Foals go on tour this spring, hold up giant trophy for some reason

Foals go on tour this spring, hold up giant trophy for some reason http://www.tinymixtapes.com/sites/default/files/news-11-01-foals.jpg

It’s been a long-fought battle, but English post-punk outfit Foals did it! Earlier in the day, they hoisted an oversized trophy over their collective heads, all while streamers and confetti fell in celebration of something. “This award, whatever it is, may be for us, but it’s really for you,” said frontman Yannis Philippakis. “We couldn’t have done it without you.” Phillapakis then rose a fist toward the sky as he shouted “Believe in yourself… forever!” and a jaunty song by tunesmith Kenny Loggins played over the proceedings, despite no prominent sound system in sight anywhere.

As exciting as all this is, it’s only slightly less exciting than news that Foals will be touring North America in the spring and playing some of the tunes from last year’s Total Life Forever (TMT Review). Along for the ride will be Freelance Whales and The Naked and Famous. In fact, those two groups will open all dates, with the exception of the 4/20 date in Dallas, which will be Freelance Whales-less (presumably because they will be getting high with the Mavs Man), and the 5/11 date in Mexico City, in which the support situation is unconfirmed.

New LP from Okkervil River out in May: I Am Very Far not so far away

Everybody talked about reunions last fall, from Pavement to Swans to Archers of Loaf’s surprise appearance in North Carolina earlier this month. But aren’t we forgetting something? While we speculate about which early-90s indie supergroups should get back together, aren’t we neglecting the little guys of today — or at least, 2007 and 2008? With the exception of their work as Roky Erickson’s backing band on 2010’s True Love Casts Out All Evil (TMT Review), Okkervil River haven’t released anything since The Stand Ins (TMT Review) over two years ago. I’ll bet you didn’t even realize how much you missed ‘em, did you, you Shearwater traitor?

After all this time, Okkervil River are back with a forthcoming full-length, I Am Very Far, from Jagjaguwar on May 10. Like many works that come a decade into a career, this one is more complex than ever before: there are strings, horns, and choral arrangements, for one. Lush orchestration is nothing groundbreaking these days (ahem — Sufjan, Andrew Bird, an entire trend of “maximalism”), so frontman Will Sheff boldly asserts that some tracks consist of “file cabinets thrown across the room, a solo created out of a fast-forwarding and rewinding boombox, and much more.” Kooky equals good, hopefully, but we’ll have to wait until May to know the full gamut of rock whimsy. Check out Okkervil River on Jimmy Fallon, where they played “Wake and Be Fine” (a new song which, disappointingly, isn’t quite so weird as flying file cabinets and dozens of musicians would suggest — even with The Roots joining in).

Sic Alps don’t let the Asylum keep them from touring

Sic Alps are some wacked dudes. At least in theory. This is the impression they left with their first string of releases a few years back. Since then its been a cyclical ride for the San Fran duo — a few pop gems will sneak out, then in fierce opposition they’ll last out with somethin’ real dirty. What Napa Asylum (out the other day on Drag City) does is bring this dichotomy together in a downright elegant manner. Enough of my two cents though, let this be your informer. Basically it’s two guys trying to make some real shit, and they’ll prove it by heading out on a tour of the states at the end of February in support of their just-released killer full-length.

Ducktails wants you to help fund his new 12-Inch. And once he releases it, you can pay for it again like a sucker!

Ducktails’ Matthew Mondanile is confusing the heck out of me right now. Let me see if I’ve got this down. First he releases his new record, Ducktails III: Arcade Dynamics (tmt review) on Woodsist that features a song called “Killin’ the Vibe” amongst its tracks. Then he teases us with his talk of vinyl and iTunes-only releases for his alternate version of “Killin’ the Vibe” that features vocals from Panda Bear. And now he’s asking us to fund the release of the “Killin’ the Vibe” 12-inch with a Kickstarter page so that he can release the vinyl on his own label. Man, that’s a lot of vibe-killing going on.

Looks like the plan is to still have the vinyl single feature four tunes: TWO alternate versions of “Killin’ the Vibe” (the Panda one and a live version featuring the British band Spectrals) and live versions of the songs “Sit Around with Ya” and “Couch Surfer.” According to Prefix, Mondanile is promising all the typical zany-ish prizes like ‘zines, handwritten notes, and “an exclusive Ducktails show” for people with briefcases full of unmarked cash to burn. But he also promises a “cassette tape of unreleased songs” to folks who kick-in a more reasonable $8 amount. Unfortunately for Mondanile, however, this begs the question: is any music that doesn’t feature Panda Bear really worth paying money for?

RIP: Gladys Horton of The Marvelettes

From Detroit Free Press:

Gladys Horton, the Detroit native whose voice led such Marvelettes hits as “Please Mr. Postman” and “Beechwood 4-5789,” died late Wednesday at a nursing home in Sherman Oaks, Calif. She was 66.

“My mother died peacefully,” Horton’s son, Vaughn Thornton, said in a statement issued this morning by the Motown Alumni Association. “She fought as long as she could.”

Horton had lived in the nursing facility since a stroke last year.

She had retired from the music business in spring 2009, noting that travel was no longer enjoyable, effectively ending the 48-year reign of the original Marvelettes.

“Love comes in two directions, from your hearts to us and from our hearts to you, and it has always been that way!” she wrote in a statement at the time.

The Pains of Being Pure at Heart take Twin Shadow under their wing on spring tour

The Pains of Being Pure at Heart are total pros at making it out of the blog buzz world alive, and they even have a new album — Belong, due out in late March on Slumberland — to show for it. Since Twin Shadow are still struggling with their newfound acclaim (and the fact that every band in 2011 is named Twin Something), Pains nicely decided to show them the ropes by taking them out on tour this spring. Aw, what sweethearts!
