Frank Ocean steps out of the warm womb of Odd Future for first solo dates

Frank Ocean steps out of the warm womb of Odd Future for first solo dates http://www.tinymixtapes.com/sites/default/files/news-11-10-frank-ocean.jpg

Rap collective Odd Future inspire a lot of vigorous debate, but everyone can agree on one thing: Frank Ocean is probably the group’s suavest member. Unless there’s something about that Taco guy that I don’t know, Frank Ocean’s smooth, self-loathing R&B stands out a bit from the rest of those Odd Future kids. Yet, he clearly feels pretty comfortable with them, as he hasn’t stepped out of their sticky, angry womb for any solo shows. Consider him stepping out now: Frank Ocean has a trio of solo dates scheduled for November.

New Orleans! New York! Los Angeles! If you hate those cities, you will not end up seeing Frank Ocean by himself. At least, that’s how it seems for now. Ocean plans on announcing further dates in the future, but that information does not exist yet. Only Frank Ocean and those that can occupy Frank Ocean’s brain know that information. Please stop occupying his brain, though, as that is very rude.

Odd Future will also be going on a lot more than three dates over the next couple of months. Mr. Ocean may or may not show up at these dates, but he has not confirmed anything. That said, there are particular dates Ocean will definitely not be at, unless he can, say, be in New York and Austin at the same time. If he can, he should not, because that is also very rude.

Frank Ocean dates:

11.05.11 - New Orleans, LA - House of Blues
11.06.11 - New York, NY - Bowery Ballroom
11.15.11 - Los Angeles, CA - El Rey Theater

RIP: David Gamper of Pauline Oliveros' Deep Listening Band and See Hear Now

From Taiga:

David Gamper, 66, died unexpectedly Wednesday, September 28, 2011 at his home in Landgrove VT. Gamper was a member of the highly influential Deep Listening Band along with Stuart Dempster & Pauline Oliveros. At the time of his death, discussions were underway for Important and Taiga Records to release new DLB material for the 80th birthday of Oliveros on May 30, 2012. Plans will proceed to release what has sadly become Gamper’s last recordings from Seattle WA, January 2011. We lost a great artist but his spirit lives on in sound & we can always find him there. To David’s family & friends, our sincere condolences.

KWJAZ goes on tour, reissues an LP on Not Not Fun, remains a mystery

Even though lo-fi space jazz, post-dream pop, and deconstructed chillwave are not legitimate genres, they seem to capture the vibe of KWJAZ, the mysterious project of San Francisco’s Peter Berends. Earlier this year, he released a limited-edition, self-titled cassette via Brunch Groupe, and it contained two side-long tracks — “Once in Babylon” and “Frighteous Wane.” The edition of 121 sold out quickly, but the tracks are now available on vinyl through Not Not Fun Records. Also, KWJAZ has just set off on a European mini-tour, and if you happen to end up at one of the shows, can you tell me if it’s something like a Sun Ra/Jandek collaboration? Because that’s the image I currently have in my mind.

Dates:

10.06.11 - Madrid, Spain - Space Cadet
10.08.11 - Barcelona, Spain - Miscelanea #
10.09.11 - Glasgow, UK - The 13th Note &
10.10.11 - Cambridge, UK - The Portland Arms %
10.12.11 - Copenhagen, Denmark - Kunsthal Charlottenborg $
10.13.11 - Stockholm, Sweden - Debaser Slussen

# Espanya
& Nackt Insecten and Sad City
% Grief Athletes and Brideburger
$ Claudio Rochetti and Kam Hassah

Bob Dylan: songwriter, poet… Nobel Prize winner?

It might be him (babe). Due to a number of last-minute bets in the past 24 hours, Bob Dylan’s chances for winning this year’s Nobel Prize for Literature have dramatically improved from 100/1 to 5/1, ranking him first in the race.

Ladbrokes, the British based gambling company, said in a statement that, “Everything now points to Dylan taking the prize. At first we had him down as a rank outsider but the committee have been known to spring a shock and punters the world over feel Dylan will be the beneficiary.” Trailing Dylan in the odds are Swedish poet Tomas Transtromer at 10/1, Japanese novelist Haruki Murakami at 8/1, and the previous favorite, Syrian poet Adonis, at 6/1.

Dylan’s song lyrics span from the 1960s to the present, and in addition to musical compositions, he has published works of literature that include the autobiography Chronicles Volume One and the 1966 collection of poems, Tarantula.

A win for Dylan, who has been nominated for the award six times already, would further cement his place as a pop culture icon and give academic credence to his importance as a “writer who prophesie[s] with [his] pen.”

The winner will be announced at the ceremony tomorrow at Harvard University.

RIP: Steve Jobs

From The New York Times:

Steven P. Jobs, the visionary co-founder and former chief executive of Apple, has died at 56.

Apple said in a press release that it was “deeply saddened” to announced that Mr. Jobs had passed away on Wednesday.

“Steve’s brilliance, passion and energy were the source of countless innovations that enrich and improve all of our lives,” the company said. “The world is immeasurably better because of Steve.”

Mr. Jobs stepped down from the chief executive role in late August, saying he could no longer fulfill his duties, and became chairman. He underwent surgery for pancreatic cancer in 2004, and received a liver transplant in 2009.

Black Star debuting new Madlib-produced material on Colbert Report tonight, cancelling shows after swinging and missing with Live Nation

Remember back when we so gleefully announced that Black Star was touring following their Rock the Bells appearances? Well, turns out things aren’t going so swimmingly for Kweli and Mos when it comes to their tour promoters Live Nation. So let me tell you a little story about how it all went down, like Uncle Mos would do….

Following their two-night stint in Chicago, Talib Kweli tweeted, “Due to irreconcilable differences with Live Nation Black Star will not be performing in Atlanta tonight. Stay tuned for updates…” And when the updates came, well, he went back on his word, re-confirming the ATL show, only to go back again to say, “Apparently ticketmaster has already refunded 90% of tix so the show looks like it ain’t happening. Im still fighting, headed to atl.”

On September 30, Kweli updated fans explaining, “Regarding Black Star cancellations, I am just as frustrated as I can imagine many are. If it was my decision it would not go down like this.” After a bit more back and forth, the entire Black Star tour has been canceled, save for an October 8 show at the Restoration Rocks event in Brooklyn.

So the good news in all of this? Well, at least Kweli was kind enough to tell us that on October 5 (tonight!) Black Star will debut new material in collaboration with Madlib on The Colbert Report.
