Fujiya & Miyagi to go on US tour, as was written in the scrolls

Fujiya & Miyagi to go on US tour, as was written in the scrolls http://www.tinymixtapes.com/sites/default/files/12-01-fujiya.jpg

Late in 2006, a man took pen to scroll and scrawled out, “Fujiya & Miyagi are a band and in about five or six years, they’ll go on tour in the United States.” Remember, this was before the internet was the internet, so everybody was still writing on scrolls. When they weren’t writing on scrolls, they were drawing pictures of tigers. Prove me wrong. Anyway, the guy also wrote some stuff about how Fujiya & Miyagi weren’t actually from Japan and some passing references to Krautrock and stuff like that. But who cares? Dude wrote it on a scroll, and I don’t read anything written on scrolls.

Still, that part about them going on tour in the US still rings pretty true. As predicted, Fujiya & Miyagi are coming to America (like Eddie Murphy!!!!!) in January. They’ll be here for about a couple of weeks, then they’ll get homesick for the grey skies of their native England as soon as February hits. Some say there’s no better time to be in England! Plan a trip now!

Fujiya & Miyagi released a record called Ventrilloquizzing last January. More recently, they put out a single by the title of Ecstatic Dancer, which you can hear by clicking on that very link. That, too, was written on the scroll. Really, this was all in the midst of an intense scroll-writing session, the likes of which has been compared to a fever dream and/or nightmare and/or boring afternoon.

RIP: Richard Lainhart, electronic composer

From Richard’s Facebook page:

Dear friends of Richard. This is Richard’s wife Caroline Meyers. I have very sad news to report to you all. Richard died yesterday December 30 from complications from surgery on December 22. He struggled valiantly to overcome his infection, but it was not to be. We are all in shock and cannot grasp the idea of his not making music, talking music, teaching, posting and playing.

Richard’s closest friends and I are planning a memorial service and I will let you know the date and time. I would be most grateful if you have a story about your connection to Richard if you could share it here and we can bring all your thoughts to the memorial when it happens.

I never thought I would write such a Facebook post as this and I beg your prayers for Richard Lainhart, musician and irreplaceable human being.

(Thanks to The Out Door for the tip.)

RIP: Sam Rivers, jazz musician and composer

From Ottawa Citizen:

Members of New York’s jazz community including composer Darcy James Argue and trumpeters David Weiss and Marcus Printup are passing along word that the great saxophonist/composer/bandleader Sam Rivers died yesterday.

Rivers, who was 88 and lived near Orlando, Florida, made music with great stylistic breadth, informed by a wealth of inspirations. He was a striking figure in the story of free jazz, but he was also thoroughly steeped in the rigours of bebop. Rivers was a member of the Miles Davis Quintet in the 1960s before Wayne Shorter joined the group, and he appears on the 1964 album Miles in Tokyo. Rivers subsequently appeared on some bracing Blue Note recordings including the classic under his own leadership Fuchsia Swing Song, Tony Williams’ Spring and Life Time, Larry Young’s Into Somethin‘ and Bobby Hutcherson’s Dialogue.
