starving Weirdos).

Melt into Nothing: a dissertation in chemistry, and also Ensemble Economique’s next LP, set for release on June 27. I’ve fortunately had the chance to listen to it already, and the initial echoes had me wondering just where the “shoegaze” labels all were. But no! As you move forward, an appreciation for the just “too much despondence” takes hold. Slowdive? Bah, more like Quick-fanciful-leap. A pretty seamless use of tape manipulation, field recordings, synth organ, and airy guitar/vocals lead to something quite beautiful, in my opinion. Time to relish your solitude:

02. Make-Out in the GDR
03. Hey Baby
04. Fade for Miles

06. Melt Into Me
