The Flaming Lips take short intermission from 300-hour song to plot Record Store Day release

While The Flaming Lips are gearing up for their 24-hour song, dropping on the trippiest day of the year (Halloween, obvi), they’re already plotting some special Record Store Day releases, workhorses that they are.

In an effort to prove they’re not too cool to support those who have never attempted creating massively long songs from spaceships while floating around in confetti-filled plastic bubbles, the band’s compilation will feature the likes of Neon Indian, Lightning Bolt, and Prefuse 73. Lead Lips planner and plotter Wayne Coyne told Billboard that upcoming collaborations are planned with the likes of Death Cab for Cutie, Ghostland Observatory, Cloudland Canyon, and Nick Cave, whom they’ve already recorded three tracks with. Those will likely be released in October 2012. Oh… and um, apparently they’re also eyeing Ke$ha (no joke) and Lykke Li to contribute as well. Because every good spaced-out man needs a couple cosmic cuties, amirite?

In between no-gravity bong hits, Coyne stated, “I am bound to the agreements we have with the other artists because we’re doing all of this as limited editions.” The first round of compiled collabos will hit record shops on April 21, 2012. By that time you should have devoted ample amounts of your non-sleeping lifestyle to listening to their most epicly epic song, and should be ready for songs to once again come in bite-sized pieces.
